Whats the difference between different universities?
Hello Im about to choose what college I wanna go to and I got some questions...
Whats the difference from top schools and the average schools? Like between Stanford and http://Www.topuniversities.com/institution/lund-university/wur
Do you learn more from the top schools? If Im not in the top schools will I forever be doomed to just be Mediocre at what I do? Or can I be as good as the people in the more popular schools with hard work? I wanna do research and find out new stuff in what I do and be one of the best.
Answer: I'm not even sure how to start answering you. Part of the answer is perception - there is a public perception that an education from the "top" schools is better. There is some truth to that; some is not true. The main difference is that the "top" schools have better facilities & much better faculty. On the other hand, undergraduates may get much more hands on experience at a slightly "lower" level school. Also, at many universities, regardless of level, undergraduates may have little to do with those upper echelon professors.
One type of school which is looked down on by many people are the really large public universities. Based on my family's experiences, these are often as good, if not better than many of the "top" schools. I'd take an education from Michigan State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, etc., over any Ivy League education any day.
Hard work has an awful lot to do with it, but you still have to be at a school which gives you the opportunity. E.G., I don't care how much hard work you do at local community, even if it's a 4-year institution, you won't get the same education which you'd get at Stanford.
The other critically important things to consider in choosing schools are:
1. Ambience - some excellent schools are in the middle of large cities & don't have the kind of "campus" we associate with most colleges. That is important to some; not to others.
2. You typically don't get your Masters of Ph.D. at the same school where you got your undergrad. Keep your final goal & this thought in mind.
3. Pick an undergrad school which will give you hand on opportunity in your field, has an excellent placement rate in graduate school in your field, & is noted for an undergrad program in your field. E.G. If I wanted a degree in geology, I'd go to the Colorado or New Mexico School of Mines even though they are not on any general list of "top" universities. The people in the field know them.
Good luck & God bless.

how in the hell is USC not in the top 100 in world university rankings?
In QS Top Universities, USC did not make the top 100... that is all fine with me, but get this --- schools like UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, and UC Davis were all ranked higher than USC!! Further discrepancies loom in the rankings as they placed UCLA as #30 and the much superior UC Berkeley at #36 (in the US News Rankings UCLA and USC are ranked almost identically with Berkeley having a significant lead on both of them). As a USC student, my problem with the rankings is less that USC is not in the top 100, but more so that USC is placed lower than mediocre schools like UCSB, Purdue, UW, UCSD, and UCD. Who here agrees with me that this ranking (which is almost universally considered as the international standard) needs some serious reevaluation?
http://Www.topuniversities.com/university_rankings/results/2008/overall_rankings/top_100_universities/
Answer: I was surprised to see the same thing. I would definitely say USC and UCLA are comparable academically, but we're being left out of a lot of rankings. I think our reputation for being stuck up and rich attracts a lot of the wrong kind of person. USC has a lot of exceptionally talented students but they're overlooked because there are also many that are less than spectacular.

Has anyone in your family ever attended an Ivy League institution?
http://Www.topuniversities.com/worlduniversityrankings/results/2008/overall_rankings/fullrankings/
Not that it matters, but the girl who attended Columbia was an African majoring in Psychology
I am somewhat fascinated by intellectuals, academia, etc. Out of the top 200 colleges in the world, almost all of the top 10 are in the U.S.:
Harvard
UC
MIT
Stanford
etc. The reason they rank so high, is because they receive the most funding , so they attract the best from every field. There are really only 2 kinds of students that make it into them--the really smart, and the really rich
I have a roomate who has a sister than attended Columbia [the other Ivy League school Obama attended], and i had to say i was in awe. I am currently a first year college student, so hopefully before i finish id have gotten into one

Does University ranking matter more, or Major ranking more? (Worldwide)?
Hello,
Im wondering. I was just looking at http://Www.topuniversities.com/university_rankings/results/2008/overall_rankings/top_100_universities/
If you click on the university, you can see the majors ranking, eg UC San Diego: 35 Engineering & IT (my major and I got accepted to UCSD).
Do you think when a person looks for a job, the company will look at the world university ranking (say if I go to another country for job) or they will just look at the major ranking to make sure the person they are considering is graduated from a university that has a good specialised program?
Thanks.
Answer: Apart from those first four, it is the major ranking which is important. Universities are very diverse institutions which have strengths in different areas. You want to come out of a strong program not simply a famous university.

