Are there any flaws with this guys pro-Chinese logic? He seems to have all the backing for his claims.?
Are there any flaws with this guys logic? Are we really living in a western-skewed time period. But in reality, history has been dominated by the East?
Quote:
"""China was the most advanced civilization up until the 1750s (arguably the early 1800s at the time of the MacArthur Embassy). It lead the world in economics, technology, etc and had reached level of technological and economic sophistication by the Song Dynasty (1300s) that only Europe would surpass in the 1800s (see thefreemanonline below for source). The ability of China to industrialize and explore the world like the Europeans existed far before 1500s. What kept this from happening was the self-designed conservatism of monarchs.
Here is one of Zhenghes hundred treasure ships that existed in 1420s (way before Columbus)
http://patrickhcc.wikispaces.com/file/view/1421-ChinaZhengHeShip1405vsSantaMaria500pxw.jpg/37065865/1421-ChinaZhengHeShip1405vsSantaMaria500pxw.jpg
China also experienced the honest start of an industrial revolution in the 1300s Song Dynasty before the court destroyed all traces of the new revolution:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciwsrTVfw4E
http://www.thefreemanonline.org/columns/chinas-forgotten-industrial-revolution/ (READ THIS LINK ESPECIALLY)
But sadly, the ships were all burned and industry all destroyed due to a mentality to destroy all things not traditionally "Chinese". In fact, the Yuan (Mongol) Dynasty shows what East Asia could become had it not released the strains of conservatism.
In the end, because no such restraints were on Britain, the Industrial Revolution happened there, propelling Western civilization to the top by the 1850s. It quickly spread to Japan in 1860s but China, still believing in its "superior" conservative ways, chose not to industrialize. From here on, China endured its "Century of Humiliation", having been top of the world only decades before. This lasted until the end of the Second World War.
However, East Asia had always had the ability to industrialize fast, when forced out of conservatism. Japan in the 1860s serves as a prime example of this ability, having industrialized only 20 years after the West.
Another example of East Asias true, but hidden potential lies in the fact that EVERY SINGLE East Asian capitalist countries (Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong) has kept at par or surpassed western counterparts.
And since the 1950s, China has also begun to rocket in growth and is now basically regaining its age long position as the the worlds superpower. Though it had reached its low in 1900s, it quickly rebounded and was never actually considered a third world country, but rather a second world country like Russia. Chinas lag can be attributed to Communism, not inability. Now the ties with communism has been loosened, Chinas economy is again showing its potential, set to surpass the West by 2030.
I might also add that, of ALL the races in the world, only Caucasians and East Asians were in the First and Second World. And ALL of the Caucasians and ALL of the East Asians were. The entire rest of the world was in the third world.
http://www.easypedia.gr/el/images/shared/3/32/World_map_worlds_first_second_third.GIF
So, it really is only a comparison between East Asians and the West. It is because we currently live in the "250 year western dominated world" that we see the West as superior. But when you look at it in a bigger perspective, this 250 year is only a small part of the big picture. East Asia, was superior in technology before. It chose to stop that might from manifesting into an industrial revolution or colonization. But now, it is forced out of its conservative ways. Because it had the ability, infrastructure, it easily adapts to this change. Japan in the 1860s. ALL East Asian capitalist countries. And the new semi-capitalist China emerging from the 1980s.
All in all, East Asia was at the top of the world 250 years ago. The western dominance thing has lasted its good 250 years, but soon, this will shift back to China. Also, the East was only hindered from its potential due to conservatism and later communism. Everything for industrialization and colonization had existed long before the 1500s. But despite all this, it never became "third world". It hung on, prevented colonization. Now, it is reemerging as a Dragon once again. In the future, we will look back on these 250 years of Western domination as only a short but crucial (Ill admit) part of history.
Napoleon: "There is the sleeping dragon (China), do not wake her (from her isolationism/conservatism) for she will shake the world"
And some other guy once said that if China had wanted to conquer the world, it could have. Thank-god it she doesnt.
Note: All these are backed by the links I have given in my article. Or based on commonly known information (example; Japans in
dustrial revolution in the 1860s, the success of the Asian capitalist countries, the countries constituting the 1st, 2nd, 3rd worlds, and Chinas rapid rise after the fall of its true communist system)"""""
How CAN it be interpreted differently though? It seems like hes not making any inferences.
He didnt mention the argument that Rome could have possibly been better than Han China, but he seems to have proved that Song China reached a level of superiority "only surpassed by Europe in the 1800s". And Im pretty sure that Rome was not better than 1800s Britain, etc.
@Jon J
Yeah that is true. But it seems to me he knew that China DIDNT end up industrializing, etc first. But his point was that it is still superior as it had the ability for a long time. (not like the third-world countries that lacked it). It was not inferior, it just was conservative. But now it is finally using it.
@Scissor my timbers
Well the whole point of the arguement was that what caused such stagnation wasnt inability but lack of interest to use the technology to industrialize and conquer. China was isolationist after all. And I believe hes not only talking about China, hes talking about East asia vs West.
@Jon J
I dont think he was talking about Chinas future here. Many things can go wrong with any country. We cant know. But from current trends, BRIC estimates, China is surpassing the west by 2027.
The arguement was more based on the past. Trying to point out that in this western world, we sometimes lose sight that before 1800s, the world wasnt dominated by the west but by the east. And that the West didnt catch up and surpass because of superiority but rather it had 700 years to make up the lost ground because of CHinas descision not to modernize and remain "Chinese".
@Jon J
Chinas case is different than Japans btw. For Japan to surpass the US, it needs every citizen to earn TWICE as much. In the 1980s, they were making 40k for every 25k, so they were getting closed. Then it collapsed and now we are about even. How it should be.
For China, they only need to earn 1/4 as much as an American to beat us. BRIC estimate that this will take by 2027. But by 2050, they will be the same rich. Meaning that if Americas overall GDP were say 20 Trillion, China would be 80 Trillion. Now China might fall short of this but it will inevitably come close. And then, China would be the Past and the Future, surrounding these 250 years.
And yes, you do give good points but I guess his basic message about East Asias superior ability and its recent choice to use it (Japan as early as 20 years after the west) wasnt really refuted.
Answer: Like Glenn Beck, his facts are right but his interpretation is very off.
He implies that because China could have done something they would have been successful at it, that is a faulty unknowable inference.
He ignores the fact that China's centralized government retarded innovation by decree in a way that hurt their actual effectiveness as a nation.
He ignore the perils of China's flawed mercantilist system that is very similar to what Japan's was before for the "Lost Decade" of economic stagnation.
He completely ignores the governments lack of ability to police corruption in a such a massive country without a free press. The will lead to widespread corruption and millions if not billions of wasted dollars in the future.
He also ignores that China's massive population cannot be sustained on exports only, a consumer culture and service sector must be made through government redistribution of wealth from the rich. China won't do this either.
He ignore all the problems and only points to a past history of unused technological superiority and massive agriculture creation ignoring the perils of entering an information age society.
MOSTLY--- He ignores that the central government that made China so successful also stopped it from harnessing that success, and modern society isn't about government directed economics, but rather individual entrepreneurship and freedom of thought that creates the FUTURE of everything.

