~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A magnitude 9.0 earthquake hit northern Japan on March 11, triggering tsunamis that caused widespread devastation. The tsunami swallowed everything in its path. The earthquake triggered an extremely destructive wave of up to 10 meters high that struck Japan minutes after the quake, in some cases traveling up to 10 km inland with smaller waves reaching many other countries after several hours. The National Police Agency in Japan has officially confirmed 9,301 deaths, 2,722 injured and 13,786 people missing across eighteen prefectures. These numbers are expected to increase, with casualties estimated to reach tens of thousands.
Japan has always been at constant threat of an earthquake. Usually the people are prepared and know what to do when an earthquake hits them. However, no one in Japan was expecting anything of this magnitude. People in Japan are still at awe as to what has happened. Many families were broken up and they have no contact of each other. It’s been nearly two weeks since the quake hit and many people are still missing or feared dead. Relatives or close friends of a missing person can access the Google People Finder: 2011 Japan Earthquake to search for a loved one.
Many countries are doing their part to help Japan out in its darkest hour. Search and rescue teams from numerous countries have been sent down to assist the Japanese people. Singaporeans alike are concerned about their relatives or friends living in Japan and amongst these concerned groups of people, Siti Omairah, 15, Junyuan Secondary School. She said that “I found out about the earthquake through the news and I was devastated. I have a lot of close friends and some relatives living there.”
Omairah said that her family has already made plans before the quake to travel to Japan during the June holidays. She said “My family will still press on with our plans to visit Japan, earthquake or no earthquake.” She noted that most of her relatives were far away from Fukushima and Sendai.
With so much of worries piling up on the shoulders of the Japanese people will they be able to come out of this horrific disaster? Japan’s quake has not only destructed lives but changed the world economy. “One earthquake can really change so much in so little time but, I believe that the Prime Minister, Naoto Kan, will help resolve this problem and bring Japan back to its feet.
Many Singaporean teens are doing their part to help Japan by donating to donation boxes. One of which can be found in 7-11 stores. Omairah added that she follows her family and donates her savings at any donation spot she sees. She also said “Whatever you donate can go a long way in helping rebuild the lives of the Japanese People.”
Can I go to Japan with a Mexican Passport?
OK Im a Mexican citizen (i was born in mexico) but i live in Australia. Im not an Australian citizen yet, i need wait till August the 8th 2012 to get my citizenship. Im currently in year 12 (2011) and I wanted to go to japan during the summer holidays (December) 2011. Can i still do so with my Mexican passport?
or should i wait until Im an Australian citizen? thanks
Answer: YES you can go with your Mexican Passport, but you will need to get a TEMPORARY VISITOR's status (aka TOURIST VISA) to visit Japan. You can apply at the Japanese Embassy/Consulate in AUS. The process can be a pain sometimes with all the required paperwork you have to produce. But "YES" it is possible as long as you get all your paperwork approved.
If you wait and become a AUS Citizen and have a AUS Passport, no Visa, no paperwork is required to visit.
How to stop jealousy?
Ive a work colleague who started in the same job as me shortly after I joined and used to be not liked at all by our co-workers and she was close to losing her job because she was lousy at it. She also had a lot of weird habits (bragging incessently, talking over people) that meant she was generally unpopular. Anyway at first I just thought the same as everyone else but then it happened that the two of us were put in the same (bad) situation at work where we had to rely on each other to improve our situation. During that I got to know her better and got to like her so I decided to help her. I tutored her on lots of stuff and gave her advice about how to change her behaviour and how people might misinterpret her current way of communicating and not like her. Basically I was gentle but honest and helped her to change. At the same time since I was quite popular at work I made sure I stuck up for her when people were slagging her off behind her back and I tried to change their opinons of her by telling them how hard she was trying etc... so now about a year later she has done a 180 - everyone loves her and she is very popular which at first I was very glad about..
The trouble is now weve had a few situations where she has basically stolen ideas I have discussed with her and announced them as her own. Maybe not the whole idea but she has expanded on something I said and if I hadnt have said it then I know she wouldnt have had the idea.. Also a couple of times it has felt like she stitched me up at work.
Now I know its childish and I try to just be happy that she is liked and that she likes my ideas/advice but I cant help feeling totally screwed over. The final straw came today. Even though it doesnt directly affect me she has stolen another of my ideas.. I told her how I was saving to go to Japan late 2011 as it was somewhere I had always dreamed of going and its a really unusual destination for holidays from the UK.. and now guess what.. she bought tickets there today for mid 2011. I know that doesnt directly affect me but it kind of takes the shine off it.. when its something I have been planning for ages to do in 2011 as that is the year I finally have paid off my debts.. Prior to me talking to her about Japan she had been talking about normal destinations like USA/Europe
I know there is nothing I can do and its my problem not hers.. but can anyone give me some practical advice so I dont go insane or have to quit my job (that I love).
