What would happen if you run a 2 cylinder motor with only one cylinder firing?
I was working on a kohler magnum 18 hp v-twin, and I started it up with only one of the boots on the spark plugs. I was wondering if it could and did damage the motor.
I had both spark plug boots off, and i happened to forget to plug the second boot on the second spark plug. Both wires are fine, Im just curious if it did any damage.
Answer: it should only run at half the power if at all and shake like mad.once it is plugged back in, it might smoke for a littel bit but then clear up and run normal.

What makes a good boat motor from a cheap one?
Just for the sake of it, I was looking into getting either a WaterSki, or an Inflatable Boat with a motor. Price tag wise, it seemed as if the Boat plus motor was more expensive considering Id have to buy the motor. But Ive seen a couple of motors running around here for like $300 upwards (based on E-bay). What makes a good boat motor vs. a cheap one, and would it be better to just go with the WaterSki ?
Answer: You need to interview the person you are buying it from. If they have used it alot then it is a good one.....an unused boat motor is a piece of junk.

Do you need a motor cycle license to drive one of those scooters?
There is a special license for motor cycle drivers, right? Do you need to take a test and get a motor cycle license if you get a scooter? Im talking about one that goes about 40 mph?
Also, what is the fastest scooter you can get without needing a motor cycle license?
Do you have to take a drivers test to get a motorcycle license? And I suppose you need special insurance too?
Answer: there are 2 types of licenses.
Class L: for scooters/bikes under 150cc)....these bikes can not go on the hwy.
Class M: for bikes/scooters over 150cc. Class M can ride lower than 150cc also.
i think 250cc is the minimum amount of cc's for the highway, so depending of what your use needs are. You might as well take a MSF course and get ur class M.

How much different from one phase to another in 3-phase motor?
Do some one now how much different it is ok to have on a 3-phase motor between one phase and another in percentage?
Answer: I believe you're asking what the max voltage imbalance between phase voltages is acceptable?
If so the NEMA MG-1 document recommends not running the motor if the difference in phase voltages exceeds 5%.
Imbalanced phase voltages create negative sequence currents that produce magnetic flux that rotates in the opposite direction of the rotation of the motor. This reduces motor torque, creates heat and reduces motor life.
Per MG-1 you should derate the motor horsepower when there is difference in phase voltage. Up to 1% difference results in a very negligible derating factor, however by the time you get to the max 5% imbalance the derating factor is about 75%.

How long does an electric trolling motor run on one battery charge?
I want to find some way of being on the water electrically at very low cost. Ive noticed that there are some really cheap trolling motors out there. I reckon if I attached one to a small boat, it might just do the trick.
Can I get a few hours out of one, somehow? Like, 5?
Answer: We have a 15' tri hull with a trolling motor we use with 2 automotive batteries .We switch off when 1 gets tired and we use them all day , off and on. Yeah , man , go for it! It ain't the fastest unit around , but it beats rowing!

Answer: The motor must be re-sealed for reliable operation. The valve-seats depend on leaded gas for longgevevity. This engine-250ci?-235ci?194ci? can be best sold with absolute proof of it's year and it's total correctness. You must remove the valve cover to take pictures of the casting time imprint and of the stamped number pad I.D. #'s on the block. You must also show all the block cast features such as the motor mounts and clutch attachment bosses. Beyond this-list all accessory drive brackets it goes with. P.s. brackets and a.c. brackets and multiple belt pulleys are worth more than the engine it'self. You can easilly triple the $400 dollar worth if it has the p.s and a.c. brackets and triple-belt pulley assembly.

What is the difference between the d16y8 and the d16z6 motor in the 99 Civic EX? Which one do I got?
Ive been looking for bolt on mods for it on various sites but Ive noticed that they sell them for either the d16y8 or the d16z6 motors, and Im not sure which motor is in mine. How do I know which one I have? Im driving a 99 Civic automatic model in the USA.
Is one just for the manual and one for auto?
Answer: You have a D16y8!! They are in 96 - 2000 Civic Ex. The D16z6 is in 92 - 95 Civic EX. The D16y8 has like 2 more Horsepower and torque but basically the same thing they just have different intake manifolds. A lot of bolt ons will fit both motors

