Cambodias ancient wonders suffer modern ills
DENIS D. GRAY Associated Press SIEM REAP, Cambodia A few thousand tourists surge up a Cambodian hillside. They trample over stonework and quaff beer at a sacred hilltop with spectacular views of one of the worlds greatest ancient monuments: Angkor Wat. An influx of tourists is hastening the deterioration of hundreds of ruins built by the kings of Angkor between the 9th and 14th centuries. The ...

Visiting Siem Reap, Cambodia to see Angkor Wat and temples?
Any suggestions about which temples to see? Did you just see the temples when you were in Siem Reap or did you explore the town as well? Any restaurant recommendations? I am vegetarian but want to sample the local cuisine.
Answer: In Siem Reap:
Accommodation: Dead fish inn. Good location but it can be a little noisy. Molly Malone’s costs a little more but has 4 poster beds and is quite nice. Of course there are all kinds of hotels here from $1000 a night to $5 a night.
Drinking: Dead Fish Bar; great architecture and crocodiles to feed. Pub Street of course with about 20 clubs offering everything and nothing. Try the Funky Monkey for good company and fewer tourists and they just moved to a bigger building. Very cool. My place to hang in SR.
Food: The Funky Monkey has the best western food in town and don’t miss their Quiz night on Thursday. It’s a blast.
Viva, Mexican food that is good but not great has a good selection of Tequila.
Dead Fish Café; Good food and as their sign say’s “We don’t serve no dog, cat or worm”
In the afternoon hang out at Aqua a combination bar and pool.. It’s out toward the bus stop. Great music and a large pool for cooling off. Foods OK as well.
There are a couple of Markets in Siem Reap but nothing spectacular. Many of the Small shops have great Knock off Cambodian artifacts and there might even be some real stuff once in a while. Remember, The government will not let you take most stuff out of the country. Be careful or somebody will be reselling your purchases the next day!
Angkor Wat is wonderful and not just one temple site. You can get away from the tourists by visiting any of the hundreds of temples that are not the tourist norm. Angkor and Bayon are the standards and Ta Prohm is where they filmed the Tomb Raider movie with Angelina Jolie. Very picturesque. Most people go to Angkor for sunrise then Bayon then Ta Prohm . Switch that around and go to Ta Prohm first and you will miss the mass of tourists. By 9:00 or so Angkor has cleared out and is still wonderful. Also, lots of the galleries do not have artificial lighting so its better later in the morning. You will actually be able to see the amazing wall carvings.

Does anyone know the cheapest/best way to get to Sihanoukville from Siem Reap?
I am traveling to Siem Reap in Cambodia to see the Wats at Ankor and I am then going to Sihanoukville for a few days to relax on the beach. I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a bus/train that runs between the two or if a taxi is the best option...Im leaving June 20th...Need Help!!!
Answer: The cheapest and best way is by BUS. The bus companies are well organised and professionnal.
Between $6 and $10 for Siem Reap to Phnom Penh (~6hours)
and the same $6 to $10 for Phnom Penh to Sihanouk-ville (~4hours).
Although possible, it's a bit long to do it in one day, better to have a night stop in Phnom Penh.
Any hotel where you will stay could help you to buy the bus ticket.
It is also possible by taxi, but a little more difficult to book a taxi.

Whats the best way to get from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap?
Since Yahoo doesnt have a Cambodia category I thought Id try this question here, besides flying, whats the best way to travel between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap? Thanks.
Answer: The river boat to/from Phnom Penh takes around five to six hours.
The best company doing the Siem Reap to Phnom Penh run is Mekong Express, which costs US$8 and takes around four hours. All buses break the journey for a snack at Kompong Thom. The Mekong Express buses have a toilet on board -- other (cheaper) services often do not.

Flying into BKK and leaving to Siem Reap Cambodia - is it safe?
I understand that downtown Bangkok is not safe. However, is it safe to fly into BKK and leave for Siem Reap Cambodia? I believe there is a bus service that leaves from the airport going to Aranyprathet, is that still running? We fly in at 11:40 in early June - would it be a good idea to hire a taxi and leave immediately to Aranyprathet. Thoughts?
Answer: No problem just don't hang around BKK and head straight to Siem Reap.

What is the best bus in Phnom Penh should I ride in going to Siem Reap?
I am going to Siem Reap this October. Will you kindly suggest what is the best bus I should take in going to this place. How much does it cost? Are there bus plying to that place in the evening. Please help. Also what are the cheap guest house in Pnohm Penh?
Answer: i think just about any guest house you stay at in phnom penh will be able to organise a variety of bus tickets to siem reap. there are really cheap guesthouses at the lakeside where a lot of backpackers stay but the rooms are not nice. if you want a solid door there's plenty of guest houses you can stay at for under $10, have a look at www.canbypublications.com
the cheap buses to siem reap all get there and the khmer ppl on them will be friendly even if its not especially comfortable and karaoke's blaring at you. the more expensive buses are the same except more white people and karaoke and the A/C might be working. i think the mekong express company is the most expensive, they might even give you a cake on the way lol. they charged $10 to siem reap last time i checked. the cheapest bus is about $5, ask your guesthouse.

