What is a good bigography of Marie Antoinette?
Can you give me a name and an author of the Marie Antoinette biography that you think is most truthful?
And is there a website or link that can give me information about French history? I am interested in this sort of thing. Thanks.
Answer: 'Marie Antoinette: The Journey' by Antonia Fraser is the best one I've read so far. It's entertaining yet very informative.
Another good one is 'The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette' by Carolly Erickson. It's a "historical entertainment" novel written in diary form, yet it still gives a good background on her life.
While I haven't read it myself, I've heard that 'Abundance: A Novel of Marie Antoinette' by Sena Jeter Naslund is good as well.
Hope this helps!

What effect did Marie Antoinette have on the people of today?
Im doing a history fair project on Marie Antoinette and I need to know if she has an effect on the people of today and what it is. Help?
Answer: None.
She simply became the focus of hate from an already
unhappy group of starving peasants in France in the 1790's.
Marie Antoinette & the French Royalty were actually
victims of bad weather and poor crop management.

How to make a marie antoinette tricorn hat?
I really need help. I want to make a marie Antoinette style tricorn hat to go with my costume. But Im not sure how. Any how-tos? Or instructions?
Answer: The tricorn hat is just a plain broad-brimmed hat with the brim bent up to the crown. If you can get such a hat in felt, just tinker at bending the brim - first try three equilateral bends; then try folding up the back with two smaller left-front and right-front folds; until you get an effect you like. You can fix the hat either with felt stiffener or simply by stitching the brim to the crown.
If you can't get or can't afford a real felt hat, cut out a big circle of black card or cartridge paper to experiment with the "cocking" of the hat brim. Once you have got it the way you want it, at a pinch you can make a crown with a piece of black fabric.
An 18th-century tricorn hat would have had a cockade over the left eye, made out of a piece of ribbon pleated tightly into a circle - that's easily done. There might be a gilt button or (for a lady) a brooch right in the middle of the cockade, and for a lady there might be a plume of ostrich feathers fixed behind it.

What effect did the media have on Marie Antoinette?
I want to know how the French press tarnished Marie Antoinettes reputation, leading to the French revolution. Some examples from her life/history would be nice.
Answer: The most important thing to consider about the French press in the 18th century is that, unlike today where we can access information instantaneously, communication was significantly slower in Marie Antoinette's day. So, once something was put out into public, whether it was true or not, it was almost impossible to retract/amend.
The most damaging publications for Marie Antoinette were the infamous "libelles," which were the 18th century equivalents of political cartoons. As her reign continued, the libelles became increasingly more vile and vindictive, often portraying Marie as a lesbian, involved in orgies, and a molester - among other things. And since Marie couldn't just hop on the television and give a press speech, the libelles were free to paint her as whatever kind of Queen they wanted her to be.
As the people of France became increasingly more dissatisfied with the monarchy and particularly their perception of the Queen, Marie Antoinette did commission several portraits of herself along side her children in an attempt to show her more mature, motherly nature as opposed to the (commonly exaggerated) extravagance of her youth. But as we know, these portraits were to no avail; she was still beheaded for being a person she was not.
The power of the French press during Marie's time shouldn't be underestimated, because even today, many of the attitudes and beliefs propagated by the libelles persist. The famous line, "Let them eat cake" for example; Antoinette never uttered those words and in fact they have been attributed to numerous Queen's throughout history.
Marie Antoinette only had a reputation because of the French press and it had always been rather unbecoming. Even upon her arrival from Austria at 14, she was immediately labeled "The Austrian" and mocked. Ultimately, she was a victim of gossip - spread by the French press.

