Malaysia-Singapore-China relations in the workplace?
Malaysia-Singapore-China relations in the workplace?
In the 1960s there were race riots between the Malays and the Chinese Singaporeans who at one time were part of the Federation of Malaysia until they left in 1965. Would it be advisable to hire a Chinese man from Singapore to operate a manufacturing facility in Malaysia in present day. Serious answers only. Thank you
Answer: Let put it this way, if the Chinese man you are hiring is good at PR, then it won't be a problem at all for him to operate anything in Malaysia. The race riots was almost 50 yrs back, where people are more conservative. For the new breed, we are more toward racial harmony and history is something one learn and make sure it doesn't repeats itself.
Just one note, the Malaysian do have problem with the Singaporean attitude while in Malaysia. I agree there are always black sheep in every country, hopefully the one you are hiring is a "white sheep" ya.

If 40% of Malaysia’s revenue comes from oil?
Will hell break lose when we are out of oil? Imagine 40% of the income is missing, will there be riot, people staving and criminal everywhere due to people do not have things to eat?
Answer: No more oil >> lesser funding
less funding >> lesser development
less development >> business collapse
business collapse >> lesser job
lesser job >> high unemployment
unemployment >> no money
no money >> rakyat depress
depression >> politic unstable, suicide, robbery, riot and other crimes
Its true we can diversify our economy, and govt can collect more tax by then, but the economical gain will not be as enormous as the revenue from oil. Not forgetting that nobody are happy to pay tax.
Some may say how come Singapore can survive without any resources? But we forget Msia is a huge country and requires huge funding.

HINDRAF or Hindu Rights Action Force is a coalition of 30 Hindu Non-Governmental organizations committed to the preservation of Hindu community rights and heritage in secular Malaysia. The group has led agitations against what they see as an "unofficial policy of temple demolition" and concerns about the steady encroachment of sharia-based law.[1][2]
In late 2007, several prominent members of the HINDRAF, all prominent lawyers, were arrested, some on charges of sedition; following an enormous rally organised by HINDRAF in November, the charges were dismissed by the courts.
Arrests in October 2007
On 30th October, four HINDRAF Group leaders and human rights lawyers, namely M.Manoharan, P.Uthayakumar, P. Waytha Moorthy and S.Ganapathi Rao, were arrested and detained for taking part in the Demonstration against the demolishing of a Hindu Shrine in Kuala Lumpur.[3]
Human Rights Forum
A series of peaceful weekend forums were organized throughout Malaysia to increase the awareness of Hindu human rights by HINDRAF. A previous forum held near central Kuala Lumpur had been disrupted, according to HINDRAF with the collusion of the police.[4] Subsequently, HINDRAF appealed directly to the Inspector General of the Malaysian Police in an attempt to ensure that their fora went off peacefully.[5]
Arrests in November
On 23 November, 2007, three HINDRAF leaders, P. Uthayakumar, Waythamoorthy, and V.S. Ganapathi Rao, were arrested and charged under the Sedition Act.[6][7]

On 30th August 2007, a class action on behalf of Malaysian Indians was filed at The Royal Courts of Justice in London to sue the UK Government for US$4 trillion (US$1 million for every Malaysian Indian) for bringing Indians as indentured laborers into Malaya, "exploiting them for 150 years" and thereafter failing to protect the minority Indians rights in the Federal Constitution when independence was granted.[8] As the group, which represents mainly working-class Indo-Malaysians, could not afford the legal fees required, a petition was circulated with 100,000 signatures to be presented to Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom to appoint a Queens counsel to argue the case[8].
HINDRAF organized a rally on Sunday, 25th November 2007 to submit the petition at the British High Commission. Malaysian police refused to grant a permit for the rally, and set up roadblocks in Klang Valley along roads leading up to the rally to screen motorists entering the city center and identify troublemakers. They also advised the public not to participate in the rally, and arrested three leaders of HINDRAF.

