NEWS ASIA-PACIFIC: Malaysia issues fatwa on ghosts
Genies are also a target of the decree [AP]
A Malaysian museum has closed an exhibition on supernatural beings after Islamic religious authorities issued a fatwa, or decree, against it, state media have reported.
The National Fatwa Council had ruled on Thursday that exhibitions on ghosts, ghouls and supernatural beings were forbidden, as they could undermine the faith of Muslims.Abdul Shukor Husin, the councils chair, was quoted as saying that "supernatural beings are beyond the comprehension of the human mind." "We dont want to expose Muslims to supernatural and superstitious beliefs," the Berita Harian newspaper quoted him as saying.
Mythical attractions
Thousands of visitors had attended musuem in the western state of Negri Sembilan since it launched the ghost and genie exhibition on March 10, due to run until May 31.
Its curator had previously resisted calls from Malaysias arts minister and a religious leader for it to be shut down amid criticism that encouraging a belief in ghosts was un-Islamic.

What really bothers me is the coincedence of words and phrases used on this forum and on televison. As in:
"UnIslamic"--UnChristian
"We dont want to expose Muslims to supernatural and superstitious beliefs,"-- We dont want to expose our children to supernatural and superstitious beliefs,"
"They could undermine the faith of Muslims."--Atheists or Pagans could undermine the faith of Christians.
Its what you might call a theorcy script.
Answer: Oh my Stars!!! I hope that would never happen!! Can you imagine it? We would loose holidays such as Samhain(Halloween_) etc because heaven forbid pagans being allowed to celebrate!! We would be thrown back into the dark ages, and probably thrown into jail for our beliefs!! No more celebrating our holidays the way we like to (even the christians would have their day dictated) No more cricket on the beach for us Aussies!!!
Our kids little brains would be assaulted in schools, and they would come home with bruised knuckles for forgetting a word from the lords prayer or something similar!!
Oh could you imagine what would happen to some poor young girl should she become pregnant out of wedlock!
We have taken hundred of years to break free of the chains that bound us tightly, let us hope that it never happens again!!
Did you hear about the top cleric or whatever a (muslim leader is called) said here in Australia? He publicly declared that women deserved to be raped because of the way they dress... here is one article...
********************************************************************
Muslim cleric: 'Uncovered meat' to blame for rape, adultery
Australia's top Muslim cleric described immodestly dressed women as "uncovered meat" and blamed them for driving men to adultery and rape, according to news reports.
In an address last month, The Australian says Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali told 500 followers: "If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats or the uncovered meat? The uncovered meat is the problem."
The sheik then said, according to the paper: "If she was in her room, in her home, in her hijab, no problem would have occurred."
Prime Minister John Howard told the paper he condemns the remarks. "The idea that women are to blame for rapes is preposterous. I not only reject the comments, I condemn them unconditionally," he said.
These are not the first inflammatory remarks from the cleric. During a 2004 appearance in Lebanon, he said "September 11 is God's work against oppressors," according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
Update at 8 p.m. ET: Muslim leaders decided Thursday night to ban the cleric from sermonizing at the Lakemba mosque for several months, Australian media are reporting Friday morning, including The Age in Melbourne. No other action will be taken against Hilali, who the group says was "misinterpreted."
**************************************************************
Luckily not all muslims agreed with him, he was shunned by his own people and eventually run out of the country....
Extremists, in any religion should have no rights to affect how we live our lives!
Thankfully in my country, common sense still prevails....
Cheers!

Malaysian employment?
How many of you guys came across employment opportunities these days with employers who post such requirements?
Female, 18yrs, Speak Mandarin, SPM, ... (and whatever requirements), and last words... CHINESE ONLY (in capital and bold, for example).
Or...
Gaji Lumayan! Peluang pekerjaan terbuka untuk rakyat Malaysia berumur 18 tahun keatas, MELAYU/BUMIPUTERA SHJ.
I take these kinds of advertisements a little too personal since they advertise it on major newspaper agencies (go check your NST, Star and Berita Harian) and sometimes hang these employment opportunities for CERTAIN RACIAL REQUIREMENTS on their front doors.
Do other Malaysians feel this way too? As mentioned, I take it a little too personal because I am not Chinese, Indian nor a Malay and I feel as if my rights as a Malaysian-born citizen being taken away or if you like it, being treated like an outcast simply because I am not their wanted race for employment.
Have you ever experienced this?
Anderson you have your point, but in reality I disagree strongly (this is in fact, a very common Malaysian excuse).
1)They really need some one who knows and read chinese ---There are MANY Malays and Indians these days graduated from Chinese schools. They CAN read and converse fluently in Chinese. Try telling this to any Malay or Indian from Penang, they speak Hokkien like any other Chinese!
2) They customers/ market may be not convinent for others race, eg. halal bussiness or non halal bussiness ---Ive seen many Malays working as bartenders and check out girls at Carrefour, they handle non Halal products too. This is another excuse. Handling non Halal products are allowable under religious requirements since they are not consuming them. Most of these requirements are also posted on drivers, accounting and other positions too, you know?
3) You dont sent a malay sales guy to sell chinese stuff (apply on certain products) ---I still dont see this as a valid reason!
LOL Pengayap, nice one! I get you... hahaha
Answer: It is unethical. It's reality. I have seen these ads too. Bumiputra only, chinese only. Preferably bumiputra, preferably chinese. It can be disheartening for those people who are more than qualified but couldnt get the job due the colour of skin. The reason why they did this is to save everybody's time. Theirs and the applicants. But by doing this, goes to show how racist malaysian can be. Whatever happen to equal opportunity?
My point of view on this matter is that, it isnt healthy to only employ one particular race. We will lose out on idea opportunities. One race behave the same, one race thinks the same. One race same ideas. Do u also know that certain companies have racial quota?
Being a bumiputra myself, i will never respond to ad that says 'bumiputras are encourage to apply'. It sounds like a death trap to me. It drives me crazy being in an all malay environment. (I have been in one once, it was a nightmare - and never again.. the gossips and the laid back attitude drove me up against the wall). Of course not all malay companies are like that but once bitten twice shy right? Besides, it will be a joke to get a job just to fill up a racial quota instead of merit and experience. Duhh!!