How accurate are the costumes and characters in the new movie Marie Antoinette?
How accurate are the costumes, specifically the "Court uniform" worn by the Dauphin and the King?
Also, are all of the characters you see or at least see more than once based on members of the Royal Family and other known people? Did the producers/script writers have particular personages in mind when they show them in the movie like this? (the chatty women who are always talking about people and were standing in the woods and complaining when Marie Antoinette first came to France, the people at the dining table with the gossip going on when Marie first inquired who the Kings mistress was in the movie, and various other characters). I know the mistress is based off real, and the main characters that are "named", but I was wondering about the unnamed ones that are always around.
Also, did the Dauphine and Dauphina really have as an elaborate of levée as shown in the beginning of the movie BEFORE Marie Antoinette became Queen, or was this supposed to depict a Queens levée.
I also wondered who at the Opera was the arabic dressed old man, he was white and French but had on a turban wrapped around of some kind in an exotic fashion.
Also, speaking of exotic, who was the little African boy dressed in Arabic/turban dress that was behind the Kings Mistress Madame du Barry when she was walking through the hall of mirrors? Is he just a page? Is this typical uniform of such a servant (Its almost Mameluke like during Napoleons reign his Mamelukes) or just Madame du Barrys colorfulness?
WONDERFUL ANSWER Down there Cc, just wondering if any one has anything else to add but doubtful.
Answer: The costumes in the film are not actually that accurate. They are all very brightly coloured, this gave the lavish image that the film maker desired, however in truth ,arie Antoinette would have worn more deep and majestic colours like red and blue. As for the clothes of the Dauphin and louis XV their costumes were fairly accurate.
Most of the characters are based on real people. The two chatty women who were in the woods when Marie Antoinette first arrived were Madame Victoire, and Madame Adelaide, the were the daughters of Louis XV who never married and lived at versailles all their days as spinsters until the revolution, they were know as Les Mesdames Tantes, as they were the aunts of Louis XVI. At the dinner table when Marie Antoinette says who is she, in reference to the kings mistress Madame du Barry it is the Comtesse du Noilles who first answers her, this countess was the mistress of the houshold to Marie Antoinette. Then her brother in law the Compte d'Artois elaborates who du Barry is for her. He is the younger brother of Louis XVI and many years after the revolution would become King Charles X. Louis XVI's middle brother the Compte du Provence also features throughout the film, it is his wife who give birth to a new prince before Marie Antoinette does. Count Axel von Fersen was very close to Marie Antoinette, it is not clear if she had an affair with him, but the biography on which the film is based says she did, so that is why it is added. The wig maker, or hairdresser Mr leonard was a true character also, he almost certainly did not go around in pink stockings as is shown in the film.
As for the numerous extras they are most probably based on real people because the film was very well researched, but there were vast numbers of people living at Versailles so these actors could be representing any number of them.
You are right that the Queens levee would be more elaborate, but Louis XV was widowed by the time Marie Antoinette so as Dauphine she was the first lady of Versailles from the moment she arrived and she would have had an elaborate levee, one thing you may have noted is that her bedroom does not change after she becomes queen, this bedroom is the one she would have slept in as queen, but she had an apartment on the floor below when she was Dauphine, so this is not the correct location for these first levee's.

What colors relate to marie antoinette?
I need to make a poster on marie Antoinette and the colors are supposed to relate to her. What colors might work? Any ideas?
Answer: Marie Antoinette had fair hair, the typical Hapsburg pouty mouth, round cheeks, a long nose, wide blue eyes, and curved eyebrows. going by that description of her, she would have pastel shades to flatter the fair hair and blue eyes, any blue colour would bring the colour of her eyes out. perhaps the background could be something floral, spring scene or summer scene. i hope that sets off your ideas for you. good luck with the poster.

How did the Vast Wealth of Versaille King Louis XVI & Mario Antoinette lead to the French Revolution?
Were the peasants justified in storming Bastille? Did Marie Antoinette & Louis XVI deserve to die? I need as much detail as possible.
Answer: The French Revolution occurred because Mario burned the baguettes and substituted cake, or something like that. Louis XVI got caught in the line of fire when the lone gunman, who everyone thought was a wonderful guy until he stopped taking his medication, opened fire at Le Cordon Bleu culinary school. In response, peasants stormed the Bastille Opera House demanding to know what had become of the prison.
Beyond that, you'll have to do your course's required reading.

What to you think Marie Antoinette would think of 20th and 21st century fashion?
I know Marie Antoinette was a big fan of fashion and hairstyles etc. So I started thinking what she would think of 20th and 21st century fashion, I know obviously we cant know exactly what she would think of it but I just wanted the opinions of people who know her personality well =) What decade do you think would have been her favourite for fashion? Do you think there would be any fashion icon she would be a fan of? Thanks!
- Chris
Answer: Marie's biggest problem with today's world would be too many peasants can afford somewhat stylish clothes. Sure, there are the super rich in their super rich clothes, but still to a great extent there is not the huge divide between the classes, and the top fashion designers are often ripped off and cheaper clothing lines imitate the top ones.
I don't think she'd like that, she lived to rule over the peasants (and died from it, too)
She probably would have liked whatever era it was when women wore big hats, maybe shoulder pads. She'd be very unhappy in the late 60's when the hippies ruled fashion. She would have maybe liked the glamor days of the 30's or 40's, even though it was all fake in movies, because most people were poor from the depression or limited in what they could buy during the war.
