how in the hell is USC not in the top 100 in world university rankings?
In QS Top Universities, USC did not make the top 100... that is all fine with me, but get this --- schools like UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, and UC Davis were all ranked higher than USC!! Further discrepancies loom in the rankings as they placed UCLA as #30 and the much superior UC Berkeley at #36 (in the US News Rankings UCLA and USC are ranked almost identically with Berkeley having a significant lead on both of them). As a USC student, my problem with the rankings is less that USC is not in the top 100, but more so that USC is placed lower than mediocre schools like UCSB, Purdue, UW, UCSD, and UCD. Who here agrees with me that this ranking (which is almost universally considered as the international standard) needs some serious reevaluation?
http://www.topuniversities.com/university_rankings/results/2008/overall_rankings/top_100_universities/
Answer: I was surprised to see the same thing. I would definitely say USC and UCLA are comparable academically, but we're being left out of a lot of rankings. I think our reputation for being stuck up and rich attracts a lot of the wrong kind of person. USC has a lot of exceptionally talented students but they're overlooked because there are also many that are less than spectacular.

University rankings, and hypes of each university?
Okay, so a lot of people go off to university these days, its like an automatic step in peoples lives, but what do you think of the hype surrounding certain universities? Do you think its unfair that the like of Cambridge or Oxford or Harvard have the best reputation, and compared to the likes of UCL which has a higher standard than Oxford according to QS world rankings, and is one of the best universities. Do you think it would be and different if someone achieved a first from Cambridge to someone who achieved a first in another university??
Just curious to what everyone thinks.....
Answer: I have worked in universities for over 25 years and I have a postgraduate degree from one of the universities you mention (Oxford) so, I have a little experience of the world of higher education.
Harvard is the best university in the world, alongside MIT. Oxford and Cambridge rank very close to them.
The point that lies within your argument, but is not fully expressed, is the 'brand mark' of these universities. Eyebrows do not raise when one says 'I attended UCL'. However, they do when one says 'Harvard', or 'MIT' or Oxbridge. No amount of updated, cutting edge courses nor Nobel Laureate faculty at other places will ever replace the cache the aforementioned universities have.

Deciding on Graduate School?
I have been accepted to my two top choice graduate schools, which are Kings College London and Tel Aviv University. I want to have a career one day with the FBI or Foreign Service but I am not sure which would help me more. Here are some of the details of each
Kings College London
Ranked 21st in the world according to Qs world university rankings; great reputation
Has many languages that I can study (Including Arabic, Farsi, Chinese, Russian, Urdu), though it is up to me to make sure it fits in my schedule
My concentration will be Intelligence and International Security
Tel Aviv University
Ranked 138 in Qs world university rankings
Is located in a conflict hot spot, which can give me an up close perspective of the region
Has only two languages I can study (Arabic and Hebrew, Arabic my preference) but I can know it would be able to fit in my schedule and it may be more intensive than the language study at Kings
Some people have told me that either would be great; one of my friends has said to go to Tel Aviv because it would give me a good background for counterterrorism, something I would like to do but do not limit myself to. Another friend told me I should go to Kings because of the reputation and that it would improve my chances of getting a job with the FBI, Foreign Service, or something else of that nature.
I wanted to see if anyone here could give me an opinion as well
Thank you
Answer: I will make an educated guess that the program at Tel Aviv will be more "hands on,
which may or may not be an advantage.
However, Tel Aviv University is not nearly the most highly regarded university in Israel. Also, unfortunately, there is some anti-Israel bias among many officials of the FBI and the State Department.
Unless a person knows some Arabic already, it is virtually impossible to learn it well enough in grad school to meet FBI or State Department language standards. You will probably have very little opportunity to practice Arabic outside of the university in Tel Aviv.
There is also the issue of studying in Israel if you do not already know Hebrew, even if English is the language of instruction for the university classes. Unless your program has a majority of international students who do not know Hebrew, you may find yourself at a social disadvantage.
You should also look into what you will need to do to have your degree from either of these international universities accepted in the United States and whether your proposed degree is favored by the agencies for which you would like to work.

