Do Keto Diets make you stupid?

The whole deal behind keto diets is that you dont eat carbs so your body goes into ketogenesis and starts using your fat stores as energy. Now Ive heard that during the diet it makes you slower... I fully believe this! If your brain is used to working of carbs, then suddenly its energy source changes to fat, things can stay exactly the same. Now the question is are these effects permanent? Im in a bachelor of engineering program and I cant afford to get dumber just to lose some body fat. Thanks :)
Answer: no they don't

Dont you find it ridiculous how people say that eating less causes muscle loss and no fat loss?

Put it this way, its as ridiculous as how if a hiker packs a weeks worth of food in his backpack, and when he has no food, he starts to chop off and cook his own body parts and eats it instead of eating the food he has packed already. Even Dr. Joel Fuhrman says that the body burns its own fat reserve(ketogenesis) during long periods of fasting or starvation as an attempt to preserve muscle tissue.

biochem pheochromocytoma mcq need confirmation of answer please?

A middle-aged man presents to his physician because of anxiety attacks accompanied by profuse sweating and heart palpitations. His physician documents a high blood pressure of 175/110 (hypertension) and orders ultrasound studies that show an adrenal tumor called pheochromocytoma. The man has also noted weight loss and fatigue over the past month when the attacks began. Knowing that pheochromocytoma releases epinephrine from the adrenal medulla, alteration of which of the following metabolic processes best explains symptoms of decreased energy and weight loss? A. Glycolysis B. Lipolysis C. Gluconeogenesis D. Glycogenolysis E. Ketogenesis heres how i thought about this q: man has an excess of epi released from adrenal medulla so fight or flight response is increased. i ruled out ketones being formed from this and lipolysis because i thought epi doesnt have a direct effect on those processes. glycolysis provides energy so i omitted that too. so its between glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis...since the latter is used to make glucose from non glucose sources that would cause breakdown of protein and could contribute to the mans weight loss and decreased energy. any help is appreciated...i think its gluconeogenesis as the right answer but im not 100% sure.
Answer: epinephrine acts on the adipocytes directly to increase the formation of cAMP (same mechanism for glucagon; insulin does just the oppposite) and that increases the intracellular mobiliation of TAG. for the complete set of info please refer to my blog: medicalresourcesforfree.blospot.com PS there's no such thing such as beta 3 ceptor

Ketone body metabolism?

Fatty acids are metabolised into acetyl-Coa by B-oxidation. The acetyl-Coa then enters the citric acid cycle unless there is inadequate glucose, in which case the oxaloacetate enters gluconeogenesis and the fatty acids are oxidised to ketones. These ketones then, apparently, enter the citric acid cycle of other cells. I thought the only reason for ketogenesis was because the citric acid cycle was inactivated...? Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any and all help.
Answer: Ketone bodies are really just a way to distribute acetyl-CoA to areas of the body that cannot carry out beta oxidation by themselves, and therefore cannot otherwise utilize fatty acids (notably the brain). It's a means to keep the TCA cycle going - the reason the cycle is inactivated in the first place is because it is running low on glucose, and and glycolysis is normally what provides the acetyl-CoA. The key point to remember is that the TCA cycle (and the electron transport chain) must be kept going in a cell at all times, because that is the only way that the cell can create enough ATP to live. Second point is that nothing in the TCA is actually consumed, except for acetyl-CoA, from which the 2 carbons are transferred to 2 CO2 molecules - everything else just temporarily carries the carbons from acetyl-CoA around. So, keeping in mind those two points, gluconeogenesis is kind of related, but not in the way you understand it - oxaloacetate does form the substrate for gluconeogenesis, but you can't pull it out of the TCA cycle, or the gluconeogenic cell will die - therefore, new oxaloacetate to be used for gluconeogenesis has to be created from something else (mostly glucogenic amino acids, and to a much smaller extent, the glycerol backbone from fatty acids as well as any odd chain fatty acids that form propionyl-CoA) - I won't try to explain that here. But the point is, you have to look at this oxaloacetate as a separate supply, dedicated to gluconeogenesis, that has to be created by breaking down something else, since you can't take away what is being used in the TCA cycle. So, during fasting, when glucose is limited, you end up having to break down body proteins (mostly from the muscles) in order to create more glucose. Therefore cells that are able to use acetyl-CoA as fuel in the TCA cycle switch to that instead, either by carrying out beta oxidation themselves, or having another cell do the oxidation and export it to them in the form of ketone bodies. This way, the amount of protein that is broken down to create glucose is minimized, and the small amount of glucose is reserved for the cells that absolutely need it.

In Ketogenesis, why does the 3rd acetyl coA attack the 2nd carbonyl rather than the one closest to -S-CoA?

Is simply a matter of how the molecule is being held by the enzyme? If there were no set enzyme, would there be any preference in attack? My intuition is that the carbonyl closest to the CoA would actually be more partially positive (and thus more prone to to attack by the 3rd acetyl CoA). For reference, http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ab/Ketogenesis.png The specific enzyme in question is HMG-CoA Synthase... though my question is more of a "thought" level. Im sorry if perhaps I wasnt clear: My question is why to Acetoactyl-CoA does the 3rd acetyl coA add in the way it does. (There are two carbonyls on the acetoactyl... why is one favored over the other... is it simply a matter of steric hindrance?)
Answer: it is because, the carbonyl group has a double bond, and as acetyl coA is a electronrich moeity, the double bond between the carbon and oxygen breaks, and the carbon bears a positive charge, where the enzyme can bind without any steric hindrance.

What triggers ketogenesis in your metabolism?

What triggers ketogenesis?
Answer: When you work out you build fatty acid in the body and that the sore feeling you get. If the body does not use or waste the fatty acid then ketogenesis happens. Ketone bodies are produced mainly in the mitochondria of liver cells. Its synthesis occurs in response to low glucose levels in the blood, and after exhaustion of cellular carbohydrate stores, such as glycogen. The production of ketone bodies is then initiated to make available energy that is stored as fatty acids.
