Answer: Cheetahs are in trouble for many reasons, genetic diversity is really not one of them. Not sure where you heard that.
The problems are loss of habitat, loss of prey, predation of cubs and from larger predators (lion, leopard), poaching and the killing of cheetahs by ranchers (cheetah go after livestock).

Is it ok to finish roof off with dry verge flush with wall, ie: no overhang or soffits?
Roof of our new build property has been finished on side elevations with dry verge. No overhang or soffits. Rainwater runs down the side walls and has now caused unsightly staining to the white roughcast finish. Builder is adamant there is no fault. Can anyone advise if dry verge are intended to be used in this way?
Answer: Dry verge needs 30mm overhang. Also, having a mortar filled flush end is an acceptable construction method but will give you the annoying problem you mention.
You could neatly cut/remove the bottom part of the dry verge and I'm sure the Marley ones will still lock together. Just means you can't use the starter on the first one so a screw within a black cap would solve this.
Building regs stipulate the ventilation for roofs so if it's soffit absent then it must have over fascia vents on the fascia board. Also Marley do a Dry Ridge system to vent the roof.
You would have to take back a couple of tiles from the side elevation to notch the brickwork to install ladder rails to make a soffit. Not the biggest of jobs, done a few now for customers.

What are the rules about parking on the verge of a road?
What are the rules about parking on the verge of a road, on a strip of land which is clearly not a footpath, nor being used for access, but is public land, but is land off the highway, even though the highway is clearly marked with yellow lines, parking restrictions, residents notices and so forth? Is it illegal to park there? can you be fined there?
Answer: It depends to what extent the council has adopted the highway. This usually means the carriageway (for vehicles) and the footways (for pedestrians) and the whole lot are bundled as 'highways'. Some roads do not have footways at all, only rough verges and this is where the problem lies. The verges may have been adopted with the road in which case parking is illegal because the yellow lines etc. cover the highway irrespective of which side of the lines you park. If they have only adopted the carriageway but not the verges which will belong to the frontager then they are not classed as 'highway' and the restrictions do not apply.
The normal test for adoption is whether the council has undertaken any maintenance of the verge eg. grass cutting, bush removal. This in itself though is not always the case. An unmaintained verge could still be adopted if it has say street lighting or services such as water, telephones, gas electricity etc.
Not a straight forward answer I'm afraid but you have hit on a complex area of legislation.

Why does a neighbour insist on putting the rubbish bin on my front verge?
For over a year my neighbour has been putting her rubbish bins on my front lawn (verge, council land) when they have heaps of room on their own property which has a larger frontage. The previous owners wouldnt have dreamed of doing such a thing. My property frontage is quite small, so it looks so obvious, when other bins are placed along side mine. I have tried to place mine very close to the edge of the boundary, and still hers is plonked right next to mine. This has caused problems with the garbage truck, and often, when he has to back up to turn around, my bins have been run over, split and usually found laying on the ground. Is this just arogance or just plain nasty?
Answer: Sounds like your neighbor is just plain disrespectful. Try talking to him or her and if that doesn't work, try putting your bins on her lawn and see how she likes it!

Is it true that a person on the verge of finding a cure for cancer was once murdered?
I remember vaguely reading about -what I believe- was a brilliant Russian scientist in the US who was on the verge of finding a breakthrough cure for Cancer. He mysteriously dissapeared shortly before he was to go public with his findings. Parts of his body later washed up in some lake. This sounds logical, the Pharmaceutical community would have stood to lose billions had he been succesful.
Is there any truth to this?