How many brushless motors can one ESC Programmer support?
I would like to build an RC C-130 with four electric brushless motors. How many ESC Programmers do i need? If i need more than one, how do i connect them all together so i can control the throttle of all four engine from the throttle stick on the transmitter?
Answer: I believe, tho i'm not certain, you can run more than a single brushless motor through an esc with a simply split cable. It's not done for 2 good reasons.
The amperage the motors would draw would require you to have an incredibly high amp rated esc to deal with the current, the largest generally made is 150 amps constant. Any more than this and it would require more than one esc.
A single brushless motor would be sufficient to really shift something, 4 strikes me as over kill.
I guess you have 2 options. The first would be to run all 4 props through a belt from a single motor. Or, have 4 small (370 size) brushless motors, which should give the power required, without frying the esc. (Hopefully, check the draw, under load, of the motors before buying, the amps must add up to less than your ESCs max rating!)
The last thing that occurs is that you would need a lipo, that is very high C rating, therefore very big, therefore very heavy, therefore inconvenient for a model required to fly.
This is all summise, i hope significantly smarter people will correct any mistakes ive surely made.

How to run a three phase motor always in one direction even if three phase are changed by mistake ?
Basically I want to make sure that three phase motor rotates only in one direction so it should stop if any phase is ever changed by mistake or by electrician. So I am looking for an inexpensive solution to achieve this.
Answer: There are a number of ways to achieve the result that you are looking for. I cannot tell you which you'd find to be the least expensive as I do not know all of the installation details that I would need to know in order to fabricate a custom solution. However, if cost is the largest concern, the cheapest method would be to simply utilize a "Lock Out - Tag Out" method to safe guard against unauthorized or unknown phase swapping. Simply place a combination padlock or keyed padlock, along with a weather-proof tag that gives a phone number and name of the solely responsible and authorized personnel on each and every distribution point. This is a $5 dollar fix that really can't be beat.
Should you like a more customized and automated method, you may want to check out having a "Phase Monitoring" system installed. An example would be the 3-Phase monitoring system that Time Mark offers. You may find them online at www.time-mark.com. I am not affiliated with them, nor do I have any idea of their cost, but they offer a relay monitoring system, as do other companies, that would give you the protection you are seeking.
Finally, another option that may be fairly inexpensive, would be to have someone rig you some type of 'limit switch' to some portion of the rotational portion of the mechanical rotor of the motor system. An example would be some sort of micro switch that would break the motor starting coil's power in the event of a reverse mechanical movement by the motor itself. That type of solution would require having someone physically inspect and prefabricate some sort of bracketing or similar method to install this type of solution.

How to change polarity of a motor with one command source?
The motor needs to be connected to a power source which would be actuated by a wirless command. But, that actuation would cause motion of the motor in one direction only, how do i reverse the direction?
Answer: Assuming this is a small DC motor with permanent magnets, it can be reversed by reversing the supply polarity. The remote control receiver device will presumably have more than one digital output channel that can be turned on and off.
These outputs will operate a switch or relay to:
a) Power up the motor (on/off)
b) Reverse the motor.
The reversing relay is operated using a driver transistor connected between the remote and the relay coil (see second link below), and needs 2 changeover contacts to reverse the supply polarity (see first link below). These must be break before make contacts, so the supply is not shorted as the relay contacts change over.
A second method is to have two channels as above, but use one for on/off forward and one for on/off reverse. Some sort of interlock is required to prevent it being switched to forward and reverse at the same time. This logic can use diodes, transistors, integrated circuits, or relays.
A third method uses two power supplies with a half bridge circuit using transistors to connect one or the other supply through the motor to the supply common.
A fourth method uses a H bridge using 4 transistors to reverse the supply to the motor. You can look this up if interested.
If the remote has only one output, it may be possible to use a sequence of pushing the button, like first press on, second forward, third off, fourth reverse, fifth off, sixth back to 1 again. This uses a counter and other electronics. Garage door openers use a variation on this, with a single channel control, where the motor controller choses which direction to move by knowing the current position, and limit switches control its range. If it is closed it opens, if it is open it closes, and if it is in between it continues if stopped or stops if running.

How do you replace an air conditioner fan motor that has a 3 prong capacitor with one that has a two prong?
Im trying to replace our AC compressor fan motor. The old one had a three prong capacitor with one wire running to the contactor then the fan motor, one wire running directly to the motor and a 3rd wire running to the actual compressor. The motor the parts store gave me is only a two prong capacitor. I know both of the wires from the fan motor go to different sides, but now where do I put the wire from the actual compressor?
Answer: No, your old fan motor connected to the units dual run capacitor. Just hook the new motor to the new capacitor using the two brown wires coming off the new motor. And leave the other capacitor alone.

