How expensive is a sphynx cats and do they have nice personalitys?
I currently have 2 Domestic short hair cats . One Female tuxedo and one male brown tiger. They get along for the most part. I am thinking about buying a Sphynx cat or kitten. I saw one at a cat show and loved it. I was wondering how expensive do they run? Do they have nice personalitys and do they like to be picked up? Will they get along with other cats?
Answer: The Sphynx STARTS at around $800 for a pet quality cat. Show quality cats run into the THOUSANDS.
Are you aware that since they lack fur they're VERY sensitive to both heat and cold?
Are you aware that since they don't have fur to absorb oils they must be bathed WEEKLY or they get really greasy?
I don't think it would fair to have a Sphynx in a home with two other cats especially two that "get along for the most part". This would imply there's cat fights and a Sphynx's lack of fur means it can easily get scratched up since it has no protection.
Personality has NOTHING to do with the breed of a cat - every cat is different.

How well do Sphynxs do with children and small dogs?
There is a Sphynx at a rescue that I would like to adopt. In general I know each cat is different but is the breed generally good with children and small dogs?
I have 3 Chihuahuas and a 23 month old. The cat would have major run of the house and of course kept inside.
The dogs wouldnt bother the kitty and we are working with our son to be gentle with animals.
Anyway what is the breeds normal temperament
Answer: According to "Cats 101," a program I watched on the Animal Planet last night, they make excellent and genial, very healthy household pets, getting on well with children and other animals.

How do you groom a Sphynx for cat show?
Im new to cat showing. I have three Sphynx cats that my sister and I will be taking to our fist cat show. Does anyone have any tips on how to groom them for a show? Besides the normal bathing and nail trimming? Thanks!
Answer: Sphynx's also frequently need their ears cleaned. It is very essential! Cleaning the ears is not difficult and usually only needs to be done weekly. But make sure to always keep them clean to lower the risk of bacterial infections. Light brown wax in the ears are normal, but black, red, yellow or green indicates infection and kitty should be seen by a vet.
You will also need to keep their toenails clean and nails trimmed. Dirt builds up under the flaps of their toes and on their toenails. You can use a pet wipe for this (I recommend all-natural pet wipes for any cleaning.) You will also need to give some extra care to their eyes. They occasionally need their eyes to be wiped or cleaned because of their lack of eyelashes. Just use a warm damp cloth or sometimes only a soft tissue is needed.

Where can I buy a sphynx cat in Perth, Western Australia?
Im looking to buy a Sphynx cat in perth but im not sure where to get them because they are so rare. Could anyone please give me some advice? Thanks :)
does anyone also know how much money one would cost. i heard they are pretty expensive.
Answer: I got my 2nd Sphynx from from a Perth breeder OzSphynx. They are lovely guys and are very helpful with their potential buyers. Be prepared to learn about the breed before you buy though, they expect you to buy their book as a condition of going on their waiting list. You can read about them here http://www.australianSphynx.com/Sphynx_Kittens/Sphynx_Adoption/Sphynx_adoption.html
Sphynxes in Australia cost between 1200-1800 (which is why I am not a rich person as I have three!)

Does anyone know where to adopt a sphynx cat?
Im looking to adopt a Sphynx cat in the Los Angeles area. I would prefer to adopt from a shelter or foster home. Does anyone know any good resources?
Answer: There are not a lot of SX breeders in the LA area, and it is highly unlikely that you will find one locally at a shelter. You might consider looking for a retiree if the cost is an issue, you might be able to find a young adult that will have many years ahead of it as a happy pet :)
BUT, why a Sphynx? They have WONDERFUL personalities, but they must be bathed once or twice a week, or they will leave oily patches where the like to lay! Then there is the cleaning of the nail beds, and the ears, ... If you want a hairless cat, you should Google "peterbald cat", they look like an Oriental, long and lean, big low ears, share the very outgoing, dog-like personality of the Sphynx, and need to be bathed about once every other month. They are SUPER, check them out!

