Some of the latest on womens rights. What are your thoughts?

The United States kept silent this week as Iran was nominated for membership to the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), thus enabling Iran to get the seat. In the four-year period beginning in 2011, Iran will help set U.N. policy on “gender equality and the advancement of women.” When its term begins, Iran will be joined by 10 other countries: Belgium, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Estonia, Georgia, Jamaica, Liberia, the Netherlands, Spain, Thailand, and Zimbabwe. Iran’s unchallenged election, at a meeting in New York, came just over a week after Iranian media quoted a senior Islamic cleric in Tehran as saying that immodest dress and behavior by women was to blame for an increase in earthquakes. “Many women who do not dress modestly . . . lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes,” said the respected cleric, Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi. Activists Oppose As word of Iran’s intention to join the women’s commission came out, a group of Iranian activists circulated a petition to the U.N. asking that member states oppose its election. “Iran’s discriminatory laws demonstrate that the Islamic Republic does not believe in gender equality,” reads the letter, signed by 214 activists and endorsed by over a dozen human rights bodies. The letter draws a stark picture of the status of women in Iran: “women lack the ability to choose their husbands, have no independent right to education after marriage, no right to divorce, no right to child custody, have no protection from violent treatment in public spaces, are restricted by quotas for women’s admission at universities, and are arrested, beaten, and imprisoned for peacefully seeking change of such laws.” The Commission on the Status of Women is supposed to conduct review of nations that violate women’s rights, issue reports detailing their failings, and monitor their success in improving women’s equality. Yet critics of Iran’s human rights record say the country has taken “every conceivable step” to deter women’s equality. “In the past year, it has arrested and jailed mothers of peaceful civil rights protesters,” wrote three prominent democracy and human rights activists in an op-ed published online Tuesday by Foreign Policy Magazine. U.S. Silence: A Change in Policy In the past, Iran’s treatment of women has drawn criticism from the U.S. State Department. “Provisions in the Islamic civil and penal codes, particularly sections dealing with family and property law, discriminate against women,” according to a U.S. State Department report on international human rights. Under Iranian law, the testimony of a woman in court is worth half as much as that of a man, it said. “Women sometimes received disproportionate punishment for crimes such as adultery, including death sentences.” The report also noted that for a rape victim to secure a conviction against her assailant, she requires the testimony of four men (or three men and two women), and that anyone found to have brought false allegations of rape faces 80 lashes. “The penal code provides that if a woman appears in public without an appropriate hijab, she can be sentenced to lashings and fined.” “Sold Down the River” Three board members of the National Iranian American Council, Dokhi Fassihian, Hadi Ghaemi, and S.B. Anderlini, wrote Wednesday that the Iranian government “has taken every conceivable step to deter women’s progress and institute a regressive regime against gender equality.” Iran getting a seat on the CSW, they said, was “indicative of the ways in which women’s rights are continually sold down the river in exchange for political favors and horse trading on other issues at the U.N.” Suntanned Women to be Arrested This past week, according to a report by the U.K.’s Telegraph, Iran has warned suntanned women and girls who looked like “walking mannequins” will be arrested as part of a new drive to enforce the Islamic dress code. Brig Hossien Sajedinia, Tehran’s police chief, said a national crackdown on opposition sympathizers would be extended to women who have been deemed to be violating the spirit of Islamic laws. He said: “The public expects us to act firmly and swiftly if we see any social misbehavior by women, and men, who defy our Islamic values. In some areas of north Tehran we can see many suntanned women and young girls who look like walking mannequins.” “We are not going to tolerate this situation and will first warn those found in this manner and then arrest and imprison them.” Iran: “A Country of Particular Concern” The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) recently named Iran and 12 other nations as “countries of particular concern” for severe violations of religious liberty. According to a report by the USCIRF, “The government of Iran continues to engage in systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom, including prolonged dete

Is Bangkok a safe place for tourists with kids during election time?

Okay, so Ive been reading about the violent, political protests in Bangkok that occurred last year. This year, the elections "are scheduled" to occur by June 2011, but from what I can tell, the elections have a history of being postponed. My mom is planning a trip with three children (ages 10, 12, and 16) to Bangkok this June. Im not sure that this is a good idea because articles about Thailands ongoing disputes with Cambodia are saying that political tensions are expected to be heightened if the elections do occur in June. I have told my mom that I think we should wait a few weeks to see how the situation plays out, but she wants to buy the tickets as soon as possible and says that if things arent looking good in Bangkok, then we can "easily" book a flight to India when we get there. She says Im overreacting but last year, over 80 people died and many buildings were burned in Bangkok around the time that the elections were supposed to take place. I would like to hear your opinion because I may be overreacting and Bangkok might very well be a safe place for tourists during election time this year. Thank you very much for your time! :) I am the 16 year old child so Im asking partly because Im concerned about my own safety and because my mom isnt taking me seriously.
Answer: I lived in Thailand for 2 years during the time when the protests were the worst and Central World got burned down and felt that the protests were always confined to a very small area- one that you could easily research ahead of time and avoid. Usually the cops have the protest and all the streets surrounding it blocked off so you can't end up in the middle of it without trying. Also I'm pretty sure all the people who disappear are Thais and usually very actively involved in the fighting political parties. Honestly though Bangkok is a pretty standard city and not the most interesting place in Thailand. If I were your mom I would fly into the city, maybe spend 1 day there and then either head to the north to Chiang Mai or to the beaches in the south. In both those areas you wouldn't have to worry about your safety and would have a much nicer and more exciting vacation! Air Asia has really cheap flights from Bangkok that only take 1 hour to get to other parts of the country or else you can jump on a VIP bus and ride down in style. Or head down to the beach at Hua Hin which is only a 3 hour van ride from Bangkok (don't go to Pattaya). Thai people are typically very friendly and non-violent, what is going on in Bangkok right now should not sour the whole country for you. Have a great vacation!
