My parents have done nothing for me all they do is suck up to American government, suck up to this overrated nation that holds me back, I want to live life to the fullest and live for every moment

Japans lost decade seems to have turned into two while borrowing nearly twice as much as the US per GDP - 200% vs. the US 130% combined federal and state debts. (I believe those are the #s) They also got a credit downgrade along the way.
Canada cut spending by about 22% in the mid 90s and we paid down debt by up to ten billion a year prior to the economic problems. Unemployment was 12% before the cuts and dropped since then to 7 or 8% today. In the early 90s the Economist called us an honourary third world economy, nowadays we seem to be in the best shape out of developed countries.

Answer: I can't think of an upgrade, nothing beats manga except maybe books (as in novels).
As for downgrade, there are two. One downgrade is furries, 'nuff said. The other is American cartoons. I love my country, but our animation is just wtf.
1)If there really is an upgrade to anime, are you going to upgrade to it? I kind of have a bit =O since I read novels and manga. *prepares for thumbs down*

I say that because 1.0 was the old school anime I remember from my childhood like Sailor moon, then there are current ones like Vampire Knight which are 2.0.

Censorship in translated manga and anime.
It can be fixed by us stopping :3 (obvious answer is obvious).
I really get annoyed with censorship, so what if it's not appropriate for the kiddies? Most of the time the things aren't even that bad (like in pokemon how it was censored when James was going to have boobs. I mean all the *female* characters have boobs, so it's nothing new. Not like they showed them..)

Why should we care what a bunch of idiots at S&P think about anything?
They were wrog about Enron (they gave it an A days before it went down). They were wrong about the Mortgage-backed securities (and played a key role in the collapse in 2008).
They downgraded Japan in the nineties, and it is still there, save for Tsunamis. And markets reacted to their downgrade by fleing from stocks into... US treasury bonds.
So, why should we care about these dimwits and what they say?
Answer: They have way too much power & way too little credibility.

We just passed 1 times GDP this month.
Japan has 2.25 times GDP, a tsunami, a nuclear meltdown, their businesses are all suffering huge losses because our dollar is weak and is hurting their exports yet they are triple A
Singapore 1.25 time GDP and staggering losses in their export businesses.
So why down grade the USA? They want a new President? It really is the TEA party downgrade? It sure is not debt.

Answer: This is known as the ‘Lost Decade’ in Japan: When the real estate and stock market bubble burst in 1990 in Japan, it is estimated that 16 trillion US$ worth of wealth was destroyed in Japan, or equivalent to three times the size of the Japanese economy at that time. As a result of the crash and falling consumer demand, Japanese companies focused on repaying their debt rather than investing into new projects. This caused the demand to fall further triggering a vicious cycle of falling demand, falling cash flows, falling asset prices and deteriorating balance sheets. To avoid a complete collapse of the Japanese economy, the government increased government spending, investing in infrastructure projects such as roads, airports, freeways and bridges. This decade long government spending increased government debt to close to 200% of GDP, the biggest among advanced economies. However, the government spending was not enough initially and was regularly countered with opposite policy measures, such as when President Ryutaro Hashimoto raised the sales tax after the economy grew by 2.6% in 1997. This tax increase killed the emerging economic recovery in Japan. The government measures were, and still are, half hearted and insufficient: whenever the economy shows signs of recovery as a result of fiscal stimulus, the government seems to counter such recovery immediately with attempts to reduce government debt and government deficit.
Japan today has many problems: ageing and shrinking population, it is stuck in a liquidity trap where monetary policy no longer works, it still suffers from years of deflation, a politically corrupt system and civil service, unsustainable government debt and deficit, to name just a few. The solution is twofold: (1) create inflation and increase inflation expectations to stop the economic downward spiral with another massive government stimulus as long as the Japanese government can still borrow at close to zero interest rates; (2) implement structural reform to overhaul and reduce the power of the civil service and regulatory and tax reform to provide incentives for consumers to spend and for companies to invest.
If Japan does not have the political will or if not some external shock pushes the Japanese economy out of the doldrums, there is very little hope for Japan to recover.

I know Canada was downgraded from AAA to AA in 1993 and Japan in 1998. Has a country ever been able to restore its AAA rating?
Answer: You already named the country. Canada was downgraded in 1993 and had it restored in the early 2000s when it started running record surpluses. It holds a AAA today and is likely to hold it due to deficit slashing due to increased taxes, spending cuts, and a strong banking and housing sector.

Could the Downgrade hurt your stocks on Monday? I have some research?
Now I did a little research. Japan also had a downgrade to AA- in April of 2002. Of course wouldnt that scare people out of the stock market in the next opening? Well heres what happened.

Just as long if people who own stock dont freak out, I think everyone will be fine Monday.

Answer: In my opinion, one of the greatest lies propagated by and on Wall Street is the impact of fundamentals on stock prices. Sometimes stocks move in response to the news and it seems "obvious" but when the opposite happens, it was a "sell the news" situation. Pick the news--whether it be Osama bin Laden being captured/killed, earnings, job report, FOMC meeting--whether the market goes up/down in response is a total crapshoot. If you were to look at enough cases to see if the market moved in the expected direction, you would fall far short of statistical significance.
Forget reasons and stick with your trading plan.
This is the main reason technical analysts often shirk the fundamentals. Perhaps fundamentals are something to watch over the long, long term--but if you're swing trading or position trading or even watching the market from day to day like you seem to be, it's nearly impossible to see how fundamentals reliably shape the markets.

Has the disasters in Japan affected Yahoos 39% stake In Alibaba?
Just trying to figure out why Yahoos stock fell so hard today and couldnt seem to rebound. I know the disaster that happened to Japan is terrible and I am not downgrading this with my question, I am only trying to figure out what is going on with Yahoo and why there stock was on a steady drop all day Wednesday. Can any of the investors on here give me an explanation on this? Thank you
Answer: Alibaba is not Yahoo's only Asian venture. The drop is due to Yahoo Japan, which represents a decent chunk of Yahoo's valuation.

Why do people think a downgrade in our debt rating will lead to higher borrowing rates for the government?
when it has been proven time and again that a simple downgrade does little to affect interest rates;
Look at when Japan was downgraded, their rates barely moved. Same with China, Australia and Canada.
Why when it has not affected large economies in the past do people think it will make our treasury rates shoot up? Remember treasury rates are based more on how safe you look compared to other investments than any rating, and we still look safe compared to anywhere else.
@Spock: It does not apply in this case, basically investment in uncertain times flows to the perceived safe bet. There is nothing out there in any better shape than us.

Answer: Consumer Interest rates are inversely related to credit score. Do the economic rules not apply to the government?