Is there any point of a university ranking...?
I just recently got accepted by University College London (UCL) for Civil Engineering. I was wondering that according to QS UCL is the 4th best university in the world. I got extremely happy about it once I saw it on QS website, but now I am wondering if there is any point of this or not?
1. Does this ranking mean anything?
2. What is the point of a university ranking system?
3. What are these rankings based on?
4. Is it gonna make a difference if I join UCL or another uni lets say Middlesex, which according to TimesOnline does not have a great ranking
5. If Ranking is not true, what shall I look for in order to find a perfect university?
Answering even 1 question would be great help. Please try to answer as many as you can. Thanks in advanceac
Answer: I'm not in the UK, so I can't answer the questions from a British perspective, but I imagine many of the concepts are the same in the UK as the US.
1. Does this ranking mean anything?
Usually not. Employers want to hire people who solve problems for them. If you went to Hull and can do the work, I'll hire you. If you went to Oxbridge, and you can't, I don't care.
2. What is the point of a university ranking system?
Universities (and schools) love to be able to point to things that show that they are different, and that my school is better than the other one. In the US, the rankings are not "official", they are just put out by people who want to put out rankings.
3. What are these rankings based on?
It varies widely. Usually some mix of:
how successful graduates are (which means it shows whether the school was good in the past)
how well-regarded the school is by other academics (which shows it was good when the perception was formed)
how difficult it is to get in (which shows that lots of people want to go there, not that it is good)
how many new graduates get jobs in a reasonable amount of time
how much money alumni donate to the school
how much research is done at the school
how good the faculty is (and it is a LOT harder to judge good teaching, than something that doesn't show teaching at all -- like how many research articles are published)
4. Is it gonna make a difference if I join UCL or another uni let's say Middlesex, which according to TimesOnline does not have a great ranking
Maybe, it is hard to tell. If the schools both teach you what you need to know, and you apply yourself and study and learn what you need to know, then no. Well, maybe going to a prestigious school might help in that first job after school, but after that, the different almost completely disappears. It also doesn't hurt to be surrounded by other students who are also going to be successful, because you will push each other (and then also you will be developing a better professional network).
5. If Ranking is not true, what shall I look for in order to find a perfect university?
Don't bother looking for the perfect university, it doesn't exist.
Try to find a place where you will learn what you need to know, at a price that you can afford. Try to find some professors in your field that you would like to work with, and talk to them, and set yourself up for a good experience.
But a motivated student, who finds the good teachers at the okay school, studies hard, and makes opportunities for themselves can get a better education at an okay school than the person who gets into the well-regarded school, but then just floats through.

How much the university rankings should be trusted when you are comparing US with Australian Universities?
First lets say I am in field of engineering and technology (biomedical).
I will not be qualified for MIT, Berkley or Imperial college or similars, so please do not waste your time think about these.
There are different rankings offered in different sites, QS times, US news , etc.
although there are some differences but there are always some universities with their nearly the same numbers in ranking.
for example melbourne and new south wales are always among tops in engineering in aus.
but i often hear that even a university with 100th ranking in US for example is better than a 50th ranking non-US university in world prestige and reputation as well as in academic and research excellence.
How much should that be trusted? what is your idea? is there any source other than these rankings?
P.S: we should not forget that PhD in US has needs some courses in addition to thesis but in Aus its just research (no course anymore :P).
Thank you.
Answer: The sort of rankings to which you refer are not too valuable in making international comparisons, as you seem to know. However, sometimes, the 100th ranking US university has a better program in a given field than the the 75th ranking one outside the US, for example
For doctoral work, it is much better to rely on opinions of the professors at your undergraduate university and also to do a search of currently published peer reviewed articles in your field to see where the most relevant research is being done. Rankings are based on arbitrary mathematical formulae of which some aspects have nothing to do with the quality of the program.
Undergraduate education varies so much from country to country that rankings are useful for only the very top universities, such as "Oxbridge", the Ivies, les Grandes Ecoles, Monash, etc.

