What would be some good names for a Goth shop?
I want to open a Goth shop targeted at both men and women in their mid-teens to early twenties. Itll have a wide variety of products that will appeal to everyone from cybers, rivetheads, even corp. Goths and perky goths. Im thinking something like:
Malice in Wonderland
Batty Cake
Rabbit Hole inc.
Dark Delicacies
Nu Threads
Dark Threads
Black Market
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Answer: Some goth shops I have been to...
"The Assylum"
"Dungeon"
and One called Exile.
I really like Malice in Wonderland.
I like Batty Cake too, because you could have a bat as your symbol. And I have a thing for bats. Weird, I know.
Masochist Mansion
Raving Lunatic
hahaha
Idk, I think I need sleep.

Why doesnt Yahoo! Answers want us to post truthful responses to their users questions?
I recently had an answer deleted and denied appeal because I gave a TRUTHFUL answer about someone who wanted a NEW iPod Touch for cheap. I just thought that everyone should know that Yahoo! Answers doesnt want your answers, they want your lies.

Answer: You don't say EXACTLY what your answer was, along with exactly what the question was. But it has NOTHING to do with whether or not something is truthful. If you were rude, or critical of the asker or even of the question... and more importantly... gave an opinion rather than specifically answering the question that was asked, then it's a violation. But, it wasn't Yahoo! Answers who was responsible for your answer receiving a violation. Other Yahoo! users, most likely 2 or more, report questions and answers that are removed for violations.

Are linkin park and avenged sevenfold sell outs?
Hello, this question is pretty much what is the difference between selling out and simply changing style.
When linkin park first started they were under the style "nu-metal" they were very successful the album hybrid theory was the 2nd most sold of the decade...when they released the album minutes to midnight they apparently "sold out" because they switched from nu-metal to alt rock..with a thousand suns they apparently sold out even more with a even more dramatic style change.
Linkin park have been mainstream since the start so how were they changing style to appeal to the mainstream audience or "selling out"...infact they sold less albums since they changed style.
Avenged sevenfold are also another band labled as "sell outs"...when they started their music had quite a bit of screaming and they didnt sound that great..with their album "city of evil" they changed style and got their first climpse of success with their next self titled album they cemented their place as a mainstream band sticking to a similar style as city of evil..
Due to them selling albums after the style change apparently they did it simply to sell albums and are labled sell outs...but i think their first two albums were terrible....and im not really a fan of them but their latest ones sound alot better..the first two albums to me sounded like they were trying to find their sound.
please leave your opinions if you think they sold out ...dont just say "they sucked since the start"
Answer: Judging by what I've been hearing and reading about from Linkin Park fans, it sounds like they did indeed sell out. Back before their last album was released, I heard their then-new single "The Catalyst" on the radio and it sounded like a pop song. When the radio DJ said it was Linkin Park I was thinking "Really!" lol.
Selling out doesn't have to mean appealing to a mainstream audience, it can mean appealing to an entirely different audience then the one they originally played for. In Linkin Park's case, it sounds like they went to playing music for the nu metal audience to the pop rock audience. It makes sense since we all know how big pop music is these days. And I'm not trying to be insulting to them, I'm just saying that's what I've ben hearing from their die-hard fans who were disappointed by their last album.
And as far A7X goes, their first two album were hardcore metal and then they switched to a heavy metal/hard rock sound by their third album (City of Evil) and by their fourth self-titled album, they aimed more towards hard rock and with their last album, it sounds like they're going back to heavy metal/hard rock like on City of Evil. Or at least for that album.
So yeah, I'd say A7X is merely evolving as a band. If they went from hardcore metal to mellow alternative rock, then I could see where they'd be sell-outs but that obviously isn't the case.
So Linkin Park: possible sell-outs, A7X: no.

