Are fake/ acrylic finger nails tacky, low class and 1997 OR are the passable for being a beauty asset?
I have no time to keep my nails up, and without polish I bite and pick. Thinking about getting short acrylics, but feel a little tacky. What do you think?
Answer: If you want acrylics, go for it! They're a great way to stop biting your nails, you want to keep them super-duper short at first. Depending on the severity of your nail biting you may even want to have them done shorter than your fingertip. They can definitely be a beauty asset!
Be safe when you get acrylics, though. Go to a reputable salon, and ask questions. How do they sanitize the instruments? Do they reuse files? What brand do they use? Some places have unsafe practices so keep your health #1 priority! :)

Has anyone ever regret going to beauty school?
I have a tough decision to make, but I dont know a whole lot about one of my options, which is attending a 1 year beauty school class. If I enjoy it, then Ill be doing more Beauty classes after that. Has anyone out there ever regret going to beauty school? What are the pros & cons you have experienced with this profession?
Thanks, I really appreciate it!
Answer: I attended beauty school right out high school. I am now 20.
Pros:
You have a skill not everyone can do.
You can work under the table.
You can open your own business.
Make as much money as you possibly want (my store manager makes 80k a year because she has a huge clientel).
Cons:
Debt/tuition cost.
If you don't renew your license every 2 years (Washington State) you will have to retake the written and practical test.
Hourly starts at minimum wage and if you can retain a clientel you can make more.

What kind of beauty products and regimens did the middle class women in the 15-16th centuries typically use?
Im way interested in that time period and am simply curious.
Actually, did middle class women even use as many products as the higher classes? I just read that middle class women didnt have the money for such things and would therefore do whatever they can. What were they able to do?
In Europe, sorry, forgot to add Europe.
Answer: Many women of that period would have made their own beauty products, as they made many other items for household use.
Perfume was very popular. Tudor household manuals contain many recipes for perfume, because scent was an expensive luxury containing imported ingredients like spices, and was used as a demonstration of wealth. Women would distill their own perfume, rosewater was a particularly popular scent, as were marjoram and lavender.
White skin was much admired among ladies, Elizabeth I used a preparation for whitening the skin made of egg-whites, powdered egg-shell, alum, borax, poppy seeds and mill water. Cheeks and lips would be reddened with madder, vermillion, or with cochineal, made from ladybirds. Kohl was used to outline the eyes and darken the eyelashes. Middle-class women would probably want to be fashionable as far as they could, and would use these processes as well if they could afford them.
Hair was washed in lye, a mixture of wood-ash and water. A book called Delights for Ladies gives a recipe for 'a delicate washing ball'. Basically, it gives directions for scenting toilet soap or 'castill soap' as the book calls it. Castille soap was expensive, imported toilet soap, made with olive oil rather than the animal fat used in laundry soap. This is the sort of thing a wealthy lady would use for her daily wash. Less wealthy ladies might be satisfied with ordinary soap, made by boiling animal fat up with lye.
There were laws about what kind of clothing people could wear, certain fabrics were supposed to be limited to the upper classes. This was intended to prevent wealthy commoners, like rich merchants etc, from dressing like the upper classes. These laws were often ignored though, so probably the wives of rich merchants for instance would have dressed quite sumptuously. However, most middle-class women would have dressed a lot more simply than the upper-class women, and would not have worn very elaborate clothing.

Why do American parents prefer their 5 yr old girls in beauty pageants over gymnastics class?
Answer: I have no idea, and personally I think it s wrong, it makes little girls look like 20 year old women! Its gross and I personally think there should be an age cap for pageants, like 14, and it should be the child's choice not the parents.
If I ever have a girl I'm going to put her in both ballet and gymnastics and let her choose which she likes best. I'd rather have an athletic child than a child with an ego bigger than the sun!

Anyone ideas for a class presentation on beauty or cultural standards of beauty?
I need to do a presentation on something regarding beauty, focusing more on how different cultures view beauty and I dont want it to be totally boring. It needs to be about 25 minutes long and I need a way to involve the audience so they dont die of boredom!!
Answer: Cultures consider different things to be beautiful in it's own context like the Renaissance women who would pluck their hair in order to have higher foreheads, neck stretching practiced in places like Burma and Thailand, intentional scarring, and you could even bring it into modern context and take apart the constructs of tattooing and its vast popularity and purpose. I think Mac's idea of looking at the past for paintings, sculptures, or simple illustrations would be a very interesting route to take.
I would advise you to take tall of those options into account in their own cultural context, but I think something needs to be said for homogeneity of beauty across cultures. I know you said you want to see "how different cultures view beauty", so this might just be a side note to consider: the beauty of symmetry. I've been very intrigued by the idea that the human perception has come to perceive asymmetries as unnatural. For example, an individual with an apparent physical deformity would be less likely to be considered stereotypically beautiful.
An article to consider - "Symmetry, sexual dimorphism in facial proportions and male facial attractiveness" by I.S. Penton-Voak et al. You can download a pdf. file of the article if you just put the title into google.
Here are two more sites with the same approach to a general view of beauty.
http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/exchange/node/1670
http://www.jyi.org/volumes/volume6/issue6/features/feng.html
The final question I would advise you to consider is the cultural and biological importance of beauty. Like jonmcn49 said, sometimes there are just such innate perceptions of what is beautiful that it's unnatural to think beauty is purely a cultural construction. what does that say about our biology? To give you an idea of what I mean, I refer back to the idea of evolution's primary goal of allowing an individual to have offspring. There have been plenty of studies on mate selection and it seems that reproductive success (how likely this individual is to assist in all things related to offspring survival and development) is one of, if not THE most important factor in selecting a mate. So then, what can we say about the genes of an individual with a genetic deformity (who may be less symmetrical)? How are they perceived by the opposite gender? What implications can we make about that individual's reproductive success? It's always so difficult to talk about these kinds of things in a manner that doesn't offend somebody, so be very careful about the way you phrase things if you chose to work with this idea. Also, I hope I haven't offended anybody by what I've said. It's not my intention to generalize people, their lives, or their misfortunes. I'm just giving insight to a social issue that many people believe may have a biological framework under which it functions.
Of course, the most obvious approach to involving your audience is to pass around a number of photocopies of women and men that could be considered stereotypically attractive and unattractive. If you don't have the means to do so, try projecting images and simply having a show of hands to see how homogeneous beauty is among people. you might want to test this out before you do it in class. In your discussion, talk about the specific individuals in your pictures. I feel that talking about individuals is far more interesting than talking about a general theory.

What annual class do I have to attend to receive the Hair and Beauty License?
I want to obtain a hair and beauty license to receive benefits and discounts. I am aware that there is an annual class of some sort that is required (with an annual fee as well) but have no idea what or where it is.
No Corrie--
I know that there is rigorous training. That is not what I am asking. I am talking about the card to get the discounts just to have access to them. (i.e.- If a family member owns a salon)
Answer: If you live in the US you have to attend Cosmetology School which varies by state of 1200 - 2000 hours @ 35 hours per week full time and will cost $8,000 - $15,000 to attend. You then must take a State written & practical test $150 & up. Then you pay an biannual license fee. Did you think that all there is is a class & you can be licensed? Cosmetologists go through rigorous training they are not just someone who couldn't do anything else so they chose to do hair. There are very talented people out there some making 6 figures (more than you think) and it is quite disrespectful that someone would think they could obtain a license so easy.
Edit: The way you asked the question is not what you now are saying. Actual professional distributors will not sell to you. If you have a family member that is licensed they can get you what you want. I believe you can get a preferred customer card from Sally's which will give you the price in the upper right hand corner.
