Answer: is she a native hebrew speaker? because if she is she needs to get her grammer checked!

ani = I
ahava = love (noun not verb)
atah = you (but the wrong form of you for what she wants to say)
le'olam = to the world (but it should be la'olam)

What does the Hebrew word "olam" mean?
I believe that is how it is spelled. I read somewhere that if Moses wanted to indicate epoch days of Creation he would have used this word because it means or indicates a longer period of time.
I wasnt sure either way, so I thought Id ask...
Thanks.
Answer: Olam עוֹלָם has more than one meaning. It can mean "world." It is also used to mean "universe." But when combined with certain prepositions, the meaning changes:
L'olam - forever, ever and never (in the future tense)
me'olam - from eternity, ever & never (in the past tense)

What are the similarities and differences of the Myths Genesis and The Walum Olam?
gfreterteter
Answer: I hadnt heard of the Walum Olam but I am currently doing a study in comparing Greek, Hawaiian and Genesis creation stories so I thought I might know what to look for- here are my observations:
Similarities:
-The beginning of earth is dark and formless in Walum Olam like it is in the bible- primordial chaos!
-it also includes a flood story
-the serpent in Walum Olam- very biblical :)
-Unlike many other polytheistic religions, both of these have the Gods being there from the very beginning, not emerging from the emptiness.
-Both Manito and God created by "the word"
Differences:
-The glaringly obvious one is that Manito is evil, while God is meant to be good.
-Not a huge focus on the creation of humans- doesnt particularly describe it as far as I can see, it was an important part of the bible.
-I didnt read it in great detail but it seems there was no splitting apart of earth and sky (???) as there usually is in myth.
-Also many of the minor differences can be acocunted for by cultural differences

What can you tell me about "tikkun olam" and how can we repair the world?
Answer: There is a concept in Judaism called " Tikkun Olam" meaning in Hebrew, repair or perfecting of the world.
Judaism teaches that humanity's role is to work with each other to help God with perfecting and restoring or repairing anything out of harmony, any and all injustice or opression, any poverty, sickness, etc. Our walk with Hashem is more about deed than creed.
I shall try to explain how this works. It isn't about earning a ticket into heaven. It is about fulfilling what we believe our purpose for existence is all about and how we achieve connection to one another and to Hashem ( God)
Whatever behaviors one does repeatedly, become habit and thus the "nature" of the person. If you repeatedly act in greedy, thoughtless or hateful ways, or allow impulsive and rash emotional choices rule you those become habit and you reinforce this. It becomes HARD to do the right thing because you have made it easy to choose the "wrong" way..to separate yourself from the Divine as well.
If you live and act in a manner that fulfills this purpose of connection to the Divine source and make it the habit..the awareness of this connection grows and making wise decisions that are not harmful to self and others and benefit "tikkun olam" are reinforced and thus "become habit".
This is going to be a very different explanation than the perspective from one who belongs to a faith that teaches them that " works" mean nothing. Torah teaches that it is how we live that shows what we believe and that the purpose of our covenant is to be a light unto the nations as an example of how to connect to God. As in ancient days, Tikkun Olam is how that is achieved.
The most modern and broadly understood notion of tikkun olam is that of "repairing the world" through human actions. Humanity's responsibility to change, improve, and fix its earthly surroundings is powerful. It implies that each person has a hand in working towards the betterment of his or her own existence as well as the lives of future generations. Tikkun olam forces people to take ownership of their world. It is them, not G-d, who will bring the world back to its original state of holiness.
More simply, it is important for Jews to participate in repairing the world by participating in tzedakah (justice and righteousness) and g'milut hasadim (acts of loving kindness). Without their stake in the improvement of their environment, injustice and evil will continue to exist.
As the prophet Micah so succinctly stated : What does God require of you, Do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with your God.
Practice living as if you are in partnership with God in perfecting the world and then one day you'll understand that is exactly what you were doing :)

A CD with different versions of Adon Olam?
Is there a CD out with different versions of Adon Olam? If you know of one, do you know where I can order it?
While Im here, can anyone recommend a CD with the WHOLE song Maoz Tzur on it? Im looking for something with all 6 verses in Hebrew, nothing in English. Thanks!
(I know that this isnt really Tourism / Israel, but this is probably where Ill get the best answer.)
Answer: Hi Amy.
Jumping into this fray although I can't help with the CDs. Gotta love the South American accent in the 2nd link posted by UltraN. (I did notice that the Spanish transliteration of the Hebrew isn't reliable.) People may also enjoy the same tune as posted on the site of the melody's composer, Uzi Hitman (may his memory be for a blessing). http://uri.webpoint.co.il/uzi-Hitman/welcome.html (When the site loads, Hitman's version of Adon Olam plays in the background.)
Many different melodies for this prayer are in the Piyut archive in Jerusalem. http://www.piyut.org.il/cgi-bin/search.pl?Expression=adon+olam&lang=en&x=31&y=7

