What are theDCFS qualifications for a teacher in a day care setting?
Im looking to find a job in a day care setting but am wondering about the DCFS qualifications for being a teacher in that kind of setting such as amount of credit hours or schooling. If you know where I can find that info on the net, thatd be GREAT!
Answer: It very much depends on where you live. Each state has different regulations, as do some large cities like New York. You can find the Regulations by doing a web search for "day care regulations in...". As an example, in New York in order to work as an Assistant teacher in a Center you have to have a HS Diploma. Teachers must have a 2 year degree or a CDA and some experience with kids. There are minor exceptions to these rules. Other state may do it differently.

teacher appreciation day is a day to give appreciation to teachers. But the thing is that I like all of my teachers so I dont know, is it okay to show appreciation to more than one teacher on teacher appreciation day?( Like give them something like a gift,a poem,etc. ) I dont want to be unfair, so is it?

I am an undergrad at stony brook university. I am planning on joining the undergraduate teaching program which certifies me to teach upon graduation. But I need to start thinking about grad school. I want to be a teacher and one day a principal. How do i go about this? What do I go to grad school for? What grad schools do i go to?
Since i go to a science school, academic advising was somewhat lost on how to answer this.
Answer: Well, in South Carolina, administrators have to have a Master's in either Administration or Educational Leadership. If their Master's is in something else, then they must have an Educational Specialist degree or a Doctorate in Education.
To be eligible for an admin position, you must have at least 5 years experience in the classroom as a teacher first.

Any inexpensive ideas for teacher appreciation day for 40 teachers?
I am in charge of teacher appreciation day for the month of January for my Student Council. My school has approx 40 teachers/staff that are to be recognized. I need to do something that cost no more than $100. Any ideas? Any websites with ideas would be helpful too, all I could find were ideas for a few teachers and would get to be quite expensive for more than 5 or so teachers.
Answer: This is my 24th year of teaching, and I have received many "gifts" on Teacher Appreciation Day. Here is the only one I remember:
One or two student council members were assigned to each teacher. They wrote a nice, sincere "thank you" note to their teacher. Some even made-up (nice) poems in tribute to the teacher. The students really had a good time with this, and the teachers all felt really special. I remember 2 students coming in to the faculty dining area, and reading a poem to their English teacher, featuring a tribute to her skill in teaching.
I don't know if that's too "corny" for today's students or not. But 15 years later, I still remember that experience.
Hard to beat the price, either!

Giving a gift to a teacher, which day to give?
Ok so my teacher is still coming to class, even though (I have been told this) that Hanukkah begins tomorrow. She teaches tomorrow and Monday, the last day of class. Should I wait to give the gift till class is over to her, of the day starting on Hanukkah. Also, should the gift be wrapped? Its an artwork I made thats been framed already. So, which would be best? I have already done my final speech for her class, but grades have not been submitted yet. So, what should I do? Monday or tomorrow?

Do stores other than staples have teacher appreciation day?
I would like to know if stores other than staples do teacher appreciation day. Staples does a wonderful day that I enjoy going to do my back to school teacher shopping. NOt only do they have great prices for teachers that day, they also give teachers free things and coupons? Does anyone know of any other stores that do this especially in VA.

office max hasnt had theirs yet nor planned it...they are probably having it the weekend of the 8th....so check their website frequently...they usually dont put anything until a couple of days before it. Right now they have penny sales on stuff like crayons, rulers, etc...and they are not doing free laminating this year like they did last year but they are giving 50% off ur laminaying until saturday...they have great laminations...its not skimpy like when you go to the teacher supply places..its thick like cardboard..its worth it!

Answer: I think the best gift would be a hand-made card thanking him for teaching you. If you want to buy him something, I would suggest some type of candy. How many hours does an average teacher work a day?
My girlfriend is a High School Science teacher and I think she works really long hours. Between 10 and 13 per day. She does alot of extra stuff to help kids and other treachers out. Does this seem like a lot or is it average?
Answer: If a teacher is really doing the best job that they can do.. they can expect to work not only the required 8 hour day, but another 2-3 after school...grading, tutoring, contacting parents, researching on effective teaching strategies, creating assignments/assessments, and organizing classroom materials. I have had years where I work over 60 hours a week (and even more at times) when I am creating a new curriculum. It's definitely a life of sacrifice, but I consider it worth it.

I help out in my sons kindergarten class two days out of the week plus i was the room mommy. I had ideas on all the other parties that we did at school but for the teacher appreciation day i have not a clue on what to do. What is a day in the life of an Elementary School Teacher like?
A few months ago I made a career change and decided to become a teacher. I currently teach an after school program. The thing is, this position isnt really letting me know what its like to be an elementary school teacher in the school board. I have many questions:
1. Besides teaching your specific grade, are you also required to do extracurricular activities with children after school? Such as drama club, etc.?
2. Are you required to do fundraising for your school?
3. Are you required to put on events like school plays, etc.?
4. Must part of your day be in the school library or cafeteria for a school period?
5. Are there enough free periods to grade papers and lesson plan while students are at other class periods like gym, art, computers, etc.?
What I really want to know is, besides your actual classes, what else happens or is expected of you as a teacher throughout the day or year?
Answers from teachers in the school board and who teach elementary will be most helpful.
Answer: 1. We are not required to do extracurricular activities, but it certainly provides a sense of fulfillment (and looks good to administration).
2. Teachers are required to allow their students' families to participate in PTO fundraising events. We're generally required to attend fundraising events (like fall festivals) unless we've got a good excuse.
3. We're not required to put on events, but again, it looks good to administration and provides the community a chance to see what's going on in school.
4. That depends on the school. At my school, we're not required to sign our students up for scheduled library time, but a good teacher makes sure students have the opportunity to access library books on a regular basis. I have to take my students to lunch and stay with them during the lunch period. It's only considered a break in that I can eat lunch with other teachers.
5. I have 45 minutes of planning each day. It's never enough. I rarely, if ever, actually plan during this time. It's basically my time to pee, check school email, clean up from the morning, and get ready for the afternoon. SOMETIMES I get a chance to grade papers. This is also the time that various required meetings are scheduled. My actual planning is usually done on Sunday evenings. I plan for the week and make adjustments throughout the week as needed.
I share an assistant with 4 other teachers. I use her during my Reading class. Depending on what grade you teach and where you teach, your assistant situation will differ. The younger grades (K-2) usually have their own assistants or only share with one other teacher. Sometimes the upper grades (5,6) will have to share an assistant, which makes it virtually impossible for them to use the assistant with students. They often just use assistants for clerical work.
Most schools require each teacher to have some sort of duty- monitoring students in the morning before they go to class, assisting with buses in the morning and afternoon, or helping with car riders. At my school we only have this duty once a week, and it generally lasts for 10-15 minutes. We're also all on some sort of committee that usually meets once a month after school. It's not difficult, and it's not too time-consuming, but a lot of times it feels like a waste of time.
The part of my job that I dislike the most would have to be paperwork. It's hard to remember all of the little (but somehow important) things I have to turn in to someone. Being organized is not my strong suit, so without a calendar and constant access to my school email, I'd be screwed.
Overall though, it's really not that bad. If you like working with kids and you like teaching (and in the process learning yourself), then elementary teaching is a great career.
