Im an American and Ill be visiting Singapore soon. And i just realized ill be there for National Day! All I can seem to find is information about the parade? How would I go about getting into the stadium to see the parade, if its possible at all? Ill be arriving in Singapore a little over a week and a half before National Day. Are there any other celebrations other than the parade? If so, what are they? Also, do most businesses close? I had originally planned to leave Singapore on Aug 9 to continue travelling onto Malaysia, but now I think I must change my plans so I can experience National Day!
Answer: Hello! The parade is not in a stadium it is held in marina bay. There also won't be any celebrations b4 the parade just alot of NDP(national day parade) banners hanging around so you don't need to worry about businesses closing. You would also require ticket to get inside marina bay but the tickets will be released 3-4 months b4 the actual parade itself.However, what i would suggest if you are willing to spare the money you can book a room at marina mandarin hotel and have a bird's eye view of the entire parade. If not, You can just soak in the atmosphere of the parade outside the stadium through a widescreen TV.There will be alot of people just outside happy camping too.

Answer: I don't know what you mean by 'commemorated' but Singapore celebrated her first National Day in 1966, one year after Singapore's independence from Malaysia on 9 August 1965. The first National Day Parade started in the morning at 0900. People came as early as 0700 in order to get good vantage points. Singapore's first President, Mr Yusof bin Ishak and Singapore's first Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, were seated with members of the government at the grandstand on the steps of City Hall.

Any comments on the Singapore National Day Parade 2006?

Watched the SNDP 2006 yesterday evening and overall, the parade is interesting and the stunts are good. However, the narrators in Channel 8 are not pro. They kept saying the wrong things and even could not decide if they are addressing the President or Prime Minister, kept saying the wrong things even I believed they had scripts pre-written for them.
Answer: yeah, the stunts were good, especially the fireworks! But i didnt watch the Channel8 one. But i think i might prefer the channel 5 one if i watched the two channels.

how do you celebrate national day in a special way ?
Answer: i celebrated with my special needs students - by making our very own flags using drawing paper each. They colour half of the drawing paper red, then pasted stars and crescent (I printed out the stars and crescent - then cut for them) then, we sing Happy Birthday Singapore - in English, Malay, Mandarin, Bahasa Indonesia and Tagalog (we have Indonesian and Filipino maid in the classroom). Unfortunately, none of us can sing Happy Birthday song in Tamil. Then each of us try to blow a candle each (there are 4 big and 4 small candles - as Singapore is 44 years old) Then we eat the cake, plus other goodies while having National Day songs (esp the old songs that are upbeat - like Stand Up for Spore) as the background music
