The Catcher In The Rye?
Ive read this book a few times...but there is something that is troubling me. The first incident with that book was with John Lennons assassin Mark David Chapman, and then John F Kennedys assassin. And one more. What does this book have to do with assassination. I dont get it. Ive read the book three times. But I still dont get it.
Answer: I think what you're trying say is that some of the (not so) popular readers of this novel were the assasins of John Lennon and JFK. The reputation for this novel is that those who read it were mentally disturbed or something, just like the main character - Holden Caulfield. But there's really no reason to doubt your mental condition if you enjoyed reading this novel. It's a good read. I enjoyed reading it, I can even relate to some of Caulfield's thoughts and sentiments. (But believe me, I'm not planning on assasinating anyone, hehehe).

New Literature Shows Substance is Defining Issue of Our ...
In 1980, Mark David Chapman told police that Catcher in the Rye led him to assassinate John Lennon. Who would protest for the author of The Gossip Girl series? What author would we wear armbands for? Which novel in ...
So Sarah Palin is "Responsible" for the shooting in Tucson, AZ? OK... So why hasnt Jody Foster been arrested?
If it were not for Jody Foster and her films, President Ronald Reagan wouldnt have been shot at and those people injured. Why do we allow her OBVIOUSLY evil films to be aired? Why hasnt she been arrested for her "Roll" in the assassination attempt?
John Lennon was killed by a nut-job that was "Told" to do it by reading The Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger. Mr. Salinger didnt die until January 27, 2010... Why did he die at home and not in prison for conspiring to murder John Lennon? Why is his HIGHLY DANGEROUS BOOK still in print? Cant someone think of the children?
Ive seen many many maps of hiking trails and national parks that have "Targets" over where the major sights and stops are... Im sure that many people have been injured or even killed under those evil evil "Target Symbols". HOW CAN WE NOT BAN ALL USEAGE OF TARGET SYMBOLS!!??!!
Why is the retail chain Target still open!?!?!? There must be deaths and injuries CONSTANTLY as people take their "Target Logo" seriously and just start shooting! In fact, I was at a coffee shop next door to a Target in Phoenix, AZ when a guy I graduated high school with SHOT A FRIEND because he was mentally ill and involved in some sort of Gang Activity. Since you could see the Target Logo from the Hollywood Video kitty-corner to the massive Target Store, it was OBVIOUSLY the reason he shot his friend!! Right?
Dont get me wrong... I despise Sarah Palin and her little whore daughter but COME FU*KING ON! How on earth is it ANYONES fault but the PARENTS of the nut-job that didnt get their son mental health treatment?
How stupid and just empty headed must you be to think that the shooting was the result of anyone but the shooter and the voices in his head talking about "The government controls your mind by controlling grammar."
Answer: I cannot say anything about Jody Foster and her film, I do not know which one you refer to and possibly have not seen it. Was she the actress and following the script and directors instructions or did she write the film? That would tend to make a difference compared to a public political figure who has made references to use of the second amendment to take back (basically overthrow which constitutes treason) the control from the government.
I have seen many maps across the US and Europe with markings of major sites and stops. They are marked with an "X" on those I have seen. This is different than a rifle scope cross-hair marking. This is again different from a target symbol.Even in common use language;
A target is commonly seen as a goal or aiming point such as on a dart board but not commonly for living things. You may say a target for dropping a bomb from an airplane but that is not a common activity for most people.
"X" marks the spot.
The cross-hairs are symbols of what one shoots at.
Are you going to include all the actors, directors and scriptwriters of films like the various 'James Bond" style that have the cross-hairs as a point of aim to shoot at.
The cross-hairs has been understood by the current and past generations as a hunter, sniper and anyone with some basic intelligence as a symbol of aim and shoot to kill. Not only did Palin have this on her sites but she also had the names of the ones that she claimed needed to be gotten rid of posted. Add this to her speeches of second amendment use and taking back the power by the people away from the government and you have a very good case against her.
It does not matter if she would have direct or personal contact with a particular person. Look at how the terrorists communicate. The leadership calls for something, puts an emotional tone to it and directs in which method it may be carried out.
I have been in and am in a leadership position.
I am often opposed to military and political mentalities but being in such a position I need to be responsible for my words and actions. I believe that I should also be held accountable for them.
Friendly fire is NOT friendly.
Palin has chosen to be in a leadership position and speak out in ways that go beyond responsible and should be held accountable. The "Tea Party" has gone so far as to attempt to use this incident for their own fund raising. This is comparable to terrorist methods of gaining support from radicals.
You may be lucky enough to have never had to deal with terrorism and the way they operate so I can understand your viewpoint. I came to understand it since the early 1980's after the military sent me to a place that was named on a list as one of several targets that they were considering to attack. I have learned to walk among them unnoticed being that I lived in the immediate vicinity to them. Over time the methodology has evolved and I have remained abreast of the developments and mentality to include threats that are current. You may consider it extreme but from all indications, the "Tea Party" and Sarah Palin are very close to having the same mentality. This group has the potential to spawn a new breed of home grown terrorist unless people do hold those in positions of leadership accountable and responsible for the repercussions that occur due to their activities.
We have some of the finest military members in the world defending our rights to be outspoken and take actions to change that which we do not personally agree with. This is done through set procedures and not through the call for violence. If anyone desires such methods to overthrow a system of government there are plenty of third world nations that are more suited to this where they may actually be effective in establishing a better life for the people. Our system is not perfect but we do have a process that should be followed by those who choose to remain in the US. Anyone opposed is free to leave, notice that is not a freedom given under some other governments.
Your last comment directly links his warped position to Palin with the opposition to the government and even if indirectly is reinforced by her insinuated methods.
She chose to be in a responsible position and should be held accountable for her actions.
Edit: Note that he is responsible for his actions, not Palin. Where Palin may have some connection in his mind is that her actions and comments may have given him permission to act out on his ideas. Her irresponsible methods can be interpreted as giving credibility and approval for someone who would possibly not act out on their aggressions.
I would hesitate to state he is crazy or insane, that would mean he is not able to be held mentally responsible (in this case Palin may as well given him the weapon, ammunition and told him the objective) but his prior actions do show the ability to comprehend his actions and be held accountable.

