Costas Karamanlis Would you buy a used car from this man
During the recent election campaign the centre right New Democracy ran the slogan quot Apofasi Eythynis quot quot The Responsible Choice quot and made much of the fact that they alone could be trusted with guiding the country s economy through the rough days ahead Indeed this was virtually the only slogan to grace the thousands of billboards featuring a heavily photoshoped portrait of prime minster Costas Karamanlis that sprung up in the weeks leading up to the October 4th vote It seems now that the promise was made in bad faith Despite swearing blind to Greek voters the parliament European Union Eurostat lenders and anyone else who d listen that the country s public borrowing for 2009 wouldn t exceed 3 7 of GNP figures presented by the new PASOK administration seem to show that the figure is likely to be between 10 and 12 of GNP A discrepancy which has prompted the EU s economy commissioner Joaquin Almunia to order an inquiry into how the New Democracy government cooked the books on this particular deal The money markets less restrained by political and diplomatic considerations were not fooled by the previous government s creative accounting and so downgraded the country s credit rating to the lowest in the Eurozone making the cost of further public borrowing even more expensive No wonder Karamanlis decided on a quick election despite intense opposition from within his own party Unlike everyone else the country s leadership knew that the lid was about to blow on this financial mess and that if they didn t take the money and run soon the electoral consequences would be even more dire The policy seems to have been lose the elections let the opposition deal with the mess and take the blame for the austerity measures that will be imposed on Greece in return for further lending Then when the electorate starts to lose patience present themselves as a more reasonable alternative A fitting tactic for an administration that managed to get itself mixed up in over 50 scandals in just two years

Isnt Obama doing the politically *smart* thing by *not* cutting spending or having Austerity programs?
Think about it this way:
In the middle of the worldwide Great Recession, Greece and Spain elected Socialist governments.
Now these are the governments having to cut spending dramatically to balance budgets.
Therefore, the voters end up blaming the Socialists for cost-cutting misery, and would vote in their conservative rivals for a change.
So lets say Obama and the Democrats actually did cut the government spending (as the Tea Party wishes).
Then people in America would be furious at the loss of social services, think of the Obama administration as one of continued bleakness, and hand a huge majority to the GOP.
So wouldnt Obama be shooting himself in the foot if he cut spending?
Answer: That is a very ignorant way to look at things. If Obama cut government spending on social services it would make me happy. I would even consider voting for him 2012. The majority of people who need social services need some motivation to go out and do something with themselves anyway. At a certain point you can't print any more money and whole system will crash. We need to cut government spending big time. The government could then try and pay off all our debt and at a certain point taxes could be drastically cut for the people and they will look at history and know who finally pulled the plug on the free rides for lazy people. On Sunday, the IMFs governing body will to vote on Greeces request for a 40-billion-dollar loan from the world lending institution.
Obama commended Greece for its proposed "very difficult measures" of some 30 billion euros (38 billion dollars) in tax hikes and spending cuts.
But Greece was still plagued by concern that the draconian austerity measures could plunge the recession-hit Greek economy into deeper trouble, dampen productive initiative and create cracks in social cohesion.

What does this mean for the EU...?
Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates has resigned after parliament rejected an austerity budget.
The defeat is likely to trigger a bailout similar to the rescue packages Greece and the Republic of Ireland had to accept last year.
All five opposition parties voted against the austerity measures, which included spending cuts and tax rises.
Mr Socrates had earlier said he would no longer be able to run the country if the budget was not adopted.
Elections are likely to take place in a few months time.
Mr Socrates, from the centre-left Socialist Party, presented his resignation to President Anibal Cavaco Silva two hours after the vote in parliament.

Answer: Good, I hoped that this was the subject. It’s good to see another user on the ball. This doesn't look good for the future and may impact on the Tories fanciful economic predictions quite heavily. But although slagged off at the time, Iceland are now seen as being astute in not taking banking bailouts and just letting them go bust and I am coming around to this way of thinking. Initially I thought that Gordon Brown had made the right call, although I’ve always thought that they could have squeezed any deal that they wanted to out of the banks at the time in 2008. That was a chance missed and the banks continue to flout our generosity by paying themselves obscene bonuses. This year, even though RBS made a loss of £600m, they were still able to scrape together £1.2 billion for bonuses. That is crazy or we’re not being told the truth.
Why do 90% of Arabs know what to do about it and why don't 90% of people here not know what to do? Is it something they put in the water?

Is Greece on the way to become an autonomous province of EU?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financetopics/financialcrisis/7252288/Greece-loses-EU-voting-power-in-blow-to-sovereignty.html
"The council of EU finance ministers said Athens must comply with austerity demands by March 16 or lose control over its own tax and spend policies altogether. It if fails to do so, the EU will itself impose cuts under the draconian Article 126.9 of the Lisbon Treaty in what would amount to economic suzerainty. "
I asked a question about it a week ago:

"Since Greece has long become the new sick man of Europe, I think a public debt administration should be established and assigned rights to collect various tax and customs revenues of Greece to the administration as the interest and capital payments of domestic and foreign debts."
I was not seriously thinking they would take control of Greeces economy, but they are about to do it!
Answer: How many more times have I got tell you that your suggestion/assumption cannot happen. It is impossible for any nation or group of nations to takeover a sovereign state unless they overrun it with military force. What you are seeing is a government that is lax and impotent, spending money they have not got. The answer is a general election with the socialist party being ejected from power.
I will NOT get into a political debate but history has proved that "Socialist" governments always overspend money they do not have. The same thing is happening in other EU countries to a lesser degree, you only have to look at the debt built up by the UK government to understand the problem. Category: Greece
