Answer: The republican party is still an intellectual party. I particularly like their stance on state's rights and limiting taxation. Now while I understand your frustration with the tea party and others you would call "anti-science", mostly this has been caused by the scientists themselves. Lets look at 2 examples. Evolution and abiogenesis. I think evolution and not ID should be taught in school, but when scientists like Dawkins, make absurd declarations, like science disproving God, the scientists have no longer shown unbiasedness. They have declared war on theist religion. The backlash that we see, should be expected, and the scientists should act more circumspect. AGW - There is certainly warming and warming caused by man. We should certainly be working towards lowering the amount fo CO2 placed into the atmosphere. However when idiots go and make assinine claims of the end of the world as we know it by 2050, the scientists do not correct those assinine statements. Nor do they correct the statements that these are "facts" and the debate is over. The amount of warming man can cause is certainly not a closed debate. They do, however, make bold claims of people being idiots and even references to holocaust deniers, when people make claims against AGW, even if those claims are mostly correct. An example of one that is mostly corect is that we cannot say for certain that man is responsible for most of the warming we are seeing. This is correct because of the 0.74 degree of warming in the last 100 years, man can only be responsible for a portion of 0.4. Meaning we have already accounted for alomost 50% of the warming due to non-man related causes. Would it be altogether surprising to find that once the factors are better understood, we are only responsible for 0.35 degrees of warming to the climate scientists? Probably not. Now when scientists are showing bias and speaking with much more certainty than permissible by science, should you not expect a backlash? It is nothing more or less than karma, and the scientists should be better policing themselves and work on how they interact with the media. But I also have not liked the fact that the repub party has not been good about individual rights like gay marraige, pro-choice, and no torturing. Over all a balance is always maintained, the more the scientists act outside of their fields of expertise and make outrageous claims, the more you will see people objecting to what they say. The more you see people asking for increases in the size of the government, the more you will see people objecting to the increases. Why do you think the tea party has just recently become so popular and vocal? The dems use to show more concern for the little people, but have been asking for more and more regressive taxes without asking for a lowering of taxes for the middle class and poor. Perhaps they should get back to their roots as well.

I am trying to figure out how much it costs to drill an oil well in associated costs. Not the actual costs associated with the filing and the leases and the drilling, the extra costs such as property reclamation, fighting legal environmental legal challenges, handling the environmental terrorism, extra security to avoid the terrorism and all of the other associated costs. Once you get a lease you have to fight a legal battle to implement it and I just want to understand the costs associated with that battle. I posted some links to typical legal battles. I have been told that environmental groups like the Sierra Club have challenged every single attempt at drilling for oil. My understanding is the litigation issues are one of the primary reasons that oil companies fail to drill wells on leases that they have obtained. I would love to get an understanding of the costs. Truthfully I could care less if we ever drill another oil well. I think ocean based algae farming for bio fuels is the best choice for our future coupled with plasma gasification to reduce landfill. But I dont argue issues based on what I want, I research issues based on the issue and with litigation being a primary reason oil wells are not being drilled I would like to understand the litigation costs. I guess a better question is why doesnt anyone know the answer and why dont people care?

For example, Rep Edward Markey (D-Mass) just introduced HR 39, a bill to keep the restrictions on obtaining badly needed oil from Alaska, permanent. To date, he has 148 co-sponsors. That's right, 149 members of the US House of Representatives are on board, keeping us from getting oil out of Alaska, permanently. Now you know why we are paying these prices. Rep Markey and his pals are taking care of the big oil companies.