Rationale behind John Lennons death?
Does any one know what exactly was the rationale behind saying the the Catcher in the Rye was responsible for the assassination of John Lennon?
I did not mean it was responsible, actually. I just meant was was his rationale in thinking it was responsible. Sorry for the confusion. I am a fan of the novel and I could not understand how he could use that as his reasoning behind killing him. But, thank you. That answered my question.
Answer: Well, first of all, the assassin had schizophrenia, which is the main reason he murdered John Lennon. He read Catcher in the Rye and strongly identified with the main character (Holden Caulfield), especially his take on "phony" people. Now, a normal (healthy) person would read the book and think "wow, Holden was right" and leave it at that. But being mentally unstable, he became obsessed with it, and got it into his head to kill John Lennon, because (according to him) Lennon was a huge phony. (He had actually been a fan of the Beatles and John Lennon, but apparently Lennon had "sold out" or something.) In the days leading up to the assassination, he actually re-enacted scenes from the book. After killing John Lennon, the idiot sat on the sidewalk reading Catcher in the Rye. He wrote on the inside "I am Holden Caulfield."
So yes, there was definitely a connection between Catcher in the Rye and the murder, but you could hardly say that the book was responsible.

Does Catcher in the Rye deserve a bad rap?
I just got finished testing over the book The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.
First of all, I thoroughly loved the book. I felt like I could relate so well to the main character, Holden Caufield. To me, I felt like I was reliving the past two or so years of my life (Im 17).
But my English teacher was also sure to warn us that the book had a history of being banned. I was also surprised to learn that the book had inspired TWO assassination attempts. (The man who shot John Lennon was found carrying the book, and the guy who tried to kill Reagan was obsessed with the book.)
I guess my question is- does this book deserve to be overly praised or condemned? Or is it simply a timeless tale of the struggles of growing up?
I know Holden wasnt the most reliable narrator, but I loved him and sympathized with him all the same.
My English teacher told me the real reasoning behind banning the book was not the language or the sex but that it inspired rebellion against authority.
Answer: No, that book is amazing...amazing. What did Hitler read? Censorship is for idiots.

