Answer: Gadfly is basically correct. Here is a good way to remember it. Validity applies only to deductive arguments and is when the truth of the premises guarantee the truth of the conclusion. Soundness is validity plus true premises.
For inductive arguments, the relevant concepts are strength and cogency. Soundness is to validity as cogency is to strength. So, cogency is strength plus true premises. But, as Gadfly mentioned, conclusions of inductive arguments cannot be certain in the way that conclusions of deductive argument can be.

Answer: No, it can't. Any good debater can argue or nit pick any point into circular reasoning based on interpretation, understanding, unknown information or the limits there of. For example can anything truly be "cogent"? To validate a condition, that condition must be proved "true", but what is definition of "true" and can actual truth be achieved? A "conditional argument" gets caught up in the many slippery slopes surrounding the conditions of the argument.
a good counter to this tactic it to be precise in your argument. Pinpoint your argument and give it know boundaries that can limit the topic. For example if your are debating the effects of inflation on the economy, then pinpoint the effects to a particular region, culture, native people, sex, education level.......ad you do this it will limit your opponents rebuttal and make your defense more sound. By taking this approach you might be able to convince listeners that your argument is "Cogent" based on your ability to pin your opponent down.

Answer: This is a very interesting question. To be honest I don't know that I can give you a good argument for my belief in the existence God based on any kind of fact. I don't know that anyone can really. A part of faith is believing when there is no "thing" to prove your faith. Another part of faith is the choice to believe. Choice also applies to "Not" believing. What anyone chooses is not for anyone else to judge. That is Gods job! ;)

What is the single strongest, most cogent argument against gay marriage?
I personally support gay marriage (Im gay and married, what can I say?) I have heard many arguments against gay marriage, but they usually dont hold up very well to reasoned argument.

Answer: I do not necessarily agree but here is the argument. The purpose of giving a married couple special rights under the law is to make it easier for them to raise children and pass their physical wealth and property on to the next generation. This is assuming that the partnership is a lifetime commitment and that children are raised (these may not be valid assumptions). A gay couple can not directly produce children. This is not to say that they do not raise any children, just that biologically they cannot produce children. The main purpose of marriage in Western culture is the production of children.
Where the gay community is falling short is in their lack of appropriately enlightening the general public about their problems having long term commitments without legal rights. No human alive is without moral sin. Some do not recognize that intolerance is a sin.
What complicates the issue in today’s American society is that there is still no scientific proof as to the reason people are gay. The general population fears that being gay is a learned response to environmental factors has little to do with genetics. Many assume that gay couples would raise gay children. This would defeat the purpose of marriage in their eyes.
Those that wish to make a moral issue out of it tend to be intolerant to others who are not part of their own subculture. Those who are misinformed tend to have no understanding about the legal issues with shared property, hospital visitation rights, insurance problems and others details of which you know but that they have never considered.

This is an example of a "contingent" truth:
"Cats are mammals.
Cats are reptiles.
Cats have claws.

So "contingent" just means what ever you "wish" could be true, such as "It is possible I could have been born rich so I wouldn't have to work."
So what? How does that relevant to a cogent argument?
I agree with the assessment made by some philosophers that the the dichotomy between necessary and contingent facts is false. In this case, we cannot say "cats could have evolved without claws", because if they had done so, they would not be the animals we know as "cats" because "cats do have claws". To be cats, they could NOT have evolved without claws.

What is a cogent argument against global warming?
I would like to hear a well-formed argument that does not try to make its point by bashing "liberal scientists", because that is an ad hominem attack, and not a valid argument. I am happy to hear a theological argument, because I realize that in arguments between "science" and "religion", people are looking at totally different things, not just disagreeing on the same points. Answer: In spite of what the other posters have said, there is no cogent scientific argument against global warming. That is why you generally see the "discussion" devolve into casting political epithets like "liberal", "socialist", "communist" and "it's a tax scam to take over the world". At this point, the only possible argument against global warming comes from the Judeo-Christian tradition of the Great Flood [the flooding of the Mediterranean basin?] and God's promise to not destroy the world again.
There is a problem with that argument, also. Look at Sodom and Gomorrah. They were destroyed, by God, after the Flood. God never promised not to destroy our civilization, only not to destroy the world. For those of you who have that religious objection, please consider the subsequent history given in the Bible. How many times were humans cast out naked into the wilderness?

The strange thing is that this explanation itself is "weak" because it states that "Weak justifications tend to be:" -- not that they ARE this or that, only that they "tend" to be this or that. Very ironic, but apropos to your question.
A justification can only come when this condition is met: p is true if and only if p corresponds to a fact. This is called the 'correspondence theory', advocated (oddly) by both Plato and Aristotle, and nearly every philosopher in the west, since. It merely means that the premise "p" must correspond to some fact about some portion of reality, that portion that you are discussing in your premise. http://www.iep.utm.edu/truth/#H3
The further you get from being able to prove your premise is true, the weaker it gets. That doesn't mean it is false. But if a "defeasor" argument can easily knock down your premise, it needs more justification. It is not completely justified until no more defeasors are found to knock it down. http://www.iep.utm.edu/ep-defea/
But you must understand logic if you are going to use "deep" and complicated premises, or overcome such defeasors that are "deeper" than your premise, because the defeasor might be a fallacy that you don't see. Fallacies can always be defeated--if you see it. But fallacies are used all the time to defeat weak arguments. Fallacies are used to sell coffee and cars; they are used to sway juries; they are used to sway voters.
There are only 256 categorical syllogisms; of these, only 15 are valid. Learn those 15 and then anything you see that is outside them is invalid. You should then be able to find a way to strengthen your own argument, or produce the defeasor to someone else's premise.