On the morning of the rally, an estimated twenty thousand people gathered near the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, carrying life-size portraits of Queen Elizabeth and Mahatma Gandhi, to indicate the nonviolent nature of their protest.[8] Five thousand members riot police dispatched to the scene used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowds. 136 people were arrested.[8][9]
HINDRAF later claimed to have faxed the petition to the British High Commission staff. However, as of 28 November, the British Envoy had not yet received any petition from the HINDRAF, though they did say they had received some unspecified information by fax.[10]
Threat from the government
Malaysian prime minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi warned that the government will invoke the Internal Security Act against the demonstrators if they needed. The prime minister threat further criticised the demonstrators, but promised that he will listen to everyone even if they have unpleasant words to say. [11]

What exactly is muhibbah and does it really work?
I often hear about muhibbah but I dont know exactly what it is. I think its something like different races living together in perfect harmony, side-by-side, no hard feeling, love...
Please correct me if Im wrong. Does that really work in Malaysia? I dont mean just no racist riots since May 13, but do people of different races actually respect each other with no hard feelings or theyre trying to trick one another?
Britney, try to be more general. Try to explain what is muhibbah to a person who doesnt know anything about it (me)...
Well, in case of mixing with people of other races, that happens everywhere, not only in Malaysia. I always deal with people of different ethnics and I consider it normal, nothing to brag about. I call it life.
Can someone elaborate something on muhibbah - what is it in the first place (definition!!!)
Hmmm...
Im a Muslim but Im not a Melayu and I dont want Malaysian citizenship.
Can I become a part of Malaysian society?
No, my post is just a response to whats going on in this section. I dont have any problems with people being Malay or whatever but I do find the labelling attitude which classifies people according to their ethnic background or citizenship problematic. Well in practice, I hang out with Chinese and they dislike Malays, and I hang out with Malays and they dislike the Chinese, and I hang out with Indians and they dislike both of the above...
Now I think muhibbah is just an application of the silat principle sarangkan musuh dengan senyuman.
How come Malays who live abroad can behave without telling me how great they are, how they deserve special rights and so forth? They seem to lose the Herrnmensch menatlity once they move out and see that it actually doesnt matter where you come from.
Geez, people, who reported all of those answers? Its like half of them is gone!

Should tourists be more careful in the most third worlds ?
I had a bad vacation 2 years ago. Dont get me wrong Im looking forward for the friendly southeastasian people however the police and customs are just like mafia; extorting money from local and tourist people.
I think there wont be another riots in Indonesia or Malaysia? after all its been repeated over and over in their history....is it correct? I won´t risk my life to visit them again. the first one is already enough for me!
thanks dear Janet
but those two countries are surrounded by the full of inhumanitiy treatments.
Answer: Should be more careful to honor local cultures.
When my family and I were overseas, several different times, I was embarrassed to be speaking American. Seemed like the others who were, were loud, and noisy laughers.
The tourist is a visitor in the other people's "home" country, so needs to be respectful.
At the same time, for gosh sake don't assume everyone speaks English, or should speak English. Use some imagination to get yr meaning across.

If we all worship the same God, why are Malaysian Christians not allowed to call him Allah?
Christians in Malaysia have always called God "Allah". Dec 31, the government passed a law that allowed Catholics to use the word Allah but only in local church papers which must be clearly marked "For Non-Muslims Only" and only sold on church grounds.
Since then, there have been riots and churches have been burned down.
Answer: Sounds like an infringement on the freedom of religion.
Jews, Christians, and Muslims all worship the one true God of Abraham.
"Allah" is just the word "God" in Arabic.
The language does not matter:
• Allah in Arabic
• God in English
• Dieu in French
• Theos in Greek
• Dei in Latin
• Dios in Spanish
Remember God is the title or role and not God's name which is an entirely different discussion.
With love in Christ.

2008 Malaysia General Election with incidence 513???
Rumours say the winning of the Opposition MAY cause another riot to happen, and many people are talking about it. So, what is your opinion, is that even POSSIBLE to happen again?
Answer: incidence of May13th will not happen.
If theres no racial political parties.
DAP , KeAdilan and PAS do NOT support any particular race.
But, do be very afraid of BN.
As BN still advocates racial basis and umno still uses the NEP as a bait and calls for ketuanan melayu.
If the umno really lost the election,a repeat of May13th is greater. As umno will use it as an excuse to "defend" malays.
Malaysia must do away with racial agenda.
We all will be safer and prosperous when all political parties are multi racial and multi religion.

