What are some symptoms of lymphoma-cancer of lymph nodes?
I have been told by my doctor that I may have this and he has sent be for a battery of tests.
Answer: Symptoms of lymphoma include chills, swelling of the lymph nodes, which are often, but not always painless, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, lack of energy, itching. Please note that many of these symptoms are not specific for lymphoma and may be cause by many other things.

If my dog is diagnosed with lymphoma cancer, how much will his chemo sessions cost for me?
Hes only 2, so I still want to give him a chance to live.
They are still doing tests but the vet has said it is likely my 2 year old border collie has Lymphoma cancer. Around how much Canadian $ will each chemo session cost? The vet has yet to tell me, and I would like to know in advance.

Answer: A lot. Most likely, your dog will be put on a protocol which rotates among three or four medications. Chemo drugs vary in cost, and cost will be based on the weight of the dog. Lymphoma is one of the cancers which is most responsive to chemotherapy, particularly if treatment is started immediately. The duration of time a dog will get for a remission is not predictable, but some dogs do quite well for quite a long time. If a dog comes out of remission, it is usually possible to start chemo over again.
I would ask your oncologist about the use of half-body radiation. It has been a few years since I was having a lymphoma dog treated, and half-body radiation was just beginning to be used and showed considerable promise. It is important that that be done as early in treatment as possible, at least that was the recommendation six or seven years ago.
I would suggest you begin a home prepared diet, either raw or cooked (I had no problems with immune suppression and raw even after almost three years of almost continuous chemo). You want to eliminate as much of the carbohydrate as possible. You also might want to do a one-time consult with a holistic vet experienced in dietary supplementation for cancer dogs. There are some medicinal mushrooms and herbs and such which may be very helpful. There are some canine cancer groups on Yahoo which might be resources for you and I also HIGHLY recommend the Yahoo group K9Nutrition (enter it exactly that way in the Yahoogroups search box).

Don't expect the kind of side effects from chemo that humans experience. Most dogs do not have any adverse responses to the medications at the dosages at which they are used. My dog had a couple of days when she seemed to feel just a little bit punk. She had excellent quality of life during her treatment.

Lymphoma Cancer?
Can it be cured and how bad is it, any information will do.
Answer: Yes, it can be cure but depends on the stage and type. There are 2 types of lymphoma which are non-hodgkin and hodgkin. Hodgkin lymphoma is fatal but the most curable cancer when treated. But, the prognosis depends on the patient and symptoms. Prognosis less good with B symptoms(fever, night sweat, loss weight), older age or lymphocyte-depleted type. For non-hodgkin, it depends on the histological type. Other factors include age, stage, extranodal sited and LDH level. Stages for Hodgkin lymphoma are:
I-Single lymph node region
II- 2 or more lymph node
III-more extensive than stage II
IV- extranodal involvement(liver or bone marrow)
So, the result depend on stage. Stage 1 and II, the cure rate is about 80-90% while stage III and IV-50-70%. It's good enough. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are the treatment of choice.

A lump in your neck doesn't necessarily mean it's lymphoma.
Usually only swollen lymph node due to weak immune system.. it's an alarm that your body is fighting against infection.

Answer: NHL is not genetic but some families do have a slight predisposition to develop various types of NHL (usually not the same exact disease). This might be due to living together in the same area where there is environmental or radiation pollution and has nothing to do with genetics. There is no direct link like if your mother had NHL then your chances of developing NHL are 10%. Also, some types of NHL put a person at risk for developing second types of NHL that are of differing type and aggressiveness. Whatever immune defect causes the first NHL can also tend to cause a second type of NHL in the same person. There is a lot that is not yet known about specific causes for NHL. Much of today's info about cause of NHL is just speculation and not proven facts.

What the methods recommended to treat tonsillitis lymphoma/cancer?
My doctors said my condition is quite critical. Tumor removal surgery is not possible @ the moment. Recommended concurrent chemotherapy & radiation. Answer: Chemo is taking prescription medication to destroy the tumor. It is not used for tonsillitis, but it is for lymphoma. You already know the answer to your question. If you do not believe your doctor get another opinion.