1. How big is this news for Filipinos?
2. If youre an alumnus/alumnae/student for these schools...how are you celebrating?
3. Do Filipinos still strive to enter these schools?
4. Did you go to these schools?
5. For foreigners, would you consider entering any of the Big 4?
To some guy : HA?!?=P
Answer: I'm an alumnus of the 2 schools included in the big 4 you mentioned. I finished the first degree and the post graduate degree. Glad to know that Philippine schools are getting the recognition internationally. It wouldn't be hard now to credit the units when applying for schooling and acknowledgment of our profession abroad. This is a requisite to pass the state board for license and eventually practicing the profession.

New Asias top universities are out, how do you think Malaysia fares?
Seems like Universiti Malaya is at no 39, far lower than NUS, even lower than Mahidol University and Chulalongkorn in Thailand. UiTM doesnt even make the list.
http://Www.topuniversities.com/worlduniversityrankings/asianuniversityrankings/asian_university_rankings_top_200_universities/
En Mazlan: really? who?
Answer: Disappointing. Especially to USM, supposingly our "APEX" university, The goverment should really increase funding, and more quality control on both the lecturer and research project in public university.
Get more "LOCALS" into graduate studies and try to get "LOCAL EXPERT" especially from overseas to serve back in Malaysia.

Answer: These are countries and cultures with a long history of valuing education and investing a great deal of money, time, and effort in it over centuries. A culture which, for example, values a girl as brood mare rather than as, say, discoverer of radium, or measures a man in terms of numbers sired rather than number of inventions, is bound to end up with gross overpopulation of impoverished illiterates. You get what you value.

Preferred universities ranking?
When hiring, do companies look at the World University Ranking? http://Www.topuniversities.com/worlduniversityrankings/results/2006/top_200_universities/
Is there a ranking for employer preferred universities?
Answer: Rankings do not matter for jobs. What does matter is if the college you attended is right for the job. Meaning, I'm not going to hire an art teacher who studied art at MIT. Or I rather hire someone who studied Medicine at Johns Hopkins University rather than Brown University.

Dear -----,
I am applying for the *** internship of your company. I understand that your firm is the leading export of Accounting in the United States. I am very interested in developing my skills in this field and would like to work for your company through a summer internship.
I graduated Gyeonggi Buk Science High School which is one of special-purpose public school for students interested in science. I graduated and got accepted to KAIST which is highly competitive university. Even though I putted myself in the scientific field, I was always interested in business field and selected Industrial Engineering as my major. I have just finished my third semester, in the course of which I became deeply interested in Financial Management. I’ve done research about CPAs and I decided to be an accountant. I am preparing for CPA exam and I have very high arithmetic skill and have an analytical & systematic way of thinking. I am also multi-cultural and can easily adapt with people from different culture. I have been stuck to academic environment for a long time and I am very excited to taste the professionalism in real life. I am willing to work hard and work as a team in any environment.
I will be leaving for LA next week and would be ready for an interview.
I will respond promptly with any additional materials you may need and would welcome the opportunity to further discuss my qualifications. Please feel free to contact me through email at annietabio@yahoo.com
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Annie Han
Okay. I have never done this kind of thing and this is my very first resume & cover letter.
If you want to rephrase any grammer error, misplacement or awkward sentence, you are more than welcome!
But most importantly, since I leave next week, I cant send this to America. It would take weeks.
Anyway I got the Big4s E-mail and career website. But, dont I need to send them a high school diploma or the evidence that I am attending college? Also, typical cover letter includes signature. So should I print->sign->scan->signed cover letter?
Thank you in advance. :)
Answer: Annie,
Under skills delete the first line regarding arithmetic. This is not needed.
I would leave out the web sites for Kaist as well as the description since you haven't yet graduated.

You don't need to bring a high school diploma. A current transcript wouldn't be necessary at this point. Overall great job - far better than most Americans.

Is University College London overrated?
If so, which school is it more alike? University of Toronto, maybe?
The rating system is hard to justify when individual subject scores amount to relatively high total rankings. (UCL for example) Click on the school, then "World University Ranking"
TimesQS

Answer: What needs to be remembered is that these assessments are carried out by other academics of similar departments. And, having worked around them for years and years, I know that these assessors are all part of an 'old boys' club' who work on the basis of 'you wash my back and I wash yours' so...I'm always sceptical of these 'top 20 charts'.
That said though, a university, any university, is what *you* make of it. It's generally only snobbery that shapes what names make the lists.