What are sphynx cats like in terms of their personality and behavior, compared to other breeds?
Ive always been fascinated by Sphynx cats and would like to own them at some stage in my life.
Im curious to know from people who have owned them or know people that do, what their personalities are generally like, compared to other species of cat. I have read that theyre more dog-like than cat-like.
Answer: The Sphynx has a childlike personality, and makes a wonderful companion for the person who is looking for a baby in their home, or someone who has never had children and would like to fill that empty space in their lives, or for the retired person or pensioner with an empty house.
The best way of describing the personality of the Sphynx is – half child, half monkey, half kitten and half puppy. They are extremely intelligent, incredibly lovable, patient, social and tolerant with children, dogs and other animals.
They just love to be around their human friends – In fact they demand to always be around you.
The Sphynx hates being alone, they need company all day long whether it’s human or another cat or a small dog. I always say that they are like lap dogs in a cat form. When they are not helping you with your daily chores, they are on top of you or all over you. They are definitely not the kind of cat that you just see when it is feeding time.
When visitors come, they are the first to meet them at the door and they will take the conversation over, if you let them. If your visitors are not cat lovers, you will have to put them away, as they will only leave the visitors laps when they do some acrobatic tricks to show off for them. Do not be surprised when one of them disappears and returns with a toy mouse to play with, in the middle of the conversation.
The Sphynx gets to know their names very quickly and will come when called – they just love to play hide and seek and you can entertain them for hours with playing fetch.
If taken on car rides from an early stage in their lives, they get to love to ride around with you. Just make sure that no one sees them, as it may cause some unwanted accidents!
“It looks just like E.T., Smegol, Yoda or a space man”, "Oh, but they are ugly”, many would say when they first see a Sphynx, but after spending some time with a Sphynx, their wonderful personality and soft warm naked bodies, will soon change their minds.
The Sphynx does have various looks and although they still meet the standard, not one of them looks the same as the next.
They appear naked, but the Sphynx is not a totally naked cat. Their bodies are covered with a soft down that is almost imperceptible to both the eye and the touch. A feeling of resistance may be felt when stroking the skin of some cats. The texture of the skin has been compared to peach skin, a suede hot water bottle, a horse’s warm muzzle or a heated chamois.
Tortie Female Kitten 3 weeks old
They have some very fine hair over the bridge of their noses and on their feet. They may also have some fine hair on their tail, at the back of their ears and scrotum. Some of them get some fuzz when the weather changes and some of them get fuzz when their hormones change, (Females in heat and so on) which is normal.
Their bodies are warmer to the touch than other cats, but in fact their body temperature is no higher.
The skin is very wrinkled in kittens. Adults should retain as many wrinkles as possible, especially on the head, but should not affect the cat’s normal function.
Sphynx have huge ears, large eyes and prominent whisker pads and cheekbones. Generally they lack whiskers, but some of them have a few very short ones. They have a rounded abdomen, which makes them look as if they just had a big meal. The tail is long and flexible. Their paw pads are thicker than in other breeds, giving the impression that they are “walking on air cushions.” Their toes are long and are often used like little fingers. These cats are of medium size and the males can be up to 25% bigger than the females. They come in all colours and patterns.
Never leave your Sphynx or any cat for that matter on it's own in the bathroom or near the bathroom, when running your bath. Always run the cold water first and then the warm water, so that you never have a very hot bath at any time. Many Sphynx has burned themselves severely or even to death, by jumping/falling into a hot bath. This happens more often than what one thinks, so be very careful when running a bath.
The Sphynx is an indoor cat only, as it gets burned by the sun - same as we do. They may only go outside under strict supervision of their owner, when weather permits. This does not bother them, as long as they have a companion and lots of toys and sufficient space to run around in the house.
People often think they do not need grooming, but this is not true. The Sphynx is actually a high maintenance cat. Because it lacks fur/hair, the oils that all cats excrete through their skin are not absorbed into the hair, so the oil lies on the bare skin and attracts grime. They become dirty quite quickly and need a bath frequently. The claws and ears also get dirty very quickly and have to be cleaned weekly to keep it clean.
Surgically declawing your kitten is cruel and should never ever be done.