China Visa through HK?
I am holding Indonesia passport working in Singapore and I need to be in Shanghai on Tuesday night. China Embassy in Singapore just change the rule that we need 3 days to get the visa. I wonder if I can buy a transit ticket to through HK and I apply my visa in HK. Will this be a problem? I arrive HK Monday night with transit ticket to Shanghai Tuesday night, I am planning to apply for China Visa in HK and they said it only needs one day. Did anyone can advise on this? Will they let me fly in to HK with transit ticket to China without China Visa?
Thank you.
Hi Alex,
Thanks for the answer. But this is not what I am looking for. Of coz I know I need visa to China. Please see my question.
Answer: They will let you in to HK. They do not check for a Chinese visa until you enter China. However, as far as I know getting a Chinese visa is more likely to take a whole day so it may be better to delay your Shanghai transit by a day, or risk not having the visa in time for your flight.

When come to USA, must departure from the visa issue country/place?
For instance, I got B2 visa from US Embassy in Singapore, then I go to Shanghai, China. Can I come to USA from there? or must I go back to Singapore first?
Answer: Yes, you may enter the US from anywhere, regqarldess of hwere the visa was issued. In fact most people that require visas enter from country other than those where they reside or where the visa was issued, as there are no direct flights from e.g. many African countries to the US, so people traveling from these countries must transit via other countries in order to get to the US.

Apply Visa to China in China Embassy of Spore as visitor from Malaysia?
Hi, I am Malaysian. I would like to ask if i am allowed to make my Tourist Visa to China in China Embassy of Singapore as a visitor in Singapore?
Let s say i am travelling to China on 1 July 2008, departing from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, would i be able to apply the Visa under this situation? How long validity of the Visa will be given from the issued date if i can apply in this month June?
Hi. Thanks for nicksnames reply. Ya. I am Malaysian citizen. A new visa rules has been imposed for visa application in Malaysia due to Beijing Olympics. The validity for Visa to China if one were to apply in May is 30 days, and the worst if one were to apply in June is just 9days. If i were to enter to China on 4th July, that means i can only apply for visa on 26,27 June.
To hjas and helo pilot cfi, I just got an information from a local tourist agency in Msia, was being told that nowadays we cant make visa in a foreign country as a visitor. not sure is it true.. sigh..
Answer: I would think that you would be able to but don't hold me to that. But I am 75% sure you don't, since literally every hotel in Hong Kong has a service in which they can obtain a Chinese visa for you. Are you a Malaysian citizen or a foreign citizen living in Malaysia? If you are from Singapore, Brunei or Japan, you don't need a visa for tourist vists of up to 15 days. For Malaysian passport holders, Chinese visas cost 30 ringgit for a 3 month single entry visa, or 60 ringgit for double entry six-month visa.
If you cannot obtain a Chinese visa in Singapore, I suggest that you either take a short trip across the border into Malaysia and apply for one there, or take a detour into Hong Kong and apply for one there. Most hotels or other visa services have a same-day or overnight service, and better yet, you don't need a visa to travel to Hong Kong.

Which visa to the US does my girlfriend need to apply for?
I am a US Citizen living in Singapore, and my girlfriend is a citizen of China (Peoples Republic). We plan to get legally married (on paper) in Singapore sometime next year, and then travel to the US for our wedding ceremony in summer of 2010. We do NOT intend to live in the US after our wedding. We plan to return to Singapore after the wedding and live in Singapore for at least the next several years.
First, I need to know which visa to the US my girlfriend needs to apply for in 2010 for our wedding, after we get legally married in Singapore in 2009. We will be applying at the US Embassy in Singapore.
Second, I need to know if getting legally married in Singapore in 2009 is going to hurt my girlfriends chances to get this visa to the US for our wedding ceremony in 2010.
If the answer to my second question is yes, are there any recommendations for how to proceed to minimize or eliminate the possibility that my girlfriends visa application will be rejected?
Thanks!
Answer: As for the Visa its a B2 (tourist visa), getting married in Singapore, could jeopardize your tourist visa and your legal status to preform a second wedding ceremony in the U.S.
My advise get the tourist visa and marry in the U.S.A.

Answer: By green card, I assume you mean work visa. If so, the answer is yes, but you must have a job first. Your employer will apply for it for you. I don't think it is possible to get a work visa yourself, or to have one unless you already have a job.