Hi my mother has been diagnosed with lymphoma cancer we do not know what type at the moment?
Mum is 60 years old and this lymphoma is in her small bowel we have our first appointment next wednesday what should we expect ? (dont know if this makes a difference but mum is a tea to taller and a non smoker) we have to go to the hematology unit .
Answer: At your first visit with the cancer specialist (oncologist), he/she will most likely spend time getting your mother's medical history, both from her and from the records that have been forwarded to him/her from your mother's GP. He/she will perform a very basic physical examination, and will most likely order some more tests, depending on what the GP may have already done. These tests will most likely include simple blood tests, as well as a CT scan or PET scan if not already done, to see if the cancer has spread. He/she will carefully review the results of your mother's biopsy to determine exactly what type of lymphoma it is. Based on all of these results, the oncologist will be able to come up with some options for treatment for your mother, as well as giving her a very rough estimate of what her chances of survival are. It may take more than 2 or 3 visits with the oncologist to finally get to that point, however, so although it is very frustrating to wait when your life is literally on the line like that, The tests do take time to perform and to properly interpret, and no one wants to do things hastily and make a mistake that may very well hurt your mother's chances of recovery.

Has your Dog lived longer then the life expectancy after the diagnosis of Lymphoma cancer?
My dog unfortunatly has Lymphoma cancer, she was diagnosed 3 weeks ago, she is only a 4 year old Cocker-Spaniel, still a puppy through my eyes, the Oncologist/ Specialist clarified that if she continues untreated she will live up to 2 months with out Chemo. Has anyone had a dog that went with out chemo and lived longer or past the two months??? Help please!
Answer: I had a pet with the same issue. Do NOT put them through Chemo.
With Chemo they will suffer gravely for the rest of their dying days. However, if you just do your best to make your pet comfy and treat him/her well with healthy foods, it may live a bit longer than expected and it wont suffer nearly as much.
We kept our pet until we saw it really suffering and were forced to put him down so that he wouldn't be in pain. But he had several months of normal happy living and we got to say our goodbyes and have good happy memories of him.
I would suggest the same. Definitely do not put your pet through radiation.

There are basically 2 major categories of Lymphoma, then a lot of subtypes, that I don't really know that much about.
First is Hodgkin's Lymphoma. It usually strikes younger adults, more often males. It usually follows a pattern, starting with the upper body, the lymph nodes in the neck or under the arms. It usually spreads on one side, above the diaphragm and then below.If it is above the diaphragm, it is more treatable.
30 years ago it was nearly always a death sentence. Now it is one of the most treatable forms of cancer, as long as it is found early. I do not know the exact treatments but it would be radiation and/or chemo. Hodgkin's has symptoms that include fever, and some fatigue. Some people who have it will experience pain in the affected nodes if they drink alcoholic beverages. There are also frequent cases of the skin being very itchy.
Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma can start in just about any lymph gland and spread. I think there are several types, but I do not know all of them. It used to be called Lymphosarcoma. It does not usually have the symptoms like fever and itching, so far as I know. I know more about Hodgkin's because I had two relatives, who were not related to each other, who had Hodgkin's 35 or 40 years ago. Both died because there was not much in the way of treatment.
Metastized cancer can spread into the lymph nodes from other organs and not be Primary Lymphoma. When any cancer spreads to the lymph nodes from say the breast, or lungs, it is usually a bad sign.
The lymphatic system is the main part of the immune system. The lymphocytes that are made in the lymphatic system are white blood cells that help fight infection and germs. Some people with AIDS also can get a form of Lymphoma, but many people have it without having AIDS.
Lymphoma and Leukemia can be very much alike in the sense that the white cells do not fight germs and infection, with Leukemia because there are too many, but ineffective white cells, and in Lymphoma because the lymph nodes are destroyed and the white cells are not produced.
Just be there for him. He might at some time need help getting to a doctor or something like that, or depending on his circumstances, you might see to it he has nutritious food if he lives alone or anything, or help out family members with things if they need it. Caring for somebody with cancer, if it becomes severe or life-threatening can be very hard on the immediate family as well as the patient.

How long can you live with lymphoma cancer that is showing up in spleen?
My grandma (64yrs old) recieved her test results today, hoping to hear that she was in remission the results show the cancer has spread even more in her spleen and some in her liver. She didnt ask her doctor how long she can live with this, but Id like to hear some experiences of this type.
Answer: If the cancer has spread, there are probably treatments for it: surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation.
You need to ask the doc if it's growing aggressively or slowly. No one can predict how long any patient will live, but the doc might have some estimate.

Answer: Actually there really aren't any symptoms early on. As the lymph nodes swell they can push on the intestines causing a blockage which leads to a partial or complete bowel blockage. The treatment for lymphoma can be pretty tough but you can easily go into remission. Are you having symptoms that you aren't sure about or have you been diagnosed?