The election results could project a very polarised Malaysia..?

p.s: pls refrain from flaming each other. just provide some general opinion. =)
Answer: First , you must understand that nobody with a sane mind will runs amok and runs wild crazy doing a riot nor have the time to protest on the streets unless provokes. ( only umno people will runs amok with a parang or a keris anyway )
It is only when the government is doing something wrong and the people gets very pissed off with them.
Racial riot happened before and it might be reality soon if the government is still arrogant and adamant and refuses to be fair to all citizens.
But the future riot is and will not be malay fighting chinese and indian type of racial clash.
But its more like the citizens fighting the government.
The future riot as per see is more towards rebellion.
Means people will revolt and fights the government. And or not discounting to assassinate top government people.
Malaysian are not fools, and we are not pea brained to be incited by umno. Its only people from umno and bn who reminded us May13th racial riot.
This means the government is using racial riot as a trump card. But in reality we the normal citizen is NOT interested in racial riot.
We are more towards changing of the government or to rebel.
Election will not portray polarization , but it will reflects that the people had enough and wanted a change.
Election 2008 might be the turning point for Oppositions, this election is the barometer towards future Malaysian election. As well as to retain or kicks out bn.
I had enough of nonsenses coming from bn.
Its time for a major chance.
If Japan , UK , Australia, Germany, USA changes government, why cant we do the same?
As only by changing the government, there will be competition and progress.