why are there attempted murders tied to the book the Catcher in the Rye?
wikipedia says this
Mark David Chapmans shooting of John Lennon, John Hinckley, Jr.s assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan, Robert John Bardos shooting of Rebecca Schaeffer and other murders have also been associated with the novel.[36][37]
Answer: First, here's the deal with the John Lennon/you-know-who/Catcher in the Rye:
First, you gotta understand that the guy had schizophrenia; he was not mentally stable, nor was he able to think like a healthy person. That being said, he read Catcher in the Rye and strongly identified with the main character (Holden Caulfield), especially his take on "phony" people. Now, a normal (healthy) person would read the book and think "wow, Holden was right" and leave it at that. But being mentally unstable, MDC became obsessed with it, and got it into his head to kill John Lennon, because (according to him) Lennon was a huge phony. (He had actually been a fan of the Beatles and John Lennon, but apparently Lennon had "sold out" or something.) In the days leading up to the assassination, MDC actually re-enacted scenes from the book. After killing John Lennon, the idiot sat on the sidewalk reading Catcher in the Rye. He wrote on the inside "I am Holden Caulfield."
With John Hinckley, Jr., there was probably little or no connection between Catcher in the Rye and the assassination attempt. Police found a copy of the book in his hotel room, along with several other books. He had an obsession with Jodie Foster after seeing her movie Taxi Driver (15 times!). He seemed to identify strongly with Travis Bickle (main character), much like MDC identified with Holden Caulfield. He stalked Jodie Foster for several years, then eventually turned his attention to Jimmy Carter and eventually Ronald Reagan. In Taxi Driver, Travis Bickle tried to murder the president; that most likely served as inspiration for Hinckley. Actually, his story was remarkably similar to MDC's, but his object of obsession/inspiration was different. (And like MDC, he was declared insane.)
Robert John Bardo was carrying a copy of Catcher in the Rye when he murdered Rebecca Schaeffer, but again, the connection is unclear. He had been obsessed with Schaeffer for about 3 years. In the late 80s, he was furious after seeing her in bed with a guy in one of her films. In his mind, that was apparently enough reason to murder her. Needless to say, he too was not exactly in perfect mental health. Again, it was a pretty similar story- psychotic guy with an unusual celebrity fixation gets mad at said celebrity for something and decides to kill him/her. But in his case, there was apparently no obsession with a fictional character (unless you count Rebecca Schaeffer's character.)
To make a very long story short, MDC was a deranged man who used Catcher in the Rye as an assassination manifesto. (Kinda like when Charles Manson claimed that he found "instructions" in the Beatles songs to commit murder.) Hinckley was a deranged man who used a movie character as an assassination manifesto and just happened to have Catcher in the Rye in his room. Bardo was a deranged man who used his own obsession as reason for murder and (apparently) just happened to have a copy of Catcher in the Rye with him that night.

What does Lennons death have to do with the catcher in the rye?
Apparently John Hinkley, who attempted an assassination of Ronald Reagan in 1981, and Mark David hapmean, who murdered John Lennon in 1980, both brought The Catcher in the rye into spotlight. Hinkley told the court that his defense could be found in the novels pages, while chapman had asked lennon to sign his copy of the book earlier in the same day he killed him. Does anyone know anything about these instances.... like how the novel was involved?
Answer: They were both unstable, unbalanced men who identified with the character of Holden for all the wrong reasons.
I'm not so sure about Hinkley's ideas about the book so i will focus on Chapman (a very disturbed man who thought that tiny little people lived inside his head)
He had disliked Lennon since the late 1960's when he was a very devout Christian and Lennon had made the comment about The Beatles being "Bigger than Jesus".
Later on, he read The Catcher in the Rye and somehow got the message that phony people deserved to die. And he considered John Lennon to be a huge phony (i Believe that he thought that Lennon being a millionare contradicted his "message" of peace and love and "no possessions") so he went to New York (near the time of year that the book was set), stayed in a cheap hotel (like Holden), and picked up a hooker wearing a green dress (like Sunny)
He and i must have read very different books or he seemed to have missed the (major) part about Holden wanting to keep children innocent and the fact that the root of Holden's problems were caused by a tragic death at a young age...he stood outside of John Lennon's apartment building all day and Spoke to John's 5 year old son, Sean, when walked inside with his nanny. Knowing that he was going to kill Sean's father later that day.
Although Holden does mention killing other people once or twice (the thing about the "people shooting hat", etc) he had more suicidal talk than anything. I guess Chapman missed that point too.
