something no one seems to realize about the i am legend alternate ending?
alright so the I am legend alternate ending. no one seems to realize the whole butterfly thing. in the beginning of the movie his son said to him in the car "look daddy, look at the butterflys" and formed his hands like a butterfly. then at the end he realizes there is a butterfly tattoo on the mutants neck he has been experimenting on and the mutant trying to get to her smears a butterfly shape on the glass barrier. no one seems to mention that, but my theory is maybe its showing that its his son and wife?

I have to say that the alternate ending is far far FAR closer to the ending of the book.
The theatrical ending was a pathetic cop out by Hollywood, showing once again that those who make the decisions (producers/studio execs) have no creativity, and they're slowly sucking the life out of all the writers and directors who do.
***SPOILER ALERT***
The idea is that Neville has been living the last few years thinking of himself as the only normal person left, and that all of the other people are monsters (vampires in the book).
Monsters are legends in todays society.
At the end, Neville realises that in the eyes of this new society of monsters HE is the monster. "I am Legend".
He's been murdering, kidnapping and experimenting on members of this new society with no thought about their well being.
These are quotes from the last page of the book.
"And suddenly he thought, I'm the abnormal one now. Normalcy was a majority concept, the standard of many and not just the standard of just one man."
"he knew that, like the vampires, he was anathema and black terror to be destroyed."
"A new terror born in death, a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever.
I am legend."
Richard Matheson is a brilliant writer and I recommend his books to any and everybody.

He apologized because he realised that he was in the wrong.
He had never thought that what he was doing was wrong before that moment and when he saw how he was perceived he expressed his honest remorse.
Also the syringe wasn't filled with the cure.
I went to imdb after answering your question earlier today and found that you're not alone when it comes to not understanding this ending.
One thing that seems nobody remembers is near the beginning of the movie, when his cure failed and the subject died, he would inject them with something that would put them back to their normal infected state.
That's what he did. The treatment had already worked on the female infected. She was cured. When he injected her she was turned back to her normal infected state. She was uncured.

I have seen that movie with Bruce Campbell "Army of Darkness" and it had an alternate ending (you know, the demon encounter in the grocery and the futuristic scene ending). I didnt find the alternate "controversial" ending all that controversial. Has anyone else? I actually like it better than the original, which was a huge copout from the film having to mean anything more than being another blockbuster action movie. Does anyone else agree?
Answer: ...admittedly, I have not been the greatest advocate of this movie, especially here, on Yahoo Answers; the new film deviated so very much from author Richard Matheson's original novel, so much so, as to culminate into something less than a pale shadow of the original story. However, even though the alternate ending is still very far removed from the ending originally envisioned by Matheson, it still made for a much more satisfying conclusion, as compared to the ending, which was theatrically shown...

I recently bought the movie I am Legend. I meant to buy the one with the alternate ending, but I didnt. by the time I noticed it was the wrong one, it was already opened. So, basically, my question is: are there any MAJOR differences between the theatrical and alternate version of the movie? or are there just some extra scenes?

In the last scene when they are in his basement and the infected people are benging on the glass, it turns out that the main one is in love with the specimen that Will Smith's character has been experimenting on. He understands this and gives her back, and the zombies leave him alone and go away. He doesnt die like in the theatrical version.

An alternate ending to "I Am Legend" which may have ended up in the cutting room floor?
As we all know, most of those who have seen it agreed that it had a very disappointing ending. But I came across a clip of an alternate ending (check the link below). I think it would have made the whole movie a lot better for most viewers. Just be patient in downloading the clip. Its worth your time. I like the alternate ending. Would the clip change your critique of the overall quality of the movie and its storyline?

Answer: That's a much better ending. I wonder why they chose the other ending over this one. That was a part of the story that needed to be told. It still wouldn't have saved the movie completely (How did the Army forget to destroy That bridge? I guess they mis-counted). But it's a cool scene in and of itself. Thanks alot for posting it, though! Seriously, this is one of the best posts of the year.
