Is Female Genital Mutilation legal in the US?
If it isnt, then why is male genital mutilation legal?
Circumsising moms, why did you choose to do it. Im not looking down on you, just want to know why.
Really wasnt trying to step on your toes berd, seriously, but thats what its called technically.
Answer: Yes fortunately female genital mutilation, and ANY form of modifying a girl's genitals, is illegal.
Male genital mutilation is still legal based on myths and old wives' tales that it's cleaner, healthier, or otherwise beneficial.
85% of men worldwide are NOT circumcised. The USA is the only developed country in the world that sitll routinely circumcises for non-religious reasons.
Time to get with the program, USA...most countries don't alter their baby boy's bodies as if they're born with a defect that needs to be fixed.
BOTH female and male circumcision is unethical because it removes his/her right to choose. Only the owner of the genitals should be making this decision.
Both boys and girls deserve protection under the law.
Anyways, I'd like to respond to a few posters.
@Leah. 85% of men worldwide are uncircumcised and they do not have a higher amount of penis problems than American men, where 75% are circumcised.
If an adult man chooses it for himself, great, that's his own choice for his own body. I would want to leave my son the ability to make that choice if he so desires. Circumcised men can't go back.
Negative sexual stigma? That's laughable. Women don't care. Or, women who aren't shallow and uneducated don't care.
No, the head of the penis has 8000 nerve endings and the foreskin has 20,000. The foreskin in itself is extremely erogenous tissue, and it slides back and forth over the head of the penis, adding to the stimulation.
@Berd.
Female circumcision, while there are different forms, is usually the removal of the hood of the clitoris, a body part that is directly analygous to the foreskin.
YOU have your reasons for circumcision? Great, if you're for it, then you have your own body to slice up. Don't slice up someone else's body just because *you* think it's better. What matters is their own opinion, for their own body.
@ilovemyson.
Genital mutilation definition - "The cutting or excision of all or some of the genital organs, especially ritualistic."
It's a myth that uncircumcised are more likely to get HIV, AIDS, and UTIs.
The foreskin is more than "just skin"...it's an erogenous part of the penis containing 20,000 fine-touch and stretch nerve endings, and on an adult man is over 12 square inches once unfolded (it's a double layer). It's just as pleasurable to a man as a clitoris is to a woman.
However I agree that removing the clitoris is worse than removing the foreskin. However, this does not make male circumcision acceptable. Rape isn't justified because murder is worse, if you get my point.
WHAT? UTIs and HIV were originated from uncircumcised penises? That's laughable. It is a 100% myth that being circumcised prevents HIV. 85% of men in Europe are NOT circumcised and they have a LOWER rate of HIV than men in the USA, where 75% ARE circumcised.
The majority of men in the USA with HIV are actually circumcised.
As for UTIs, it's rare for men in the first place, and its cause has nothing to do with circumcision status.
Africa is a third world country, and most men there are circumcised. The countries that don't circumcise are actually usually the richer countries. Again, the USA is the only DEVELOPED country in the world that still routinely circumcises for non-religious reasons!
@ashley. "...worry about infection but i'm not cleaning my teenage sons penises for them."
So I assume you also -
-Extracted their teeth
-Shaved their hair
-Removed their fingernails
And more, because you don't want to have to brush their teeth for them or comb their hair for them or clip their nails for them, do you?!?
@Carrie - Eric was circumcised at birth.
As for "anteater", it's kind of sick that you had your son's penis altered so he would be more pleasing for you sexually. REALLY sick. Uncircumcised and circumcised penises look almost exactly the same erect. The only difference is that the head of a circumcised penis is grainy and calloused, and the head of an uncircumcised penis is shiny and smooth.

Why some countries/communities perform Female Genital Mutilation? What is the purpose? Is it not so cruel?
I am utterly shocked to know there are some communities/countries who practice Female Genital Mutilation by force to the girls. Is it related to their belief? Culture? Or mere abusive nature of man?
Answer: Despite how I feel towards the entire thing, I have to accept that it is apart of their culture. Although, from our point of view, the act seems inhumane and unorthodox, it is a commonly practiced custom in some parts of the world (not only Africa). The girls receiving the circumcision believe it to be a common act that comes with growing up.
Long ago I was told that before I pass judgment on their culture, consider my own. People believe that what is happening to these girls is mutilation, but male circumcisions are common in the United States and just as traditional in some households. I see where the person was coming from a bit, but believe that the large gap in medical practices and equipment makes the statement weak.

