NEW DELHI: The Congress core group, which met here on Friday for the first time after the serial blasts in Mumbai, seemed more worried about the Telangana agitation rather than the terror strikes or the bickering with ally NCP which holds the Maharashtra home portfolio.
Though they did come up for discussion, it was the Telangana issue that dominated the agenda of the Congress top brass..

So it is the partys survival in AP State that is engaging their urgent and serious attention, rather than the bomb blasts in Maharashtra that has shaken the whole country!
Even otherwise we dont believe the cinematic pathos these leaders exhibit in public whenever precioius human lives are lost due to lax govt surveillance and pre emptive action, to curb terror! But the above news is really upsetting!
After all Telangana was not an issue kicked off by people in recent years.. It was a long time demand that was nearly buried till late YSR Reddy, CM of AP assured the Telangana party of a favourable decision if they aligned with Congress for fighting elections! This revived the nearly buried hope of separate statehood in them!
And when its own party men had joined the Telangana protagonists, the apex level is burning midnight oil to arrive a decision, that bristles with potential backlashes whichever way they decided!
Actually this has been the apex Congress style of functioning! They always worry about how to book Modi or curb the scion of YSR getting popular, how to screw up Karnataka Governor or appease Karunanidhi.. so forth! They least care about the burning Maoist atrocities or the persistent harassment of fishermen off Tamilnadu coasts... etc!
So do you still hope that MM Singh still remembers his eloquent promise gifted a couple of days ago that his govt would ensure security from terror in future?

Answer: Seriousness of this Govt about terror can also be checked by seeing the long list of its unkept promises made after 26/11. Here is a list of some of them & their present status :
1) National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) : New federal intelligence agency to deal with all aspects of terrorism was to be set up by 2010-end
Status: Nowhere in sight
2) Multi Agency Centre (MAC) : On December 31, 2008, it was energised with compulsory membership from all intelligence agencies Its mandate: To monitor terrorism, MAC was to be subsumed in NCTC
Status: Active, issues terror warnings, most of which have turned out to be false
3) National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) : 21 databases such as those of banks, railways and emigration were to be networked for seamless access to intelligence agencies
Target completion date: 2011-end
Status: CCS approved preliminary phase this June. Far behind schedule
4) National Investigation Agency (NIA) : Federal agency for investigating terror-related cases
Status: Active, handling a few cases. Limited success
5) Immigration, Visa and Foreigners' Registration and Tracking : Integrated service delivery framework to facilitate legitimate travellers and strengthen security, to network Indian embassies, emigration offices with Central Foreigners' Bureau
Status: Work in progress.
6) Maritime Security Advisory and Maritime Security Adviser : Proposal was to ensure coordinated maritime response with an adviser on lines of NSA for maritime issues
Status: Thwarted by turf war
7) Registration of vessels : All vessels operating in Indian waters were to be compulsory registered, with transponders for vessel identification on each of them
Status: Incomplete
8) ID Cards to Fishermen : To ensure that no stranger was able to sneak in through the shore, government decided to issue compulsory ID cards to fishermen
Status: Incomplete in most states
9) Modernisation of Coast Guard and new stations : A major thrust area to improve efficiency of Coast Guard by inducting new boats, aircraft, helicopters and increasing new stations
Status: Expansion and modernization under way
Almost three years after one of the deadliest attack on india this is the level of our preparedness. Some progress has been made but alot needs to be done.
PS : btw congress had promised formation of telangana state during the assembly elections of andhra pradesh. Creating telangana state was also in the common minimum program of UPA-I. The telangana people have once again started protesting because they have understood that all the promises were a part of vote bank politics. Hope the indian muslim community also realise this.