Is it possible to put one motor in the front and back of your car?
I was making kind of a joke to someone and I told them that I was going to put one motor in the front and in the back of the car! He told that its possible! That with a computer that controls the engines it could be done! Is it possible?
Answer: yes it is, but will be very expensive having custom parts made in order for it to work. Would be an extreme amount of work in order to make it work right

Can I use different motor oil different grade other than the one suggested by the car manufacturer?
i own a 1000cc compact car..... the car manufacturer suggested castrol 10W-30 grade motor oil. on the next servicing, i plan to use better brand which is Shell Helix Ultra Fully Synthetic grade 5W-40. Will my car engine get damaged if i use different grade other than the suggested one? Thanks.
Answer: 5W30 versus 10W30
Virtually all new passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. use either 5W30 or 10W30 oil. The difference between the two is that the 5W30 flows better when cold, so if you live in a cold climate or operate your vehicle in a cold climate during the winter months, you should use 5W30 if it is the preferred oil for your vehicle. If you live in a sub-tropical climate and don't operate your vehicle in cold climates, then 10W30 is acceptable as long as the manufacturer specifies that it is permissible to use it.
Is there a disadvantage to using an oil that flows better when cold, i.e. 5W30 versus 10W30?
Sometimes, but usually not. The crux of the issue is this: the bigger the difference between the cold oil viscosity and the hot oil viscosity, the more the volume of viscosity modifiers and the less the volume of base stock. If you are good about following the manufacturer's recommended oil change interval then stick with the 5W30 if that is the preferred oil for your vehicle, even if 10W30 is acceptable in warmer climates. Older cars may specify 10W30 only. This is because they need a little more viscosity when cold to keep a protective film on the cylinder walls. There have been instances where the larger amount of viscosity modifiers that are present in 5W30 have broken down due to excessive heat and have left carbon deposits on the valves, but this is extremely rare. The proper fix would be to reduce the excessive heat, but the workaround was to use an oil with less viscosity modifiers.
Synthetic oil was originally developed for high performance racing engines. Mobil tried to popularize synthetic oil for passenger vehicles back in the early 1970's. At the time, Mobil was promoting 20K or 25K oil changes with synthetic, but they soon backed down from this. Synthetic oil is a good choice if you have a vehicle with a high performance engine (in fact synthetic is required for many of these engines). It is also a good choice if your vehicle is operated in extremely cold climates. It has higher resistance to breakdown caused by heat and it flows better in extreme cold. Unfortunately for the synthetic oil industry there is virtually no advantage to using synthetic oil in a non-high performance engine that is operated in moderate climates. You probably could go a bit longer between oil changes with a synthetic, i.e. following the normal service schedule even if you fall into the severe service category, but I wouldn't advise this. In short, synthetic may give you the peace of mind of knowing that you are using an oil that is far better than necessary for your vehicle, but it won't reduce wear or extend the life of the engine. The mistake some people make it to wrongly extrapolate these benefits onto normal engines operated in mild climates, with the ultimate lack of any knowledge being manifested with statements such as "synthetics provide 'Peace of Mind,' or 'Cheap Insurance,'" or other such nonsense.
Never use a non-API certified synthetic oil (there are many of these on the market). The problem with the non-API certified synthetics is that they contain too much phosphorus (in the form of the additive ZDDP (Zinc Dialkyl Dithiophosphates)). The API has limited the amount of phosphorus because phosphorus shortens the life of the catalytic converter. These oils are fine for snowmobiles, motorcycles, and older cars that don't have a catalytic converter, and the extra ZDDP does provide additional wear protection. Unfortunately, the marketers of some the non-certified oils do not explicitly and honestly state the reason for the lack of API certification. You can check the status of API certification on the API web site. Be certain to go not just by the manufacturer name but by the actual product as well. This is because a manufacturer will sometimes have both certified and non-certified products. Suffice it to say that Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Castrol, & Havoline all make synthetic oils that are API certified and that can be purchased at auto parts stores and other retail outlets. Amsoil has one product line, XL-7500 that is API certified, but it's other lines contain too much ZDDP to be certified and should not be used in vehicles with catalytic converters.