What is the difference between male circumcision and female genital mutilation?
other than that one is done on a boy and the other on a girl obviously
Also, why is one legal and the other illegal?
Answer: You can't make a blanket statement and say that one is worse than the other because there are many different types of both female and male circumcision.
The most common form of female circumcision, for example, removes the clitoral hood, which is anatomically analogous to the foreskin on a man. The most common form of male circumcision removes the foreskin.
The most extreme forms of female circumcision are, by far, the rarest. Same with male circumcision. There are types of female circumcision that not only remove the clitoral hood, but also the clitoris, inner labia, and the sewing shut of the outer labia. There are types of male circumcision that remove the entire head of the penis and some of the scrotum skin. Again, these types are both very, VERY rare.
And there are minor types, for female circumcision just a nick of the clitoral hood is done to draw a few drops of blood; for males, only the very tip of the foreskin is removed.
So you can see why, when comparing female and male circumcision, they should be compared by severity of the procedure. The common types of female circumcision relate directly to the common types of male circumcision; the extreme types of female circ relate directly to the extreme types of male circ, etc.
When some people compare female and male circ, they automatically compare the most extreme forms of female circumcision against the typical forms of male circumcision. This is an unfair comparison.
Not only that, but there are female circumcisions that are done in hospitals with doctors, and there are male circumcisions that are done by dragging adolescent boys into the bush and hacking at their genitals with dull rocks.
Both the clitoral hood and the foreskin are sexual tissue, and removing this tissue is always risky as there can be complication involved. It annoys me when people say, "well, girls die from circumcision" when answering a question such as yours. So do boys. About 500 boys per year in the USA die from neonatal circumcision -- and yes, I'm referring to healthy baby boys being circumcised by trained doctors.
Circumcision for both men and women also reduces sexual sensation and sexual function.
This is why male circumcision and female circumcision have zero difference (when compared accurately and fairly). I believe any sort of cosmetic alteration done to an unconsenting child is mutilation.
The main reason why male circumcision is legal in most countries (I believe there are one or two countries where it is illegal) is because it's practiced by a couple religious groups. Also because, especially in the USA, it's seen as culturally acceptable (although that mindset is changing, fortunately!)

Answer: You can say that the Western double standard on circumcision (illegal for girls, but legal for boys) is (like having a Violence Against Women Act but not a Violence Against Men Act, as one other example) merely yet one more indication of how insane Western countries are, and that Radical Islam is sane and reasonable by comparison.

Answer: I think its awful and I cannot understand why it would be done?
I have heard of a tribe in Africa that remove the clitoris and sew up the vagina before puberty so that the "husband" knows that she is a virgin and literally has to "break" her....and removal of the clitoris I guess so she gets no enjoyment from it?
I think its barbaric to be honest. We are made the way we are made and I dont understand why anyone would want to change it.

We were discussing this in my womens studies class the other day and we were really stuck on a good answer.... of course I dont agree with the process but at the same time we dont really have a right to impose our culture on them... My professor said that the UN is debating cutting funding to third world countries unless they stop genital mutilation, but again we kinda do the same thing with circumcision we just have better methods of doing it.