But Kamaruddin Siaraf, Negeri Sembilans state secretary and chair of the state museum board, said the exhibition was terminated after the National Fatwa Council ruled against such events.

Answer: Wait - is your question should Christians in the US (or elsewhere) have the same authority as Islam does in Malaysia?
That's an easy one: HECK NO!!!!!!!!!
I would not choose to live in a society where ones code of law was dictated by any religion.
In the US 'freedom of religion' means just that - I'm not hurting anyone with my beliefs and it doesn't make me less of a human being because I don't agree with the theology of the majority. The US is not, as right wing fundamentalists like to believe, Christian-ruled, Christian-run, or Christian-founded.

QUESTION: Who chopped the cherry tree?
Legend has it that George Washington, Americas first president, chopped down a cherry tree in his youth. George
gives the tree a good swing and chops it down with an axe. His father sees the damaged tree and asks his son if he
knows who did the deed. George is quoted bravely admitting the truth :- "I cant tell a lie, Pa; you know I cant
tell a lie. I did cut it with my axe."
How are you going to answer if you are the one? Here some tips, based on answers by our politicians :-
PM Badawi - I did not cut down the tree, I was just taking a nap underneath it.
DPM Najib Abdul Razak - I swear that I have never MET that tree.
Hishammuddin Hussein - … but I only own a keris, not axe, how to cut down the tree.
Dr. Mahathir - Apa nama cherry tree, I chopped it down because, I dont like the idea of Pak Lah sleeping under it.
Chua Soi Lek - Yes, it was me, I resign as caretaker of this orchard.
VK Lingam - It could be me, it might have been me but I dont think its me.
Anwar Ibrahim - I DID NOT do it, and I am not giving any DNA samples for you to plant on the axe handle.
Khir Toyo - the new state government should just trim the grass and not waste time asking who cut the tree.
Ahmad Said (Terrenganu MB) - I chopped it because cherry trees are more expensive to maintain than durian trees.
Azalina Othman - The cherry tree is not included under my tourism MOU so I cut it down. Besides there were
unauthorized signboards put up around the tree.
Shabery Cheek - I challenge you to a debate on tree cutting.
Samy Vellu - I chopped it because Hindraf members were using it as a meeting point
Wira Ali Rustam - We have planted durian trees for 50 years and we will plant them for another 50 years, we do
not need cheery trees, apple trees, pear trees and all these other foreign trees.
Rais Yatim - You must see the bigger picture, Ahmad said cherry trees are expensive to maintain, Ali Rustam said
that are against our national identity and I needed to test my new axe, so you see, its a WIN-WIN situation all around.
Shahrir Samad - I cut the tree because we could no longer afford to subsidise it.
Karpal Singh - The bigfoot creature did it.
Bung Mokhtar - The big monkey did it
Pandikar Amin Mulia - There is nothing in the standing orders against chopping cherry trees. Kinabatangan duduk,
Bukit Gelugor duduk. Sit down.
Khairy Jamaluddin - I did not do it, neither did the Mat Rempits. By the way, whats a cherry tree?
Lim Kit Siang - (In response to Khairy) Cherry tree also you dont know, you are an insult to Oxford!
Nazri Aziz - Racist, racist, racist, when we cut down durian trees nobody made a fuss.
Malaysian Citizens - Oh for heavens sake! Somebody plant something before we all starve to death.
And this is how newspapers/websites in Malaysia will report this in their front page headlines.
The Star - Cherry Tree cut down, BN Govt defends action, blames Opposition "hidden" agenda.
The NST - PM and DPM believes Cherry Tree Massacre meant to cause racial disharmony
Utusan Malaysia - Kerajaan memberi amaran kepada pembangkang "Jangan menyentuh hak istimewa pokok ceri
yang tumbang."