Is this a good Appeal Statement for the college that rejected me?
To the University of Houston Admissions Board,
First off, I would like to thank you for this opportunity to re-evaluate my credentials. I feel confident that my case is worthy of reconsideration. At Lawrence E. Elkins High School, I finished with a 2.95 GPA and was in the 46th percentile of my class. Although my SAT scores were not as high as I thought, I am confident that I can prove myself at the University of Houston and make good grades. During the first two years of high school, I was not as focused and determined as I was my last two years, thus my GPA was not as high as I wanted. However, I feel that I have learned from my mistakes, I am willing to do whatever it takes to make top grades at UH.
In addition to school work, I have completed extracurricular activities and achieved some awards at Elkins. Since I have submitted my application, I have been rewarded with the 2008-2009 Elkins Varsity Football Gridiron Award, which is given to the player who defines Elkins Football through hard work, perseverance, and doing what is right on and off the field. I am extremely proud of myself for receiving this award and is honored that I stood out to my coaches. This award is a constant reminder of how hard work and dedication can be beneficial. While attending Elkins, I joined the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to get closer to God through my team, coaches, and peers. While with FCA, I helped in my community by creating blankets for the nearby retirement home during Christmas breaks. I plan on joining the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at UH.
The University of Houston is my number one choice to start and finish my college career. Being a Cougar is very important to me in many ways. Since my passion is football, I would like to become a student assistant for the Cougar football team. While being very much involved with the campus, I would like to become a student of the Department of Health and Human Performance. In addition to campus involvement and studies, I want to be a Cougar because nearly half of my extended family graduated from UH. My father was very involved at the University of Houston in the late 1970s with Sigma Nu Fraternity, and my two older sisters are currently attending UH and are very much involved with campus activities and the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority.
I thank you once again for your time and opportunity for re-evaluation. I wish to continue my higher education at the University of Houston. I hope to hear from you soon, Go COOGS!
Sincerely,

Should I go to an MBA program in Singapore (NUS) or one in Hong Kong (CUHK)?
What would be more appealing to an employer outside of Hong Kong/ SouthEast Asia or in the U.S.?
Answer: Wherever you go, make sure that if you took your courses outside of the US, that they will be accredited in the US.
It will be a waste of time if the courses you take in HK or Singapore are not recognized in the US.
The choice between HongKong and Singapore would be personal. For me, I would choose Singapore because it is a clean and orderly city, and most folks would talk to you in English. In HK, even if they know English, they will try your patience by talking to you in Chinese (Mandarin or FooKien)

What is the appeal of listening to nu metal?
Its been a long time since I listened to nu metal (sadly, I did back in like ninth/tenth grade). So what is the appeal of listening to nu metal, for those of you that still do listen to it?
Also, if you listen to nu metal, what do you think the feel the basic values of metal are? That is, what does metal seek to achieve?
And if you listen to actual metal, what do you feel the basic values of metal are?
Matt, I always feel it is best to understand where the opposition is coming from, so I can better argue against them. Hence this question, lol.

Help trying to find rap music I might like?
Hello, I am fifteen years of age and a primary fan of rock music, particularly but not limited to punk and metal. I grew up around rap music because my dad had just acquired a taste for it when I was very young and listened to it a lot when I was in preschool, in addition to the classic rock and heavy metal he grew up listening to. I would like to try and find rap that would appeal to me purely for the purpose of expanding my taste in music.
I mostly listen to classic rock and classic metal, about 80% of the music I like having been released at least 15-20 years ago. However, my recent acquisition if a taste for old Linkin Park and various nu metal bands such as Korn who incorporate turn tables in their music, and I figure I may as well give rap a try.
My favorite genre is classic metal, such as Judas Priest and Black Sabbath. Im also starting to get into a little death metal. But I also enjoy classic rock, hair metal, oldschool punk, grunge, 90s pop punk/skate punk, early nu metal, and some acoustic indie music. My favorite thing in music is guitar. Do you know of any rappers I might actually like? Preferably not sounding like douchebags on the radio like Lil Wayne and Kanye West. Lyrical talent is a necessity. Some sex/partying songs are okay, but I hate when thats all their songs are about.
Again, Im a fifteen year old girl looking to expand her musical horizons. Thanks for helping!

