What is the model of psychiatry and mental health services in Canada?
In the U.S. psychiatry has turned into a medication-oriented discipline. Any psychotherapy offered is mostly cognitive-behavioral, and quite brief in duration. Finding a psychiatrist or mental health professional to discuss the big existential problems is next to impossible in the U.S. Im wondering if its like that in Canada as well since their healthcare system is different, or so I understand.
Answer: Same story in Canada. Health care is still "rationed", in a sense, as it is by managed care organizations in the USA. Medication is the first line approach (cheapest). Brief term modalities are second (2nd cheapest).

How does a managed care model of mental health reduce health care spending?
Answer: Managed care models accomplish this via strict rationing of health care services. For example, a managed care company may limit the number of outpatient sessions a given consumer can use to 20 per year or limit the number of covered inpatient days per episode to 3 (or require immediate release from inpatient care as soon as the patient is "stable", rather than paying for additional care that may actually result in significant improvement/cure).
Unfortunately, the health care rationing of managed care has backfired. It has resulted in a "revolving door" type system whereby patients present for MULTIPLE, short term treatments rather than one longer term (curative) one. Another frequent occurrence is that the limited number of covered outpatient visits result in increase used of INPATIENT (much more expensive) services.
Obama's plan is to socialize health care. This essentially means that the federal government becomes the world's largest managed care organization. Rationed health care for EVERYONE. The result will be massive spending, unfairly rationed care, decreased quality of care, and dissatisfied consumers AND providers (as has been the case with private managed care).

How realistic is it to expect health care workers to model mental, physical, and spiritual health?
If americans tend to be over-weight,under active, workaholics, who experience burnout- why should healthcare workers be any different
Answer: Yes, health care professionals are human and share the same problems as the rest of the population. It can be a bit annoying to hear you have to lose weight or cut out fats from your diet from an obese doctor or nurse, but that's their job--teaching preventative health measures to avoid illness. And it's even more annoying to have a skinny person who has no idea what it's like to be overweight tell you this!

Why is the medical model of mental illness so widely accepted despite scant evidence in its favor?
To paraphrase Stanton Peele, we are set on proving that mental illness is primarily biological despite our consistent failures to date to substantiate this. Big Pharma, anyone? There is no conclusive evidence whatsoever that there is anything physical anomalous about say, schizophrenics, and interestingly, the onset of schizophrenia typically occurs during the peak of ones physical prowess.
If diseases of the mind were literally diseases of the brain, wouldnt psychiatry be swallowed by neurology? Is mental illness a metaphor we have taken literally?
Answer: Hasn't science proved a schizophrenic brain has more activity in certain areas, and more degeneration, that it's basically like a circuit board that fires off when it shouldn't, and won't fire when it should? Hadn't they tied it to the body's regulation of insulin and dopamine?
Well, if they had, maybe one day neither psychiatrists nor neurologists will be treating those patients. Perhaps it will be an endocrinologist.
Frankly, I would be glad to have a psychiatrist caring for a schizophrenic relative or friend. They know how to "decode" the types of weird things they say when they're sick, and they know when to medicate or hospitalize them to keep other people safe from harm.
Mental illness doesn't just come from nowhere, like a god. So it must be organic. Even if certain ones are caused mainly by drug abuse. Still organic, coz it's the body's response to the changes occurring from what is introduced to the body.

Abnormal psychology question ? What are some "pros" and "cons" of the mental disorder as "disease" model?
Thesis Question: What are some "pros" and "cons" of the mental disorder as "disease" model? (Ultimately, I want to you choose a position relating to the topic, and defend that postion.)
I dont really understand what this question is asking ? If anyone could help me, Id greatly appreciate it, Thanks!
Answer: Some great answers have already been posted. :)
Another way to look at the question is that a "disease" model often implies that there is something wrong with the patient. Other models, instead, emphasize characteristics of the environment that contribute to the disorder, rather than internal characteristics of the patient. What are the implications of this?
Or, compare and contrast the term "mental disorder" with "mental health". One is a more preventive approach, while the other is more reactive.

Stanton Peele: Are Addiction and Mental Illness Really Brain Diseases?
That there is something inherent in the person to be found there -- in mental illness and addiction -- is received wisdom, not empirical fact. The belief derives from the assumption that these phenomena are medical diseases.
Examine the ways in which sociological accounts have sought to challenge the medical model of mental illness.?
Can some one help me write a 2,000 word essay on this please!
Answer: I'm afraid there's not an awful lot I know about this subject, still, here's what I can say.
The potential problem with a term such as mental illness is that turns a persons actions into simply a biochemical phenomenon to its ibservers, diverting their attention from other causes. Sometimes these causes might be socially-economically bound. For example, some have argued that certain sorts of depression might be the result of a modern society in which the alienation of lanour (to use Marx's phrase) makes people feel incapable of finding purpose in their everyday lives. I don't believe that's true, but I think it's a handy example.
Other examples might be the diagnoses of 'hysteria' in middle-class victorian women which, in some accounts, was actually the result of the oppressive lifestyle and gendered politics in which they lived. Again, I can't tell you if that's true or untrue, as I'm not an expert in the field.
So, in essence, sociological accounts of the causes of exceptional emotional disturbance - that is, attempts to explain disturbance in temrs of faulty or problematic social structures - challenge a model of mental illness that proposes the matter is simply of chemical imbalance and so forth.
Basically, that's what your essay will be about.
Look into 'hysteria' and 'depression/anomie' especially, not least the alleged rise of hysteria in the late 19th century and rise of depression in the 20th century. A fictional piece to look at might be 'The Yellow Wallpaper', written in 1891, that tackles the way that the responses of women to 19th century sexual order were (arguably) dismissed as the result of insanity.
It's only 6000 words, and you can find it on Project Gutenberg, here: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/1952

What do people think of the recovery model in mental health?
Answer: The recovery model is not a method of treatment, but an approach to treatment and the mental health sufferer, which demands of the sufferer that they believe in the possibility of recovery, of being able to lead a fulfilling life, as well as the professionals accepting the individual as a competent adult who is able to lead a fulfilling life. Many approaches (particularly such psychotherapeutic orientations as Self Psychology, Psychosynthesis, et al) have always worked from this assumption, but the recovery model is more particularly about applying this within psychiatric institutions, organisations and services. If the service holds firmly to the belief that the individuals can recover, this changes a great deal of how people are dealt with.
I think it's essential. We know, from research conducted over 30 years ago, that within education a child's performance is strongly correlated to whether the teacher believes that the child can do well. It is no different for adults, whether it's education or their own mental health at stake. We respond to the expectation of those around us. If they believe we can recover, that we contain within us the knowledge of how to recover and that the professionals' role is to facilitate that process, then almost every mentally suffering person will respond to this belief, over time.
