Do we really want to be Europeans?

I am speaking on the ground of Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese. Grils in those countries are now stigmatized as wanting to become European. All the evidence for this notion is: 1. eyelid surgeries to make eyes rounder and bigger. 2. avoiding the sun to stay pale. 3. want to be skinny. 4. dye their hair blonde I did not do a comprehensive reserch on this issue, and my knowledge of the full historical content is also limited. However, I grow up in China and am very into Korean/Japanese pop culture/fashion. From a purely personal perspective, there are some points I want to make, and please be aware they can be very wrong and ignorant, and I am also if anyones being disturbed by my limitations. 1. Not all asians have small.slanted eyes. A round eye with double-folded eye lids are generally more desirbable universall, become it is more expressive and implies a sense of openness. Amongthe Asian population (china,korea, japan), there are approximately half with single eye lids and half with double eye lids. However, the focus is not mainly the eyelids but the whole face. And a double eye lids generally enhance the overall appearace of the face. Nonetheless, they are plenty of Asian girls have pretty single eyelids that are more suitable to their faces. As a result, they do not do the surgery. My point is, the surgery for not imitation, but for a more desirable look, within the Asian culture. If you really want to use the word imitation I would rather say half of the population want to mimic the other half. 2.Pale skin symbolizes upper-class. It means one does not need to work in the field. Pale skin has been valued in China for thousands of years, even before they know that white people looks like. 3. plumpness was valued in asian cultures as a symbol of good life. just as that one period in Europe. However, as the standard of living improves in asian countries, being plumpness means lazy and being skinny means one has the time and leisure to work out and stay fit. This works exactly the same way as in western countries. Moreover, more Asians are generically skinny. 4. I think some asian girls look pretty in Blonde hair. And this do not work the other way around, which means, no so many really blonde people look good in black hair. Asians dye their hair to all kinds of colors. It is more of the product of the asian fashion industry, which, of course, have been influenced by the western element, than a way to become white. Moreover, the Asian fashion industry, if a closer look is taken, has more original asian ideas than borrowed western ideals. There different focuses in the asian fashion industry, being cute, being sexy, being student-like, being professional, being mature, etc. the being sexy part is has more western elements whereas the being cute part seems to be absurd for many western women. well, I welcome your opinions here! By the way, I become there is some generic elements in the stands of being across culture since we are all human. And I really think some claim that "asians are the now standard of beauty.in america." can not be further from the truth for 2 reasons: 1. beauty is subjected to personal preference. Like me, I prefer asian guys over white guys whereas others are the other way around. 2. real pretty asians do not live in america. period. Do you know the title of this book?

I read it a long time ago and now cant remember anything beyond the basic plot... including the title or characters names. It is written in first-person, from the perspective of a girl in China during some dynasty. She is born into a middle-class home, but she is really interested in politics and power. The novel follows her as she grows up. She has like a childhood friend/romantic interest named... Jung? I think it started with J. She sneaks into the Forbidden City a couple times. She meets somebody important and becomes a concubine in the palace. She is the emperors favorite because shes smart and has a unique beauty to her. She winds up becoming Empress. Ugh. It was a good book... I just cant remember the name, and Google isnt helping. I thought it was "Forbidden City" or something along the lines, but I cant remember. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Not Chinese Cinderella or Empress Orchid, although the plot is kind of a combination of the two.

Its a reflective essay final i wrote for English class. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. thank you! :) “Beauty is a simple passion, but, oh my friends, in the end you will dance the fire in iron shoes.” What people see now as the most important quality won’t matter the least later in life. It would be beneficial if people saw the big picture and tried their best to do something that benefits themselves along with others around them. Poetry and music have a lot of impact on people and the way they live their lives. As I read the texts “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and “If Everyone Cared,” I have learned that how people view themselves and the actions they make depend greatly on how others portray them along with what happens around them. Anne Sexton wrote “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” which is told from her perspective of life, instead of the original fairy tale. In the story she illustrates how people depend majorly on looks and appearances and base their actions upon that. In the text she writes “Suddenly one day the mirror replied, Queen, you are full fair, ‘tis true, but Snow White is fairer than you… but now the queen saw brown spots on her hand and four whickers over her lip so she condemned snow white to be hacked to death.” This helped me realize that what others tell people is how they begin to see themselves. If someone tells a girl that she is fat, she will most likely start noticing imperfections on her body. This has happened to me before, but I’ve never realized how words have such a great impact on people. In another part of the text, Anne Sexton writes “Meanwhile Snow White held court, rolling her china-blue doll eyes open and shut and sometime referring to her mirror as women do.” Many people depend on other’s opinions and ways of life; how to look, how to act, what’s right and what’s wrong is often based on what others believe. Women and young teens, especially, often look at models and imagine that is how they are supposed to look, otherwise something is wrong with them. This text inspired me to try to break that pattern and look how I want to look, do what I want to do, and most importantly, be who I want to be, not who others tell me to be. There are many actions people can take to make the world a better place to live in. “If Everyone Cared” by Nickelback talks about being unique and different by not depending on media and others to tell people how they should be. In the text he writes “From underneath the trees, we watch the sky confusing stars for satellites. I never dreamed that you’d be mine, but here we are, we’re here tonight.” There is so much media and technology out there that it is not a surprise why so many people look up to it; it confuses reality with fantasy and causes people to look at all the negative instead of the positive in life. I’ve noticed that many have become dependent on others telling them how to be; they feel that in order to fit in they must keep up with the rest of the world. Nickelback writes “If everyone shared and swallowed their pride then we’d see the day when nobody died.” By this he means, by changing people’s behaviors the world would be a happier place to live in. As I read this text I realized how many people want to fit in and live like everyone around them; I’ve decided that by changing my views on life, others would see how life can be without depending on others and technology, but instead living an individualistic life. By reading “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and “If Everyone Cared,” I have gleaned interest upon how much people base their actions on what others tell them and technology. A person who is told something negative will most likely improve the “flaw” and try to perfect themselves; many look up to others to be just like them, instead of standing out anf being different. As new technologies come out and people get them, others will strive for them until they also have them. If people realized that fitting in with society and others around them is not of great importance, this world would definitely be a better place; People would strive for the good of other instead of just filling their needs and desires.

