To what extent do you think that increasing awareness of climate change will impact upon people’s demand for travel and tourism and their behavior as tourists? For example, will long haul destinations such as Australia, New Zealand, China and Taiwan be adversely affected by realization that long haul air travel is potentially a cause of climate change?

If I go to china, will they just speak english to me?
Where is the best city to learn chinese? I mean in terms of language immersion not tourism stuff. I heard in taiwan everyone will try to practise their english with you. Any experiences? Also do you think if i just tell them that i am german and dont speak english that they will buy it?
Answer: Most chinese people that live in the cities can speak English , but if you ask them they will speak to you in Mandarin or whichever language you are wanting to learn, I'm sure they would do it. If you tell them you are German they will probably believe that...it will be funny if they know German and then try to practice with you, and they find out you can't speak it lol.

Dont sexual tourism laws overreach their jurisdiction?
Important note: This question is about JURISDICTION. Im not condoning sex with minors. Jurisdiction is the area with which the power of the law reaches. For example, if a cop from Omaha, Nebraska goes into nearby Council Bluffs, Iowa and sets up a speed trap and tickets speeders, those tickets can be thrown out of court because the officer was not in his jurisdiction, even if both he and the offenders were from his jurisdiction. However, Ive heard that if an American goes to Taiwan or some other country and has sex with an underage prostitute, he can be prosecuted upon his return to the United States under sexual tourism laws. However, isnt the American court prosecuting outside its jurisdiction since the offense occurred in another country? To rightfully prosecute this offender, dont they have to extradite the person back to Taiwan or to whichever country where the offense occurred? Have I misunderstood the concept of jurisdiction?
This question is about how the law works, and is not attempting to justify sexual offenders. Civil responses only, please. Any flaming or rude replies will be reported.
Answer: What is the exact wording of the law?
If it says, for example, "Any United States citizen who goes to a foreign country for the purpose of having sex with a person under the age of 18 years shall be punished by not more than five years in prison," then the mere act of going with that intent, even if he stays in his hotel room and never even sees an underage person, is punishable.

What would you like to know about Taiwan?
Currently writing a website about tourism in Taiwan. I want to know what youd be interested in learning about this small island in the south pacific ocean. Ask any questions you can think that are of interest to you and I will find you the answer!
Answer: You should change "video" to "videos" in the last paragraph of your "only in taiwan" website.
Oh and I'd want to see funny (but not prejudiced) photos and stories. The captions beneath the photos and stories should be really witty and well written. Get to the point fast and don't have too much text. Have more "stuff" and it should be fun stuff that keeps people entertained. You need to think about whether it's going to be a joke (funny) website or a serious independent travel site. Either way you should come across as very curious and insightful and knowledgable about the country, the people and it's culture and show that you have made an effort to get to know and more importantly understand the country.

a tourism commercial for Taiwan showed people sitting on floormats eating, isnt that Japan not Taiwan?
the tv commercial showed the lush green hilly landscape then people sitting low, like on floormats, while someone poured tea. i am chinese so i thought that looked like Japan to me. so Taiwan people sit on floors to eat?
Answer: It's a lot of the world. Taking shoes off when you come in the house is customary in many parts of the world as well, not just Japan.

Can anyone recommend a positioning statement for Taiwan?
Im doing a promotional plan for tourism in Taiwan. I need to come up with a positioning statement though, and I was wondering if you guys could help me out.
Can anyone recommend a positioning statement?
Positioning- A products position is how potential buyers see the product. Positioning is expressed relative to the position of competitors. It has come to mean the process by which marketers try to create an image or identity in the minds of their target market for its product, brand, or organization.
Answer: Your subject is TOURISM IN TAIWAN. If you are looking for something big, already set-up, ready to go, and which has the ability to deal with foreign tourists (with signs in multiple languages, etc.) then I suppose the obvious choice is the National Palace Museum in Taipei. That would be ART. Next would be the National Science Museum in Taichung. That would be SCIENCE. There is also a big museum which opened in the southern end of the island -- Gaoxiong, a year or two back. But sorry I forget the theme of it.

Is tourism good for Guam? Is tourism compatible with military?
Guam is a beautiful, but small island. Only 212 square miles, with a population of 160,000 people including military families. Over 1.2 million visitors, mostly from Japan & Korea. Average visitor stay is only 3 to 4 days since 1970. Visitor spending is about $680 per visit. The people of Guam love and welcome all visitors enthusiastically. But, tourism is barely supporting our businesses. Guam is only 4 to 5 hours from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Manila, Port Moresby, & mainland China.
What should we do? We have very limited resources.
Answer: I think Guam needs to develop their cultural attractions more. I could see something like a Polynesian Cultural Center, but focusing on different cultures from the one in Hawaii (especially the Northern Marianas and a fiesta instead of a luau). Maybe an aquarium to visit? Maybe more access to some of the natural activities? There are some beautiful places such as Tarzan Falls that are almost inaccessible to someone not from the island. Of course in developing some of this, people who call Guam home will be unhappy with the tourists & commercialism. It would be nice if the government would/could put more money into making the island more beautiful - repaving roads, getting rid of graffitti, etc.