Anyone going to Siem Reap from BKK on the 3rd SEP? Need other travellers to share a taxi. :D?
Im going to Siem Reap from Bangkoks Hua Lamphong train station at 05.55 AM.
The transportation from immigration point Poiphet to Siem Reap itself cost around USD40. Need to share the taxi/van/truck or whatever there is to cut down the budget.
Let me know if you happen to go to Siem Reap at the same date.
Thanks.

How do I travel by land from Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh, then from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap?
I want to know the best way to travel by land from Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh, then from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. How many hours will the trip take and how much will it cost?
Answer: Very easy. There are some transport companies providing bus to Phnom Penh from Ho Chi Minh city, 10 to 12 USD/ticket, sold at some travel offices in Pham Ngu Laos area. Cambodian companies such as Mekong Express and Capitol tours and Vietnamese Mai Linh are all good service and safe. They will go straight to Phnom Penh, no changing bus at the border. By the way, they will also get visa to Cambodia for you for some extra service charge.
It's a 6-7 hours from Ho Chi Minh city to Phnom Penh. And the same time for Phnom Penh- Siem Reap. Use those companies for bus to Siem Reap also, another 10 USD/ticket.
So have fun and nice trip in Cambodia.

Hassle free way to get from Bangkok to Siem Reap please?
I just want to get on a bus in Bangkok, sit back relax enjoy the ride and arrive in Siem Reap ?
Is there a good bus company you could recommend please ?
Or does the train do this route?
Thanks everybody !
Answer: Hi there,
as other have said yes flying is easy but extremely expensive costing anywhere from $50 us to $200 us return but since ive traveled from bangkok to siem reap on 5 occasions now the best and easiest way i found was to catch the 5am 1st class bus from mochit station in bkk and i usually arrived in Aran around 9.30am to 10am with the government bus from there i caught a tuk tuk to the border markets and went through immigration as smooth as honey got my visa and than caught to free transport bus down the road and got a taxi for $30 US to siem and was there around 2.30pm to 3pm i find this to be the best travel way just when at the border don't listen to all the touts offering to get the visa for you and what not as it takes less than 5minutes to do it your self and you will get charged like an extra $15 for your visa if you let them do it for you there are no direct buses from bkk to siem reap i hope that helped if you have any more questions just send me an email.

what is the best way to get to poipet border from siem reap?
i want to cross the border of thai and cambodia from siem reap.. i know that poipet is where the cambodia immigration is.. but how do i get to poipet?
is taxi the best way to get there?
or is there any bus that could take me there?
how much would it cost?
and how long will it take?
thanks in advance
Answer: A pickup from your hotel (between 7am and 7.30 am) brings you to a busstop in Siem Reap. A bigger bus (8 am, not very comfortable) will bring you to Poipet on the cambodian side of the border. It will stop for 15 minutes at a small shop and restroom. Just 5km before the border it will stop again, for a full hour at a restaurant (at 11am this is quite early for lunch). You will get a new guy on the bus that says he will take you across the border into a new bus. He takes your ticket (make sure you keep it) and replaces it with a sticker (red, white, yellow). The guy actually takes the group across the border and there tries to pursuade some people to take other busses that will take them faster to their destination (pay extra of course). Then suddenly the guy takes off and the group will wait for about 1 hour before noticing that he is not coming back. Another guy will then bring you to a pickup truck (or something similar) and drop you at a restaurant in Aranyapratet on the Thai side of the border. They will tell you the bus is an hour late due to cleaning (pickup should be 2.30 am). Whether this bus will ever arrive is unknown.
Best way to do this travel is with a private van, minibus or local bus to Poipet (2.5 hrs). Then walk across the border with your luggage. On the thai side there are taxi's that charge around 1900 baht to bring you straight to Bangkok. Sharing a taxi might be a good idea to bring down the costs. Another possibility is to take a tuktuk to the busstation in Aranyapratet (about 10 minutes from the border) and find a local bus from there. Be sure to ask if there are different busses (VIP, express, etc), some might be faster than others. Busses should leave regularly. There are at least busses departing to Moh Chit Northern Busstation in Bangkok at 1pm and 2.30pm. Due to traffic near Bangkok this trip takes between 4-6 hrs. From Moh Chit you can walk the 2.5 km to the skytrain station Moh Chit, which is south west of the busstation. Alternatively you can take a taxi into town. The trip to Sukhumvit Road takes about 40 minutes if you are willing to pay the 45 baht highway fee (up to two hours otherwise).
