How do the people of Singapore celebrate independence day?
Answer: We call it National Day - 9th of August. It's most represented by a parade on that day.
One month prior to that, many of our apartment blocks, government buildings and community centres will be adorned with flags and other decorative colours or national emblems, especially the blocks facing main roads where tourists may pass by. We pay workers to put up all of these, but there may be one in every few thousand who shows patriotism by working with the "resident's committee" to lead the workers. Resident's Committee also provide the national flags for you to hang outside your window, they collect them back at the end of the month. How thoughtful right?
More taxpayers money will be spent on a large government parade for thousands, and fireworks, fighter airborne displays that lasts for half an hour? Lots of security measures are taken during parades like these because head of state and many ministers will be present. Exciting choreographed movements, dance and songs are displayed when the "National day songs" are being sung.
Each year they have a new "national day song", realeased in July. Those who are still in primary and secondary schools have to learn and wave flags while they sing.
Some people used to queue (and fight) for nights for the parade tickets (lots of freebies are given in the goodie bags, so you wonder...) Only in the past 2 years did the government let you apply for the tickets over the internet. You see the ugliness of our country too, at the end of the parade, with all the rubbish on the parade site. Roads have to be painstakingly cleaned by enlisted army personnel and foreign workers.
I'm guessing probably less than a fifth of the population's really interested in the spectacle of the parade... Coz most people realise that's not what shows patriotism.
I try to be proud, but it's funny coz we don't talk about how proud we are or show the flag at any other time of the year. Personally, i think we waste a lot of resources just to feel patriotic for 1 month in a year.
That's how we "celebrate". Category: Independence Day

do u agree that india can experience a double digit growth if it further liberalize its economy?
i have read about indian economy including the history; the economy was the worlds largest from 1AD until conial time; during the conial time, the west exploit indian resource that lead india to closed its economy after independence by imposing socialist policies; in 1990s, india liberalize its economy after experiencing balance of payment crisis; over the next decades, india experience robust growth but not double digit could be due to still regulation on free economy market structure;
do u think india should further reform its economy in order to achieve double digit growth and at the same time reduce its so called disguise unemployment rate? from my point of view, yes; this would create more enterprises and jobs for ordinary citizen especially the young population; im confident that india will be worlds largest economy again maybe before 2060; jai hind
the recent data by Transperancy International cited that india rank 87th least corrupted state; with this rank, how can india double its growth? in fact, india should tackle corruption so that there will be equal opportunties for every indians; india can do better by being more transperant, and may even experience double digit growth to improve the standard of living of individuals;
i think india is not doing much in terms of corruption otherwise it could have experience a very high GDP growth rate;
what r ur thoughts for india economy? please share ur views

about me: i was an economic student but without economic degree; i really love economics and love to hear from people who are interested; im just less than high school but i have economic knowledge because i love the subject;
Answer: Just growth alone will not help the whole population. The trickle effect of economic growth takes a long time to reach the lower strata of the population. this is the greatest pitfall for ay growing economy. If this is not handled properly there is bound to be chaos and this can stall growth.
More liberalisation will be advantageous. India's population is a driving factor at the moment. This huge market will attract a lot of foreign capital which in turn will drive industries to produce more thus giving jobs for the masses. The thing to be watched here is the salary growth. If salary is going to grow fast then the capital will try to go to the lower wage countries. The fine balance is required here. we have to take care of the peoples need and at the same time we must keep ourselves competitive. India wage earners salaries are going a bit faster than the other countries wage earners. so this can be negative factor in the long run.
Infrastructure is another one to concentrate on. As industries grows there must be enough water and power to drive them.
Corruption per se will not hinder the growth. Foreign investors factor these things in their economic model and they will not bother much. But the name of the country will be spoiled with all sort of reports and this may prevent not so big players from coming to India. Category: Economics

Pursue unfulfilled dream at age 32 and come back nothing?
Hi, I am living in Asia, a typical working hard society, Singapore. Now age 32, Female. Since young, been wanting to experience life overseas and, gained independence. But it never happen because of resources problem. Hence, I continue my study in my own country and had a degree. Everything was ok till one day, I had the financial ability to pursue my dream already. However, things changed. After working for more than 10 years, I kinda of found what best for my career. For practical sake, I know I would not want to aspire to be a career woman. Hence, further into Master degree is my dream but will not eventual be useful for my career purpose. At the moment, I have no family commitment, no loans or whatsoever. My starting career was good... however, have gone through quite a few change of career. Do you think I should go for it knowing that it will only be a fulfillment but not an eventual goal for my career purposes?

Can being the only race in a long environment harm a child?
I have been the only white person in institutions for many years. Am I alone? Could i be screwed up technicall?
Apart from Birth in Britain and pre school in london till 10....
I have been the only white person in my social groups... institutions... etc for the following periods
Primary school in Singapore/Jakarta/Hong Kong
Secondary school in Inda/Singapore
Prep school in Singapore
University in China and Singapore
Army in Singapore
Can this screw up a person? Because apparently ive heard of parents and psychologists in Britain rooting against being the only racial group in a community for their children...
Apart from me feeling a little bit culturally/racially prejudiced towards others due to having travelled and been exposed to other cultures more so than the average european/american/aussie. I want to know if there may be anything wrong with me developmentally?
So even though I am no serial killer... nor am I depressed, though I do get a little lonely sometimes due to lack of conversation from local people. Could I be negatively affected by my upbringing?
I have only 3 good friends from Asian countries. The rest of my friends and family are all european. I have always found it difficult to talk to local people in Singapore, so most of my friends i meet there are all foreign, but they do not live in Singapore full time as I do.
My parents tell me not to make a big deal out of it, and it is nothing. But I would just like other expert opinions on it.
Has anyone been brought up in the same situation? Whereby one is like the only race in a group for extended periods of time from a young age.
The only good things about me I can think of from my exposure;
1. I am completely colour blind and will readily interact with anyone without judgement.
Bad things
1. I tend to dislike a specific geographical category of Asian people (which i will not name here for fear or preserving my identity, since i believe i am the only one in my situation).
2. I tend to sometimes believe that some cultures are wholly inferior and should never have been given their independence. But at the same time i recognize sovereignty and freedom for all peoples.

I do have very few friends. But on a day to day basis I am always mostly on my own.
Only white man in class. Only white man in the course.. only white man in the platoon/military/posting/office/school.
It does get lonely.
And locals always ask me Why I am in their country, like I am a weirdo because my parents work there when everyone else wants to go to America.

For those who are curious about the military situation.
It happened because father made a mistake with his permanent resident status and i was conscripted.
It was unavoidable. ANd I served because I wanted to be a man like everyone else there and because I felt it might be useful.
And if i didnt serve, I would have been charged.
Regardless.. i was forced. And I am stuck here for 4 years of uni until I can leave.
Please do not ask about it. I just want to know what the generic diagnosis is for someone like me and if there are any other people in the same boat which is;
THe REALLY minority race.
Answer: Treat others as you would have them treat you.You can not go wrong with any race then.You will also earn the love and respect of others by doing this. Category: Adolescent