University of York(UK) or Newcastle uni??
I have a option to do, either the University of York or Newcastle University, my major is TESOL, postgraduate.
I have known that NU is better than York in linguistics and TESOL, however, York is more appealing to me for its location, history, etc. besides, it inclines with collegiate system, which is quite different from my guaduate study.
Would you please offer me some suggestion or give me some details about TESOL in these two universities? York or NU?
Thanks a lot!
Answer: Don't be swayed by York's' collegiate system, it isn't really much more than choosing your halls of residence, there isn't much intercollegiate competition and few intracollegiate clubs unlike at the older collegiate universities. As far as linguistics go, I know that both those unis are very good at the subject, separated by a hairs width really. Really it depends on whether you prefer a campus or a city. York is more of a campus university although it is very close to the city, Newcastle is IN the city, so it really depends on which enviroment you think you'd like best.

Metalheads - Do you feel as if elitism is entirely "bad" or does it have its helpful points?
Personally, I feel that a certain amount of elitism strengthens the metal community. Before you totally discount my opinion, hear me out....
First off, Im not saying that elitism to the max is the right way to go because its fairly narrow minded. So the "its not brutal enough to be metal!" argument isnt valid as a "good" form of elitism. Also, the "everything but metal sucks" point of view wouldnt be, either.
However, I feel that certain degrees of elitism concerning what should and shouldnt be considered metal is not only acceptable, but actually helps strengthen the metal genre by not allowing for a "watering down" effect by mainstream outlets. Lets look at nu metal as an example of a genre that was watered down. If you look at Korns first two albums, they were a bit on the harder side of things (within the rock genre). However, it wasnt until third album, which was definitely softer and more mainstream friendly than the two prior, that they got decent media attention. From that point, they proceeded to produce albums that were less and less intense. It cannot be argued that this was an isolated case, either - Slipknot, System of a Down, and Disturbed (the other large bands of the genre) all followed a similar pattern. Because the actions of these bands followed such a consistent pattern, I feel that their motives were based more in monetary gain than in personal preferences.
Because metal is a fairly withdrawn genre, most bands cannot hope to make any real profit, therefore helping to eliminate the desire to simply attempt to appeal to the mainstream masses by altering their sound. (of course, there are cases of this still, as I believe was the case with Cryptopsy and their latest cd) Also, by having certain definitions of what constitutes metal, I feel that it helps to preserve the various subgenres in metal. I mean, how many recent day Grunge bands are big hits with their perspective fan base since Grunge hit its "prime"? (I apologize in advance if theres some large Grunge following that I am unaware of) Now, how about in Death Metal? I can think of numerous bands that have formed since DMs most popular years that continue to garner much recognition within the metal fan base.
As for correcting people who falsely call something metal, I think it has more to do with principle than with claiming that metal is above other genres. Hmm, lets go with an analogy on this one. If I said that Scottish men wore skirts, would not someone correct me and tell me its actually a kilt? In other words, even if it may appear to be something to someone, that does not necessarily make it so.
For the definitions of what should be considered metal and what shouldnt be, I base my opinions on what I consider to sound like "metal". Thus, I dont consider nu metal or glam metal to be metal. I do, however, consider most -core genres and bands metal (theres a few bands in metalcore that lean a little too close to rock for me to consider them metal). But, thats just my opinion so I acknowledge that other metalheads may have different ones (although Ill certainly defend mine if its called into question).
So, the short side of this is I feel that while unadulterated elitism is narrow minded, a certain degree of elitism in regards to the definition of metal actually helps to keep metal alive and free from mainstream marketing influence.
BQ - Would you listen to a band that was really good, but had racist lyrics?
Flyinghigh, perhaps my analogy was a poor one. How about calling a stick a house because both of them are made out of wood just as how two genres may share similar instruments?
Killer Peaches, Ive got to go do some stuff, but Ill reply to you in a bit.
Okay, Peaches, here we go....
By watering down, I simply mean attempting to please larger numbers of people for purely monetary gain. I do NOT mean the fusing of metal with other genres or the simple act of "softening" ones music. Im a big fan of Folk Metal which is oftentimes softer than even hard rock - yet, it is still definitely metal.