Surprisingly, When I got to my teen years I somehow morphed into the most unfortunate and stickiest glue that a group of unknowingly cruel teenagers could encounter. Certain conflicts I faced as a once jubilant, charismatic, and lively child now seemed to attach themselves to me in my adolescent days. My school days were filled with peers who always had an opinion and who always had to voice it. Crude remarks would fill my ears daily along with sour faces in disapproval. Everyday, I felt my ego get smaller. My pride was smaller. My dignity, smaller. The only thing that didn’t seem to get smaller is my waist. And my thighs. And we can’t forget my hips. It seemed that I had “Look here!” signs that followed me wherever I went. I constantly found myself in the mirror poking at extra skin and designating areas for improvement. Weekly, I would make a list of tactics that would complete to fix these areas. I didn’t do anything serious like go to the gym because mom refused to by me a gym membership but, I had my fair share of purposely-skipped school lunches. Overall, I was unhappy. I had no close friends. The only friend that I had that was remotely close was the remote and its other friends, the television and the computer. Convinced that I needed to be more active and get off the couch, my mom said I should join my schools drama class. She tried to persuade me that it would be fun. I was not convinced. Then she mentioned that I could possibly make friends. I was sold. I had no one to talk to in school and it want like I could get any lower on the social latter than I already was so… what did I have to loose. I went to the class and everyone was friendly. Everyone was different. From each other and from the people on the other side of the classroom door. The signs that drew attention to me we somehow demolished. Drama was my fantasy world. I could be anything I wanted to be. Once I walked through the doors, I was no longer Courtney. I was the mother. the child. The girl-with-bucket center stage left. The girl who doesn’t have to worry about being accepted by peers. We once did a play that was set in the Renaissance era. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the junior middle school version. The bustling rehearsals soon became an escape from my disappointing reality. This appealed to me, as it was a historical period where real women were idealized. The women of this period did not fret over a few extra pounds or stretch marks. There were lacey corsets and big fluffy gowns. If these women were placed in today’s 21st century, they would probably be considered “fat.” Nowadays, unless I literally starve myself to death, I cant get remotely skinny enough to be ‘attractive’. But back then, the voluptuous curves of a woman in the Renaissance were held on the highest pedestal as true beauty. “God-give bodies”, they were. Accepted, they were. Nothing sealed the amount of assurance I felt in my size once I took my bow at our performance. A hundred faces were all sitting in their seats. Clapping. For my cast members and me. Confucius, one of China’s most famous philosophers said, “everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” If I hadn’t seen it before, I definitely saw it now. Beauty varies. A size two may be most acceptable today but back then, a more voluptuous figure received the same, if not more, appraisal. Trends change all the time. If I tried to starve my self to be stick skinny, by the time I did that, curvy would be in again. The only beauty that exists is inner beauty. That of which, is timeless.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. He created all animals and plants, and sea, and trees, and gardens. He then created the first human being: Adam. Shalmaneser III and Tigleth Pileser III for Assyrian Empire, both white; Darius the Great for Persian Empire, yellow, and eventually Alexander the Great for Greek Empire, also white. The Greek Empire spreaded Hellenistic culture to the world, which marked the beginning of the meet between Eastern culture and Western culture. Renaissance began in Italy, which was a revolution in philosophy, humanity, art, and pretty much everyhing. It was like a light that started shining everywhere to pass the Dark Age. Then came Bacon and Descarted which laid the methodology for science, and the peak was reached by Isaac Newton, thus led to the Science Revolution, which again highly advanced Human History.