I am getting a Sphynx cat, what is a good price for a kitten near Georgia?
I have looked around on the net and have seen amounts from hundreds to thousands, and I dont know what price will get me a decent Sphynx. Please help.
Answer: The prices you have seen are not out of line. Sphynx, http://www.absolutelycats.com/23Sphynx.html are still somewhat rare so reliable breeders are able to command and receive premium prices.
I would be very careful selecting a breeder. The most expensive is not always the best and certainly be wary of a price that seems especially low.

Are sphynx cats good for people who are allergic to cats?
I am allergic to cats and could never have one, if I touch a cat and get my hands near my face my eyes get irritated and start swelling and my nose gets all runny, do you think, or do you know if the Sphynx breed will have an effect on me?
Answer: More then likely you could react. Why? Because Sphynx lick themselves and if you are allergic to saliva and not the fur, then you would probably react MORE to a hairless cat.
The only way to tell is for you to try to find a Sphynx breeder near your or visit a cat show where they may be so you can handle one.
I bred/shown Cornish Rexes and would be willing to have people come and handle my cats or borrow one for a few days before they invested in a kitten to test for allergies.
Here's a list of breeders who might be able to help you test your allergies. Sphynx cost $800+ for pets and you don't want to invest in a cat that you cannot keep.

What is the difference beetween a sphynx and a peterbald?
Are they still concider a Sphynx? I know the peterbald developed in russia an the Sphynx in Canada. But if they mate will the still be concidered a pure bred Sphynx?
What is the difference beetween apearence
Answer: Two different breeds. From what I've read the Peterbald used more of the oriental type of cats in build. They are a lot more refined with long legs and bodies. The Sphynx was using the Devon Rexes for awhile till they had some genetic problems - they no longer use them in the background. They are build closer to a Devon in body but not head shape.

How to go about getting a Sphynx?
I started with high hopes of getting a certain color and age but now I just want a younger hairless Sphynx. Price is obviously something Im concious about. I think buying animals online is one huge gigantic bad idea. So Im wondering how I would go about finding a reputable breeder.
Answer: There's a breed rescue that tries to place them as well--for adoption prices. Just google 'Sphynx cat breed rescue' and contact the ones closes to you.
Our shelter actually had two of them this year.

Where can I find a Sphynx breeder in Southern California?
I would like to have a Sphynx as my first cat, but I dont know I can find a good breeder. I have been looking at different cat breeds for a month now and decided on a Sphynx. Thank you for your help.
Answer: For your first cat you're going to buy a breed that STARTS at around $1,000 and requires weekly baths? And how is it that you've decided on this breed and yet don't know where to find a breeder? Are you picking this breed simply from photos on the internet? Wrong way to go about picking a breed. Go to shows and meet breeder/owners and their cats and kittens. Then you can see if this truly is the breed for you and you'll also find a breeder. TICA calendar http://ticamembers.org/calendar/

How do I make my sphynx cat stop sucking on himself?
I have a Sphynx cat that is 7 months old that has this habit of sucking on himself before he goes to sleep. This "harmless" habit leaves little marks on his beautiful hairless body and is very annoying when Im trying to sleep. Ive heard he will probably grow out of it but I dont think he will. How do I make him stop?
Answer: my uncles cat used to do this. It happens when the kitten is took away from its mother before its fully weened. He just misses his mother. He connects the feel of sucking on himself to the feel of sucking on his mother. You cant stop it, and dont scold him for doing it. He WILL grow out of it, just like when kittens are getting weened they go through a phase of trying to get milk out of their mother. When i would suggest doing is cuddling him until he falls asleep. Maybe making a 'bean bag'-- cut off an old pant leg and sew up three sides, fill with uncooked rice and sew up the other side, every night heat his 'bean bag' up so its warm (but not hot) it will remind him of the warmth of his mother, he might turn to that as comfort rather than sucking himself.