University rankings - QS or THE?
I took a look at the QS and THE (Times Higher Education) world university rankings to decide where to apply.
The ranking difference of the school I want to apply to, in the 2 rankings, is 100.
Which one is reliable? QS or THE?
Answer: Silly way to decide. Any regionally accredited school is the best; as they can help you get where you'd like.

Information about Mc.Gill U?
I know schools look for more than just one thing, so I am wondering what the average American student needs to get into McGill U in Canada.
Ive been looking at a few schools and this one has been on my list for a while, I want to learn more about it so that I can know what goals I need to make to get in.
What do I need for SATs? What about ACTs? How many subject tests (and min. scores)? Class rank? GPA (do they care more about weighted or unweighted)?
I heard that Mc.Gill is more into numbers than the activities. So do you think the following would be of less importance?:
Extra curricular activities (volunteer hours)? Class Curriculum? Work or out-of-school experiences? Essays? Recommendations?
Please give me any information about each of those topics I mentioned. I came to Yahoo answers to get more in depth information then what might be found online, so anything extra you can tell me would be great! :)
I heard Mc.Gill was one of the top Canadian school "Its undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools consistently ranks the top university in national rankings such as those published by Macleans, and among the top 50 universities in regional and worldwide rankings, including the Times Higher Education (THE) - Qs world university rankings and Shanghai Jiao Tong Universitys Academic Ranking of World Universities." So I was surprised when I found out that the "Percent applicants admitted is 54%". This is because top American Ivy league schools have a 7% -19% applicants admitted, so I was expecting Mc.gill to have the same low percentage. Why is that?
Thank you for your time, I sincerely appreciate it!
Answer: http://www.mcgill.ca/applying/undergrad2010-11/usa/
That's the best I can do for you.
Canada doesn't have an set of elite universities like the US does. McGill isn't part of some exclusive upper echelon, it's a regular university that ranks well against other regular universities. Since the exclusivity variable is omitted, it makes more sense to enroll as many qualified applicants as possible.

Will my choice of university impact my chances of doing my Masters at a better university?
Specifically, Im going to study Computer Science at the University of Edinburgh, which is something like on the 50th place in the world at Computer Science (in the Times Higher Education-Qs world university rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities). Will the fact that the ranking is not that high (compared to, say, Cambridge, which is a lot higher in the rankings) significantly impact my chances of doing my Masters at a higher ranked university, such as MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, Caltech, or even Cambridge?
Answer: Edinburgh is an excellent school - much more prestigious than you apparently think.
You only mentioned "name" schools - very competitive programs and very difficult to get into.
Here is an idea - USNews.com has a "rankings" area. Invest USD$15 and get the premium service for graduate schools. Enter your personal information [I guess you'll take the GRE], grades, etc. and see which graduate schools are likely to accept you. Apply to at least three of those schools.
Did you know that one of the finest CS grad schools in the world is University of Texas? Not even on your list.
Indiana U is also excellent, as is Purdue and Case Western Reserve.
How about Rutgers?
Broaden your horizons, and by all means appreciate U Edinburgh. It really is a world class institution.