Is there any criticism about Malaysian racist policies within Malaysia?
Im a foreigner in Malaysia. The Chinese & Indians tell me that its better not to speak about politics, because you may end up having riots again. The Malay tell me that the policies are fair because they were the first inhabitants (which is not true, on the peninsula it was orang asli and in sarawak it was iban & bidayu). And also that its because the Chinese are rich anyway (which is also not always true). The Iban tell me that its not fair, but they accept it as long as the country remains peaceful.
Criticism comes from abroad, but what about criticism within the country. Are Malaysians afraid to speak out?
Thanks a lot for all the advice!
Azayi1; I am a foreigner, indeed from Holland and I am just using my own name here. I hope that asking questions is not against the law.
The argument about who was first, is used by people to justify it; but indeed - you can say its strange because then you can continue forever. In the end, it comes to equality. I heard that criticism comes from Western countries - behind closed doors. I wonder if Malaysia can continue with this forever, because its rather unusual for a modern country.
Answer: From abroad - you mean Singapore? There isn't enough criticism from abroad (other than Singapore), honestly. Most of the criticism comes from within Malaysia, from Chinese and Indians. I wouldn't count on Ibans in this matter, they are priviliged and they won't say a word against it. It's just that Chinese wish that Ibans were on their side but they aren't. I live in Sarawak and I haven't met a single Iban who said it's unfair.
Malaysians aren't afraid to speak out, and they are speaking out. Of course they can't speak it out in mass media but complaining voices can be heared all over the country.
I'm a foreigner too. But you should understand that Singapore also practises racism, although it is not constitutionalised, but Chinese Malaysians never mention anything about it because it's Chinese racism against Malays.
Honestly, Chinese here are much better off than Chinese in some other Asian countries where Chinese aren't officially deprived. In Indonesia people killed and raped Chinese and burht their houses and businesses and they got away with it. Those who are really deprived and victimised by racism are foreigners, especially blacks and Bangladeshis.
When police mistreats an immigrant worker from China it will be on covers of all newspapers, but they do it to Bangladeshis, Africans and Pakistanis without any objection from any Malaysian. When they mistreat Chinese, DAP, Gerakan and MCA will speak out, but they torture and mistreat Malays far more often yet nobody speaks out for them.
I do think that Bumi thing should be abolished and that who was here first doesn't legitimise Malays to marginalise others. Huh, so the Chinese told you Orang Asli were in peninsula before Malays, huh? Well, I don't know if that is true, but even if it is, Malays were the first established civilisation in the area. Regarding Ibans and Bidayuh, they migrated to Malaysian Borneo from 17th to 18th century, and Malays established Brunei state in Borneo at leat 300 years earlier. Even in USA there were inhabitants before whites came, remember? And there were laws that privileged whites which were only lifted in 1960s. So Malaysia is a few decades behind...
Simply it doesn't matter that much who was here first. All citizens should be given equal rights.
I have experience Malaysian racism on my own skin, and it wasn't only from Malays, from Chinese and Indians also, especially those who believe in "boleh" spirit and buttkiss Malays. They like to make Malaysian vs. non-Malaysian racism. But in general I think Chinese and Indians are less racist than Malays, and most of my closer friends who aren't foreigners, are Chinese and Indians. Not that I'm racially biased against Bumis but simply I can't befriend people who think I'm inferior to them.
----
Hehe, Jedi, get your facts right, 1675 is in 17th century, and that was only the first wave. I'm talking about Brunei sultanate, not Parameswara. Parameswara was just a king, but Malays had lived there long before him.
Funny thing is that probably first Chinese traders came to Sarawak before Ibans, but Ibans are considered natives, Chinese aren't.
Hushpuppy, racism towards foreigners in Malaysia is a domestic issue. Yes, Chinese and Indians are discriminated, but foreigners are worse off. But if you complain against racism towards your group, you shouldn't support other forms of racism. You misunderstood me, I'm not telling to shut up, I'm pointing out that constitutionalised racism isn't the only form of racism, and not necessarily the worst.
Basically they consider anyone of Austronesian race to be a native, even those born abroad to non-Malaysian parents, like some Indonesians and Chams from Cambodia. The whole Bumi thing is a joke. Abolish it and give citizenship to those who have been living here for long time. there are chinese immigrants from right after Merdeka who are not citizens although Malaysia marked its 50th anniversary of independence, but I met Indonesians who came here in 10970s and 1980s and they got citizenship AND the bumi status. Lovely, isn't it?
Lastly, Malaysians aren't afraid to speak out but the media are controled by the government, and Freedomhouse didn't really give high marks to Malaysia in terms of press freedom (Singapore is even lower though).
No, other countries don't really care about it, because Malaysia is their partner in some issues and they don't want to interfere that much. If Bumi rights are abolished Malays will take to the streets and starts rioting (because only government incited riots are allowed), it's enough to know that a politician threatened anyone who question Malay supremacy with a keris, and another prominent politician said: "soak your keris in Chinese blood". I don't think these racial politics will be ever changed, but Malaysia will see its isolation by the international comunity one day if they continue being noob in the UN.
Racial harmony in Malaysia doesn't work after all, does it? There was a European envoy sent to Malaysia to see the well-advertised racial harmony in Malaysia in 1990's to use the model on solving the crisis in Bosnia. The delegation went back saying "forget it"...
Jedi, the stone from Terengganu proves that Malays inhabited the peninsula at least by 10th century AD. Parameswara was just one of many Malays. You know what? I do have history book, and it opposes your stance. I don't buy the Indonesian theory because there is no logic in it. There are Malayic people elsewhere in the region, that includes Mokens and Chams, and some native tribes in Taiwan. I believe Malays have been in the region for a few millenia. But still it doesn't give them the right to discriminate others. Brunei kingdom and Pattani kingdom existed long before Parameswara and his Malacca.
I don't know what Arab descent are you talking about. If you mean because there are a few Malays who have an Arab anceastor a few hundred years ago, let me tell you that those kind of mixed breed with Chinese also have the same rights; many Malays are mixed with Chinese, including your PM. But both Arab and Chinese identity have been lost in them.

whats happening in malaysia racially?
whats been happening in malaysia? ive heard some disturbing stuff like removing crosses from mission schools
and racial riots involving indians. can malaysia last at least another 10 years as a peaceful country before it descends into chaos?
Answer: well it is a muslin run country, so them yanking crosses doesn't really surprise me, the last riot i heard about from that end was when the indians and the chinese won a majority vote. aside from that it's about as peaceful as one could expect when you're not allowed to kiss in public, but that's just in KL