If I took international relations at college in Canada would I be able to get a job in Hong kong, or Taiwan?
Remember that college in canada is not university. I would receive a diploma, not a degree.
Also, I am a caucasin male that can speak a decent amount of Mandarin (if that makes a difference)
Would there be a better major to take rather than international relations? Im trying to stay on the business side of things rather than the tourism side
Answer: Without a degree, you can't get a job in hong kong or taiwan. it would be best if you can get a degree.
as to the paid, hong kong pays better, and you would probably ended up in finance industry regardless what you study in college, because that's the easiest job you can get as a white guy there.

How/where to find jobs in Taiwan?
How do you find hospitality/ tourism jobs in Taiwan...with a diploma?
Answer: try your luck at tealit.com
you can also try your luck at 104.com
there may be rules against a non-roc person working in the hospitality industry, but I have seen plenty of russian girls working as entertainers or drink/cigarette girls in various spots. you might want to be careful, i suspect it might be akin to slavery... if you do it illegally.
if you have a diploma in hospitality/tourism your best bet is to go back to school and get a teaching certificate or something that actually has demand and openings, or to come teach english here with the rest of us for a bit to fund that.

What do Western people think about East Asia tourism?
I am doing an assignment for Modern Asia course and the topic is: East Asia tourism (China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan) in Western thinking and imagination.
So I would like to know what you guys (American, European) think about East Asia tourism. Here are some basic questions I would like you to help me answer:
1. Have you ever traveled to any country in East Asia? For business, vacation, or visiting relatives? How long have you stayed there?
2. What are your experiences? About East Asian people, lifestyle, behavior, communication, etc.
3. Before you travel there, what did you expect to see? Is there any element that influences your imagination about East Asia? For example, through media, etc.
4. Would you mind tell me where you come from?
About me, Im a senior student of RMIT International University. Im Vietnamese. I used to live in Singapore and America for total of 6 years. My major is commercial marketing but Im also interested in sociology. I hope to receive as many answers as possible from you guys as it would be very helpful for my assignment and knowledge.
Thanks for your cooperation!
Answer: Question 1.
When I was 16 my family moved to Hong Kong for my dad’s business. I had never been to Asia before. I lived there for three years, during which I visited Burma, Cambodia, Mainland China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Macau, Taiwan, Bali, and Mongolia.
Question 2.
I could honestly go all day on this one. I hope this isn’t too lengthy but I’ll just go down the list with the top 3 if it’s all the same to you.
Hong Kong:
Hong Kong Island is home to a lot of posh residences and has a substantial ex-pat community, especially in an area called the Peak. Its also the place where you see the picturesque skyline of buildings. Because Hong Kong Island was the main development spot for the British, most of the people there speak English well.
The other side of Hong Kong Harbor is Kowloon-side. On this side of town, most are local Cantonese speakers. It is here, however, that you get to go to all of the great food markets and interesting places like Mong Kok.
Hong Kong is actually a very tame place for a foreigner to live/visit in terms of difficulty. It hosts some of the best restaurants in the world, has a couple decent beaches and rock climbing around Shek Oh, and has a very thriving bar district called Lan Kwai Fong.
Mainland China:
The general feeling around Beijing right now must be similar to how the United States was during the early 1950’s. Everyone is going out to make a name for themselves, and the economy is booming. As a Western tourist in China, you will frequently find yourself outnumbered by Chinese tourists from different parts of the country.
The lifestyle seems to vary from city to city, and each has their own reputation. Beijing, apart from being known for its politics and historical monuments, also has a thriving art community. Its most famous art district called 798. Communication in China also varies, but in most cities other than Shanghai and Beijing, it is somewhat difficult to get around without knowing a bit of Chinese.
Mongolia:
Mongolia is a very difficult place for a Western tourist unless you have a good tour group or a good guide. Very few Mongolians, even in the capital of Ulaanbaatar, speak fluent English. Furthermore, Mongolian, though written in the Russian Cyrillic, does not resemble any nearby countries’ languages. It’s closest relative is apparently Finnish of all things.
It is very much a manly-man’s culture, and the national past-times are wrestling, archery, and horseback riding. Foreigners are sometimes challenged to a wrestling match. It is rare for any Westerner to beat a Mongolian wrestler, but I heard that the Westerner becomes a bit of a celebrity if he accomplishes this feat.
The food is better than its reputation gives it credit; almost all meat, dairy, and vegetables, with a strong preference for lamb. A popular dish is lamb’s head served on a plate. Most foreigners go to Mongolia during the NAADAM festival, which is held annually around the beginning of July (just got back from there myself). It hosts a massive opening ceremony and all three of the favorite national sports.
Question 3.
Hong Kong:
I had no idea. My perceptions from Texas were often clashing between the urban skyline I had seen before in pictures, and the old style Chinese architecture I had seen in kung fu movies. The reality was that there were a lot more malls, mountains, and trees than I had imagined.
China: I was more prepared by Hong Kong.
Mongolia: I didn’t know what to expect. The wrestlers were larger than I thought possible, some easily passing 6’8 and the 350 pound mark. The people in Ulaanbaatar were also more prosperous than I had expected.
4.
Texas
Now I am working in Beijing for a culture magazine. You should check it out for more info. It has a section called Fumbling Foreigner that entirely dedicates itself to funny stories about foreigners trying to adapt to the culture shock in China. The link is http://www.theworldofchinese.com/.
As one of their writers, I would be very appreciative if you mentioned our magazine to your teacher and/or fellow students. We are always looking to reach a larger audience around the world.
If you have any other questions feel free to contact me at pcuclis@trinity.edu.
Cheers,
Paul