Whats the quality of higher education in INDIA?
The recent QS Rankings of world universities goes as follows:
1.University of Cambridge
2.Harvard
3.Yale
.
.
.
.
47.Peking university
.
187:IIT Bombay
So this is the condition!!! Just 1 university in TOP 200. India started 8 new IITs, 7 new IIMs, 15 new central universities, increased the intake of all central higher institutes by 54% in last 3 years, fund allocation for education Rs 81000 crore (during 11th five year plan); yet the situation remains depressing......WHY IS IT SO???Why isnt the focus on quality???
Views please....
Answer: The criteria taken for the assessment are not known. The situations of learning and imparting knowledge and skills vary across the globe, not just about the resources but basic capacity of the people learning / teaching etc, as well.
One would be astonished with the high performance of students in CET wherefore they had to assign cut off marks at 90 plus, to absorb the contestants into available seats across the territory!
In fact a popular VC told once in a high level meeting that the BCs have already achieved massive seats under merit / general pool and the caste quota was superfluous any more ! The caste factor is played for political purposes only here.
So with all the handicaps of lax facilities in average institutions, political / aristocratic interference in administration (including appointment of less talented teachers) and so forth, still the performance of our youth are of high standards.
The way they fit into various skilled jobs across the globe is testimony enough. It is not just the foreign educated ones who get such jobs. There are many many local geniuses here, who also go abroad for high paid jobs.
We should not feel pulled down by rankings of some body whose choice of criteria, assigning weigtages to them, probable subjectivity of assessment etc may have vitiated the rankings.
The over zealous flash of western medicos about a Delhi bug posing health hazard is a very recent example of stark duplicity of approach. The Indian experts rightly reacted if the AIDS or Avian / Swine flus ever named after the country / city of their first incidence in humans? Why do they want to call it the Delhi thing, particularly at a time when our medical institutions are attracting people across the globe with cheap and best treatment services?
So it would be too naive to overplay the importance of some data generated somewhere and blame our men. Yes many of them are commercial, but so are those in other countries.
Many guys going to Aussie for special courses find that the institutions are no better than the ones in our small towns!
But we should indeed improve our system progressively, not because someone says we are poor, but because we can still do better, with the talents available domestically!

UofToronto or McGill University for Mechanical Engineering?
I have just recently received offers of admission to uofT and McGill University for mechanical engineering. I am goin to make the decision of my life soon and is very difficult as both the unis are top 1 or 2 in Canada and also top in the World rankings for engineering, according to THE-QS.
In making this choice, i am considering everything that covers; Quality of education, Rank, prestige, international reputation of the uni, employment after graduation, employers? Also the location, weather, living conditions, and as I am a Muslim, availability of Halal food too.
Which uni out of the 2 choices is the best pick overall for Mechanical engineering?
And as I am an International student I am also considering costs and fees ($$$$). Although the total costs for both unis are very much similar, are there any financial aid or supports from either unis that can help me ?
Pls provide me with links to useful informations if u can.
Thanks! =]
Answer: I don't know much about McGill, U of T I am very familiar with. It's a very multi-cultural school in a very multi-cultural city. You will have no trouble getting food in Toronto, you can get any type of food there lol. Weather is similar in both places, cold in the winter really hot in the summer. Montreal is a beautiful city but it's helpful if you speak French there, as Quebec is very bilingual. Toronto is well no so French, english pretty much fine unless you plan on living in Chinatown (lol not as much english there, I used to live there). Toronto is also not as nice looking as Montreal, sorry I love Toronto but it's not as beautiful, but the people are nice, not everyone, but in general they are nice. With any city living conditions depend on how much money you are willing to spend. The dorms at U of T are actually ok, for dorms. Cost of living off-campus is very high in both cities.
That's all I can help you with, you have to make the choice yourself.

Okay. I have never done this kind of thing and this is my very first resume & cover letter.
If you want to rephrase any grammer error, misplacement or awkward sentence, you are more than welcome!
But most importantly, since I leave next week, I cant send this to America. It would take weeks.
Anyway I got the Big4s E-mail and career website. But, dont I need to send them a high school diploma or the evidence that I am attending college? Also, typical cover letter includes signature. So should I print->sign->scan->signed cover letter?
Thank you in advance. :)
Answer: Annie,
Under skills delete the first line regarding arithmetic. This is not needed.
I would leave out the web sites for Kaist as well as the description since you haven't yet graduated.

Im planning to do an accountancy undergrad degree, but I cant decide which school is better. Warwick is one of the top 3 for accountancy and finance in uk but nus is ranked higher overall on the QS world rankings, so which should I choose?
Answer: Warwick without doubt.
The rankings are based on lot of criteria and Singapore schools often gets high ranking due to alumni feedback, professor ratings etc. Look at the papers, job offers etc and salary ranges. Singapore schools won't be there. The education system in Singapore is more like you've to read, memorize and use that instead of making you use your brains..