Now let me explain my reasoning towards nu metal. I said that I feel it more closely resembles hard rock rather than metal. So lets compare Slipknot to Staind, a band that is definitely hard rock.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuAC9YIC2Bs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDcwBWWKGIs
Slipknot definitely has a faster song, but otherwise, I find them to be fairly similar. 1:56 on the Slipknot vid definitely reminds me of the Staind song, for example. They also have relatively similar vocal styles. Sorry, but not being a musician, I cant give you a great deal more than merely what it sounds like to me. And, to me, nu metal sounds more like hard ro
And, to me, nu metal sounds more like hard rock than metal. you can also see in Coal Chambers Loco how the base usage in nu metal is quite similar to hard rock.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-sYWaOrLdI
Lets go with an analogy real quick. I know you listen to Folk Metal. But, do you consider it to be folk music or metal? The majority of it is definitely more metal than folk, even though it bears the resemblance of folk music. I know I certainly wouldnt call Ensiferum folk music. Similarly, I wouldnt call nu metal actual metal for while it has some characteristics of metal (say, slightly faster drums), it has far more in common with hard rock.
As for mainstream influence, I know it will always be there. Im just saying that with a bit of self regulation, it wont have as great of an effect on bands with regards to altering their sound to simply appeal to the greatest amount of people. Now for gateway bands. Lets take my own introduction to metal. I had been listening to nu meta
I had been listening to nu metal and rock for awhile, but I knew that it definitely wasnt actual metal (with the exception of early Metallica, but they were more aligned with rock in my mind at the time). Thus, when I wanted something more aggressive, I picked up some LoG cds that my friend had burned me because I knew they were "metal" and therefore more aggressive than what I was listening to. If I had been told simply that Slipknot or Korn were "metal" (since I didnt know of all the sub genres of metal), I would probably have assumed that they were about the heaviest that most music got. If I had assumed that, I probably wouldnt have branched into metal and Id most likely still be dwelling in the rock genre (or possibly punk - Ive got a bit of an appetite for it that I havent heavily explored), especially since the -cores (that are sometimes viewed as gateway genres) dont really appeal to me (then or now). So, while gateway bands are important, I feel that it is best to prope
So, while gateway bands are important, I feel that it is best to properly classify them, be they a lighter form of metal (say, some Melodeath like In Flames Clayman album) or be they outside the metal genre (as in nu metal).
As for any perceptions that Im suggesting that we kick out any "metal" that "sucks", this is not the case. I acknowledge that there is shitty metal just as there is poor bands in any genre. Just as I wouldnt claim that Beethoven is metal simply because he has great music, I am not advocating rejecting bands or genres simply because they suck. However, if a genre is not metal (even if it bears some semblances), then I say it should not be considered metal. Heres an analogy - if I found someone that I didnt know but were of German ethnicity and had my last name, I wouldnt call them family simply because they share a few things in common with me.
Answer: Oh, i totally understand you. Its like whenever a metal head meets another metal head in the beginning they might hate each other because one thinks that one's metal is better than the other persons metal. Then they start talking and sometimes they end up becoming friends, happens a lot especially with guys, when its a girl, guys are just surprised a girl likes metal. Anyways, this happens often because of all the new ex-emo bands that are trying to get into metal because for what i've seen metal is starting to become popular again so their fans follow them. I think all metalheads are elitist to a certain point and i really dont see anything wrong with it. I know i'm elitist and its because i dont like people that call themselves metal when they really arent. I see Metal a culture and to be proud of your culture you have to know your roots and many people dont know the roots of metal. They dont know who slayer is, or who Death was and only heard the name Ozzy Osbourne because they heard about the Ozzfest. They probably just got into metal because the emo scene is dying and started listening to Avanged Sevenfold and to think about themselves as metal.
I really dont know where i'm going with this. I guess its just my justification towards my elitism. I dont know, i see it as a way to identify true metal heads from the ones that see it as a fad.
