Why did Alexander Calder make mobiles?

I know Alexander Calders parents where artists but what else inspired him to make mobiles.
Answer: As a child, Alexander Calder was more interested in building things in the little workshops that he cobbled up in the corner of his father's studio than drawing or sculpting. In fact, he intended to become a Mechanical Engineer, not an artist, and he studied at the Stevens Institute of technology. But art was in his blood, so it wasn't surprising that when Calder turned to art, his work was a blend of engineering and art. He enjoyed making things out of wire and sheet metal, and he especially enjoyed making contraptions that moved such as articulated toys. He created a small sensation in Paris with his elaborate and humorous performance of a miniature circus made from wire, rubber, cloth, wood, and found objects. Calder had a studio in Paris and became friends with a number of avant-garde artists such as Miro, Arp, and Duchamp. Calder visited the studio of Piet Mondrian, the Dutch painter who became famous for his geometric paintings of grids and bold blocks of primary colors. Calder said that he was "shocked" into creating abstract art after seeing Mondrian's work, and had the idea to somehow add movement to these simple colorful geometric patterns. When the Kinetic Art movement took off in the 1920's, Calder quickly joined in and began to create moving sculptures that relied upon motors to move the elements. Most of these were objects that resembled planets and objects that orbited around each other. Albert Einstein reportedly saw one of Calder's sculptures at an exhibition and said that he found it mesmerizing and could watch the endless permutations of the patterns it created for hours. The problem with these sculptures though, was that the motors and mechanisms were very temperamental, and they required endless adjustment to work properly. They were also rather noisy, heavy, and difficult to transport. Additionally, they also required a power source, so there were limitations on where the object could be displayed. It just wasn't a very elegant solution. Some of Calder's mechanical contraptions had smaller elements that were attached to wires that were balanced off of other parts of the sculpture so that they wiggled and moved around freely as the mechanism turned. I believe that at some point Calder noticed that these pieces moved by themselves just from the movement of air in the room, and had a revelation that he could make the entire sculpture like this, a lightweight series of elements and wires attached to each other and balanced so that they moved randomly and quietly just from the slight currents of air in the room. This was the innovation that made Calder famous. The sculptures were unlike anything that anyone had ever seen. The artist Marcel Duchamp coined the term "mobile" to describe Calder's art. Calder would go on to make thousands of these sculptures, ranging in size from an inch wide to as large as 76 feet across (the mobile in the National Gallery in Washington).

Answer: his most well know piece is the large mobile in the Guggenheim Museum his other very famous one is the large spoon that lays across a stream like a bridge in a park in NYC among many artists of his time the most famous pieces for the wire circus acts that he made and gave shows with to friends while he would make the move and make the sounds of the animals they are very highly prized collectors items now. I personally like the army tank piece who's gun is actually a long lipstick tube. Your local library which all too many people seem to forget exists has several books on Sandy and his work with great pictures so you can pick out your own favorite and not rely on other peoples judgment.

what in alexander Calders life affected him to do his artworks?

hi i need help in my visual arts assingment please links or information would be excellent .
Answer: Hi! There are a number of fine and reliable sites with information about him including the Smithsonian Archives which offers his personal papers and correspondence: Alexander Calder was born in 1898, the second child of artist parents—his father was a sculptor and his mother a painter. Because his father, Alexander Stirling Calder, received public commissions, the family traversed the country throughout Calder's childhood. Calder was encouraged to create, and from the age of eight he always had his own workshop wherever the family lived. Even at age eleven, his facility in handling materials was apparent. Despite his talents, Calder did not originally set out to become an artist. He instead enrolled at the Stevens Institute of Technology after high school and graduated in 1919 with an engineering degree. Calder worked for several years after graduation at various jobs, including as a hydraulics engineer and automotive engineer, timekeeper in a logging camp, and fireman in a ship's boiler room. While serving in the latter occupation, on a ship from New York bound for San Francisco, Calder awoke on the deck to see both a brilliant sunrise and a scintillating full moon; each was visible on opposite horizons. The experience made a lasting impression on Calder: he would refer to it throughout his life. Calder committed to becoming an artist shortly thereafter, and in 1923 he moved to New York and enrolled at the Art Students League. http://www.calder.org/life/page/biography.html "It was early one morning on a calm sea, off Guatemala, when over my couch — a coil of rope — I saw the beginning of a fiery red sunrise on one side and the moon looking like a silver coin on the other."[11] The H.F. Alexander docked in San Francisco and Calder traveled up to Aberdeen, Washington, where his sister lived with her husband, Kenneth Hayes. Calder took a job as a timekeeper at a logging camp. The mountain scenery inspired him to write home to request paints and brushes. Shortly after this, Calder decided to move back to New York to pursue a career as an artist. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Calder Calder was born in a suburb of Philadelphia to a family of artists. His grandfather, Alexander Milne Calder, and father, Alexander Stirling Calder, created sculptures and public monuments, and his mother was a painter. Accustomed to traveling in pursuit of public art commissions, the family moved to Pasadena, California, in 1906. The new environment—with its expansive night sky studded with brilliant planets and stars—fascinated the young Calder. These cosmic forms strongly influenced the structure and iconography of his future work. http://www.hollistaggart.com/artists/biography/alexander_calder/ http://www.aaa.si.edu/collections/alexander-calder-papers-7294/more http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&biw=907&bih=515&q=alexander%20Calder%27&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=iw#hl=en&sugexp=gsqvh&pq=alexander%20calder%27&xhr=t&q=alexander%20Calder&cp=16&pf=p&sclient=psy&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial&biw=907&bih=515&source=hp&aq=0&aqi=&aql=f&oq=alexander+Calder&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=48743d1567ae2695&bs=1 Hope this helps start you off. Why is Alexander Calder considered an important artist? What is so special about him?

Answer: In 1909, when Calder was in the fourth grade, he sculpted a dog and a duck out of sheet brass as Christmas gifts for his parents. The sculptures were three dimensional and the duck was kinetic because it rocked when gently tapped. These sculptures are frequently cited as early examples of Calder’s skill. He began by developing a new method of sculpting: by bending and twisting wire, he essentially "drew" three-dimensional figures in space. He is renowned for the invention of the mobile, whose suspended, abstract elements move and balance in changing harmony. Calder also devoted himself to making outdoor sculpture on a grand scale from bolted sheet steel. Today, these stately titans grace public plazas in cities throughout the world.

alexander Calder’s sculptures are visual toys for adults?

Explain why people regard Calder’s sculpture as visual toys for adults. Do you agree? Why or why not? here is his art work: http://cache2.allpostersimages.com/p/LRG/21/2169/O4XCD00Z/posters/levy-yadid-alexander-calder-s-mobile-statue-and-people-on-konigstrasse-king-street-stuttgart.jpg
Answer: i defo agree with that statement; Calder is a genius man, he creates so much movement in nothing more than some bent metal scraps, he is one of the most strategic colorists as well, his mobiles are so well balanced it is a marvel to look at; these are seen as toys for adults because we are mesmerized by them and it holds our attention as a child is awestruck with their toys; of course if you don't like Calder's works you may disagree, but i love his art