Is the Jewish afterlife (Tikkun Olam) more like the Christian afterlife or the Muslim afterlife?
I know that the Christian afterlife ("heaven") everyone is turned into spirits that pretty much are one with angels and God, and in the Islamic afterlife ("jannah") everyone gets human bodies and sits in palaces and gardens physically, but whats the Jewish heaven like?
And isnt it that Jews go to the good-afterlife 12 months in advance of non-Jews?
Answer: answer: last part first - no. All who are righteous go to G-d before the non-righteous. Jew or not.
there are many views because the afterlife isn't described in Judaism. Most Jews don't focus on the afterlife, they let G-d worry about that. Jews focus on the here-and-now: keeping G-d's commandments, studying Torah, caring for others and helping to repair the world.
Some Jews believe that when someone dies and they are righteous, they go to join G-d immediately. If they aren't righteous they spend a short time away from G-d.
Some Jews believe that we enter a sleep-like state until the Messiah/Messianic age and then join in the new world to come.
Some Jews believe in reincarnation until the Messiah/Messianic age or until one becomes righteous enough to join G-d.

Tell me your interpretation of the Jewish principle Tikkun Olam?
Answer: The concept of 'Tikkun Olam' is actually a Kabbalistic concept that has been co opted by the secular humanist leaning branches of Judaism.
The original concept in Kabbalah is that the world that we live in as well as the set of spiritual worlds that it is part of, are as a whole called the "world of tikkun" (correction). This is opposed to the "World of Tohu" (chaos) which originally existed before the world of Tikkun. (We see this hinted to in the second verse of Genesis. It says "and the world was Tohu, Vavohu, Vachoshech. This is usually translated to mean empty, and void and darkness. It is actually referring to the set of worlds called Tohu which existed before our world of Tikkun.
According to the Kabbalist, the world of Tohu had such strong light that the world shattered and the shards of the 'vessels' which were to channel the light fell down to our world of tikkun. They are now hidden in all manner of physical things. The job of the Jewish people is Tikkun Olam. That means to be scattered around the world, interacting with the world according to the dictates of the Torah.
The Torah tells us what is permitted and what is forbidden. The Hebrew word for permitted is Mutar. Mutar literally means 'unbound'. That is to say, when the Torah tells us something is permitted, it is telling us that we have the power to release the spark of Tohu from that thing. The Hebrew word for forbidden is 'asur' which means 'bound up'. That is to say that there are items in this world which have a spark of Tohu in them, but it is too tightly bound up for us to be able to release it. If we engage those things, we only waste our energy.
When the Jewish people have finished their job elevating all of the sparks that are hidden all over the world, the world of Tohu will be repaired and will be much stronger than it was before. This will stop the blockage which conceals the divine light from being revealed to us in its entirety. The time when that will happen is known as the 'time of the redemption' or the 'time of Moshiach'.
This topic is very involved and forms the core for a whole body of study in Judaism. If you are interested in studying more, I will point you to some websites. I only wanted to demonstrate to you, that when liberal forms of Judaism go around using the world 'Tikkun Olam', they really don't know what they are talking about.

Can someone share something to me about Tikun Olam?
I know is the repair of the world but in your own words, what is it to you?
UltraN it is not a sh*tty world in which we live in. It is a beautiful world in which we are blessed to be in, we can only make it better by appreciating it.
Answer: Tikkun Olam which is the healing and repairing of the world.
To me it is about our world we live in. Making it a better world for all of G-d's creation to live in and enjoy... Just the way our creator intended it to be.

To Practicing Jews - Will Messianics be in Olam Ha-Ba "The Afterworld"?
I just saw a question asking if Atheists and Jews will go to heaven. Of course that is a very deep question, and to answer it here would be doing injustice to the matter.
So I have an easier question to Jews. Per the Talmud, will Messianic Jews be in Olam Ha-Ba?
Answer: The first mishnah in chapter chelek (Chapter 11 in the Vilna edition, Chapter 10 in other editions) in masechta Sanhedrin lists various groups of people, followed by various individuals, that lose (or lost in the case of the individuals mentioned) their place in the world to come. Some of the categories there include:
an apikoros
a Jew who studies from books of other religions to learn how to worship and pray
Now, "messianic jews" are considered to be apikorsim as they have incorporated another religion into Judaism. In addition, they read from Christian scriptures as part of their religion, incorporating it into their worship. Thus "messianic jews" fall into two of the categories of people that are denied a place in the world to come.
Note: These categories only apply to Jews and no to non-Jews. Thus it is only the small fraction of Jews that have been tricked into converting by th emissionaries in "messianic judaism" that this would apply to. The non-Jews in the movement would be judged as non-Jews- but those that have been involved in converting jews away from Judaism would be considered to be a meizid (enticer) and would loose their place in the world to come.