Answer: female genitalia mutilation impedes the function of female sexual arousal, it is used to restrict women into experiencing orgasm. Is Female genital mutilation and Male circumcision the same thing?
I know theyre both cruel.Other than that, how do they compare?
Answer: I can't BELIEVE the ignorance of some people on here.
First off, there are many different types of female circumcision. It is actually UNCOMMON for the entire clitoris to be removed. Typically, female circumcision removes the hood of the clitoris (the prepuce).
The most minor types range from a pinprick or nick of the genitals to draw blood. No amputation at all, just a quick blood-draw.
And the most major (this type is very VERY rare) removes the clitoris, clitoral hood, inner labia, and sews the outer labia together.
There are also different types of male circumcision. The most common removes the entire foreskin (the prepuce), which is anatomically analogous to the clitoral hood on a woman.
Other types of circumcision remove not only the foreskin, but also some shaft skin and scrotum skin.
And some cultures practice "subincisions" onto male children, which is a severe form of male circumcision in which the urethra is split and the underside of the penis is cut.
Can't you see how these major forms of male circumcision, correlate to the major forms of female circumcision?
I can't believe the people who are answering you are talking about a man's foreskin as if it's useless. It's not. It's a double-layer of skin containing 2/3rds of the total amount of nerve endings in the penis. It's sensitive, erogenous sexual tissue. The foreskin protects the penis AGAINST infection (like your eyelids protect your eyes) and also keeps the penis sensitive. The head of the penis is meant to be an internal organ, so when it's not protected by the foreskin it dries-out and loses sensitivity.
The foreskin is natural, normal, healthy, FUNCTIONAL, and meant to be there.
ALL forms of circumcision are mutilation. Male circumcision is more similar to female circumcision than most people think -- both remove healthy, functioning parts of the genitals for no medical reason, both reduce sexual pleasure, both have no medical benefits, both are harmful, both boys and girls have died from it or suffered extreme complications from it, both are done for the same reasons even, such as:
-Because mommy or daddy is
-Because it's just what's done in that society
-Because no man wants to marry an uncircumcised women/ no woman wants to marry an uncircumcised man
-To make the genitals look better
-To make the genitals healthier or cleaner
And by the way, it's absolutely 100% true that male circumcision was made popular in the USA as a means of preventing masturbation among pre-teen and teen boys.
Obviously we know that all those above reasons are RIDICULOUS. But people who circumcise their daughters justify it in the same ways as people who circumcise their sons.
I'm SICK AND TIRED of people blabbing on and on about the injustices of female circumcision in Africa, and then they turn around and inflict the exact same mutilation onto their sons.
EVERY baby or child deserves to be protected from genital mutilation, not just girls. Boys too.
edit; Kevin said:
"It has been documented spread of H.I.V and other sexual diseases is partly lower in regions where male circumcision is the cultural norm."
Europe has a very very low circumcision rate, and they also have one of the lowest rates of STDs and HIV in the world. Explain that? It has NOT been proven that circumcision reduces STDs or HIV, or has any other health benefits, for that matter.

is female genital mutilation common in North Korea?
FGM (female genital mutilation) is common in many strict muslim countries. Is it common in North Korea? Im asking because women are not treated well in the dictatorship of North Korea.
Answer: Female genital mutilation is far from common in North Korea. It directly opposes North Korean ideology as well as Korean traditional culture. And for a society as traditional as North Korea, disobeying such entrenched societal rules is extremely taboo. First off, North Koreans view themselves as the "cleanest" and most "pure" race. Having to mutilate oneself directly goes against that viewpoint. Why must the cleanest race mutilate themselves? Second, the North Koreans have a long history before them of Confucianism/Neo-Confucianism. Neo-Confucianism strictly forbids the body from being mutilated in anyway - that is why people in ancient Korean society did not cut their hair as the hair was a part of the body. Obviously this has changed but anything as drastic as female genital mutilation would be seen as a grave offense in North Korea.

How common is female genital mutilation amongst Muslims, and where it is done, what is its intended purpose?
Is it to destroy the womans sexual pleasure?
Answer: Look up female genital mutilation on Wikipedia:
"Amnesty International estimates that over 130 million women worldwide have been affected by some form of FGM, with over 2 million procedures being performed every year. FGM is mainly practiced in African countries. It is common in a band that stretches from Senegal in West Africa to Ethiopia on the East coast, as well as from Egypt in the north to Tanzania in the south. It is also practiced by some groups in the Arabian peninsula. The country where FGM is most prevalent is Egypt, followed by Sudan, Ethiopia, and Mali. Egypt recently passed a law banning FGM.
Whilst FGM is widely practiced out in the open by Africans of varied faiths, it is practiced in secrecy in some parts of the Middle East. In the Arabian peninsula, Types I and II FGM is usually performed, often referred to as Sunna circumcision especially among Afro-Arabs (ethnic groups of African descent are more likely to prefer infibulation). The practice occurs particularly in northern Saudi Arabia, southern Jordan, and northern Iraq (Kurdistan). In the Iraqi village of Hasira, a recent study found that 60 percent of the women and girls reported having undergone FGM. Before the study, there had been no solid proof of the prevalence of the practice. There is also circumstantial evidence to suggest that FGM is practiced in Syria and Kurdistan. In Oman, a few communities still practice FGM; however, experts believe that the number of such cases is small and declining annually. In the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, it is practiced mainly among foreign workers from East Africa and the Nile Valley.
The practice can also be found among a few ethnic groups in South America. In Indonesia, the practice is not uncommon among the country's rural women."

Why do so many muslims especially in Egypt practice female genital mutilation today?
They mutilate a young girls genitals so that they cannot enjoy sex.
Allah does not approve of this yet these insecure and controlling men and women still do this to their daughters.
Why does the Egyptian government step in and change this?
Answer: There are still religions and cultures where women are considered the property of men. They do it so the females will be faithful to their husbands because the act can be painful to them and they receive no pleasure. It is about men being in control. Men are in control of governments and religions that practice this.