where can i find free tourism magazines to different countries that will ship them to the u.s?
im wanting to find some free magazines like for travel and things like that, like to Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and etc.
im looking for travel guides that is a magazine.
Answer: Free? I don't know but if you're looking for a subscription, usually those wouldn't ship out from that far away. If you're looking for magazines in general, you can probably find it on Ebay. You can find pretty much everything there

How do you guys know about Taiwan??
Just impressions on his people, governance, tourism, culture, food, products and so on (no matter you really know it)
Btw, some of my friends usually confuse Taiwan with Tailand (at least I wont). What is there famous for or what would you imagine? Guess thats the purpose why I ask this question.
Answer: I'm Taiwanese!
Generally tourists will find Taiwanese people quite hospitable people - even if you do not speak mandarin, you will find that almost everyone will try their best to guide you in english.
I won't go much into political issues here since its a volatile topic. All I will say is that Taiwan is just like any other democratic country, except that the world doesn't want to officially recognised Taiwan as a country simply because they are being pressured and blackmailed by the Chinese communist party.
As a tourist, esp in the capital (Taipei), you will find it pretty easy to navigate and explore. All main road signs have english underneath, including all routes to tourist destinations. In Taipei, the public transport is excellent, esp the MRT. I have provided the link to the tourism board so you can check it out.
Taiwan is a melting pot for all kinds of food from all over the world (though you'd be hard pressed to find traditional African cuisine haha). Ever heard of pearl milk tea? It originated from Taiwan! Food in Taiwan ranges from world-class cuisine to humble traditional fare from night markets. Night markets are the lifeblood of Taiwanese culture - you haven't seen the real Taiwan untill you visit night markets! The best known one is Shih-ling night market in Taipei city. You'll also find an abundance of 24hr convenience stores (mainly 7-11) and karaoke bars.
In terms of exported products, Taiwan is best known for stainless steel and electrical parts and appliances. We're also big on electrical gadgets - comouters, laptops, plasmas, MP4s, mobile phones (ppl change their mobiles about twice every month), the list goes on and on.
I can go on for ages and ages about Taiwan, but if you really want to know what Taiwan is like, come visit us! Just make sure you're with a good tour operator because dodgy companies are out there. If you want to take things in at a more leisurely pace, you can always go without tourguides. You don't need a tour guide in Taipei (providing you have done enough research prior regarding where you want to go and how you're gonna get there). If you want to visit the national parks then booking a tour is probably best as driving could be confusing - even though the signs are in english, the place names can be confusing.
Oh by the way before I forget, Taipei features the current tallest building in the world - the Taipei 101.

Should "Maternity Tourism" Be Legal? Why or why not?
Authorities in San Gabriel, California, shut down a home because of code violations. According to inspectors, the house was literally falling down in areas, and was unsafe to live in. The REAL story lies in what they found at the house when they arrived to shut it down.
Ever heard of "maternity tourists?" It isnt a new phenomena. Simply put, its when pregnant women from nations such as China, Taiwan, and really any third-world country get a tourist visa and visit the US to have bouncing baby US citizens. Its been happening forever, it seems, but now theres a twist.
The house that was shut down in San Gabriel was FULL of pregnant women from China and Taiwan... not to mention newborn babies. Each woman had paid thousands of dollars to come live in this house, have their baby in a US hospital, and then recover in the house. The new part of this is the organized, profit-centered aspect.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42252780/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts
Now heres the rub: nothing about this operation is illegal. At all.
Should organized "maternity tourism" operations be legal? Should pregnant women who give birth while in the US on a tourist Visa, who come here specifically to do that, be rewarded with a tiny US citizen?
Keep in mind, were not talking (right now) about whether or not illegal immigrants who are LIVING in this country and give birth should have US birthright citizenship endowed upon their children
Answer: no wonder social security is shot and the medical stuff. all these people can fly in and hide out once the visa runs out no matter the age. Ice even said it's four million that come in and only two leave and with what have have no way to find them. But don't worry President Obama will figure out what is the best thing to do, he always does that don't you think. See below.