Whats the advantage of a roof having a "dry verge"?
First I need to make it plain that I work away from home a lot, for weeks at a time. The area we live in is mainly bungalows and houses- 1960s 1970s and 1980s. The roofs are all standard construction whith "gable ends", and the ends of the tiles were cemented to prevent water ingress.
I recently noticed taht - as if by magic- about 75% of these housesd are now sporting UPVC tiling on the edge of their roofs, and very smart it looks too. I strongly suspect that some company or other has been doing a big promotion in the area!
Having looked around on the internet I find that this is called a "DRY VERGE" . You can buy dry verge kits on Ebay and probably do it for about 90 pounds per gable.
Has anyone had experience of fitting this "dry verge" stuff? - and OK it looks good but how cost effective is it?
Answer: Dry verges and ridges eliminate the need for mortar pointing. Mortar has a tendency to shrink and crack over time and will often fall out or allow water to enter the roof space through cracks.
Dry verges and ridges are normally made by manufacturers for specific tile profiles as a good fit is fundamental to their operation as a weatherstop. I would avoid buying off ebay as there is a good chance you will get the wrong profile for your type of tile.
I would suggest that the generic UPVC unit being fitted to your neighbours houses is better than the ebay purchase but a long way short of the manufacturers specific unit.
Get a quote from the UPVC guys and ask a few neighbours how it has performed over time. Don't be mislead by any warranties as they are not normally worth a carrot. Bank on the UPVC lasting about 10 years before the UV light will have made it brittle and yellowed. Time for replacement !?

What rights do residents have regarding trees on grass verge outside their house?
I live in a beautiful treelined estate of family homes, a neighbour has taken onto himself to badly prune these trees, when I returned from a holiday I found he had "butchered" the tree right outside my home, I have looked after it for 20 years, gently pruning it and general mainentance , ie. grass cutting and weeding of the grass verge. could someone tell me do I have any legel rights to protect this area--thank you

Answer: Technically speaking, I think it is the sole responsibility of your local council. Everything these days is tied up in the Health and Safety rules and regulations, and who is covered by insurance. If a branch fell on you and injured you while you were pruning this tree - I guess you would have no claim to Insurance.
So anything that is troubling you about these trees is best reported to the council (not that some of them will take any action).
But I do understand your dilemma and I do sympathise. We should value our trees more.
(P.S. Our local council once `Prune butchered` our verge trees, and killed a couple of them.)

What is a good way to raise money and/or food donations for a no-kill animal shelter on the verge of closing?
My local humane society is on the verge of closing due to lack of donations. Food, money, cleaning supplies, etc. The unfortunate part of them closing, they eventually will have to put down all of the animals if no other shelters will take them. There are just under 200 cats & dogs in this shelter. What can an individual do?
Answer: Our local shelter got together with our local grocery store.
There's a section in the store where I can buy a bag for 5, 10, or 20 dollars. In each bag are items the shelter needs. I buy a bag each time I shop there.
My vet office has a coffee can on their counter for cash donations. I also can buy cat/dog food in large bags to donate.
Important thing is to get the word out to people.

I met with 5 different attys that told me if I commingled any funds by even a penny, they become community property....they are my sole and separate property, always were, I owned them before I even met this guy, he had a ruthless, personal injury atty, and I had a worthless, could care less atty, paying her $400/hr, I fired her, but they were all the same, and they all told me the same thing, I even had one tell me "now you know how men feel". I had to refinance all the properties and put huge loans on them to come up with the million dollars to pay him off. So I have negative cash flow. If I sell them, I have huge capital gains taxes.
The attys had us settle out of court, so I never had to have him quit claim the properties, because they were never his.
Answer: You could get child support, but he could sue for violation of contractual agreement. Why not give him custody?

that reminds me of the ending of that movie Cocoon: The Return, where one of them didnt stay awake long enough to go back to where the Cocoon would pick them up at around midnight, so he missed it. So, I guess maybe he didnt want it bad enough because he was with a woman he cared for who wanted him to stay with her? So like, if she was already there at the rendezvous waiting for him, would he then have the energy to stay awake and go there?
Is that basically how it is for those in critical condition, on the verge of death, where its hard for them to try to live on, that they have to REALLY want it bad enough to live on, whether its from someone trying to encourage them to live on and them agreeing with it or they themselves having a good enough reason for themselves to want to live on?