Answer: I think i've heard of stories like this before, it's the classic protegie overtaking the master (think the movie Clueless). I think maybe she might be getting a big head in there, and because you've taught her so much in self improvement, she might be bold enough to think she deserves to take your ideas and maybe even your life. You are taking it personal. From an objective point of view, you have done good by being so kind and generous with her, and karma will reward you. How she decides to go from there is not your problem, and I think you've done enough.
You've got to concentrate on how to make your own situation better independent of her actions, and not to take personal what someone so seemingly childish does. If she copies your ideas in a professional environment, stick up for ownership of that idea. If she copies and steals your ideas, it's likely she also does it with other people. You say you are popular, talk to a few people you get along with that you are concerned that she copies what you says. Don't make a big deal out of it, people all indulge in gossip, just say it as if it's a curious thing. Maybe act confused and ask people if what she is doing is a bit weird, just as if for advice.
When you go home, write a letter addressed to her of exactly how you feel, print it out and burn it or throw it in the trash.
should i go on holiday with my parents?
(in case its relevant, im 22 years old.)
i am moving to south korea in february 2011 to live. im not going to have a lot of vacation time while im there. my parents want to come and visit me for a couple of weeks when i have a vacation in the summer. (i will have my birthday during this time.) i have a lot of problems with my family (i wont go into this; ill just say that they love me, but that i have been hurt, insulted, and disrespected quite badly on many occasions.) anyway, im not really comfortable around my family, and for that reason i generally prefer to spend my birthday and similar times without being in their presence. i usually dont like being with my parents and my friends at the same time. but after 6 months away from them, this shouldnt be too bad.
my parents want to travel around korea for a week with me. this is ok. they also want to go to japan with me for a week. the thing is, if i go to japan with them, my mind will not be occupied by the novelty of japan, but largely by worries about how to behave in front of my parents etc. usually if i go travelling, i like to go and meet lots of new people, and talk openly about lots of things, but i just dont feel comfortable doing this in front of my parents. they will also try to tell me what to do etc, and probably make fun of me sometimes. so if i go to japan with my parents, im worried that i wont get that much out of it, and that my image of japan will be tainted by that. i will probably not have many opportunities to go to japan in the future, so i probably dont want to spend my money on going there with my parents.
the thing is, despite the many problems i have had with my family, they have also given me a lot. this means that i will feel guilty not going to japan with my parents. furthermore, if i decide not to go to japan with them, im not entirely sure when i should tell them. i could tell them now, while im living with them, or wait for a few months and then tell them when im in korea. (they are already planning the trip now, so we have already talked about it.) i could say that i want to go to japan alone, and that they should spend the 2 weeks in korea with me, and then visit japan afterwards. does this sound reasonable?
what are your opinions on this?
thank you
Answer: This is an excellent question, and it sounds like you are on a decent track to a solution. As for making a compromise about spending two weeks with you in Korea, and you going to Japan alone (or with friends) would be a good way to do that. My source for this is that I recently have had some very traumatic and ugly vacation experiences recently with my family. A few months ago I wanted to have a good time on the east coast of the U.S. seeing different sites and enjoying the area, and I had to deal with constant arguing between everyone, complaining, and ridiculing of me. With your parents, you said you have to be restricted, this is not the point of a vacation, and you are 22 years old and should be savoring every moment you have to enjoy your life. Make compromises and explain to them in a nice but casual way that you really wanted to experience the trip from a different point of view, and explore the vast area on your own, and that you want to do something else with them at a later time. I have been on bad vacations, many of them, with my family, and I can tell you that the intense negative energy is not worth it for their happiness. Yes they support you, and you have to respect that entirely, but it is not worth it for them to spend money if it will not be a really positive experience for the whole unit. As for me, they wanted to go with me to a beach area for the winter, I just gave them the impression I wasn’t interested, and it all went away, even after they attempted to plan excruciatingly for it. My back up excuse to get out of the vacation was that I have graduate student obligations, but I didn’t really have to use this excuse. There is another way of looking at it though, that you should go to with your family, and endure what they might say or do, because it will make you a stronger individual, and will let them know you are not affected by their words and actions. But really, most likely they will not change, they are old, and you are young, so go on the vacation yourself and get that feeling of fullness when you are done. Be nice to your parents, I am sure they will understand, and one of them will cope with you.
Are there any great Wii games coming out if you dont like family friendly titles?
Will Nintendo announced something spectacular at TGS?
Will Wii HD come out in 2011?
Wii HD would be good because the Wii 480i graphics and developers always stripped down games to fit on the Wii but with Wii HD they dont have to strip games to fit on the Wii. The Wii needs more action games and less family games
The Conduit and Tecchu 4 will be great games and the Wii lacking hardcore games
Will Nintendo win TGS?
Should the Wii version of Madden 2010 be named Madden 2010 all play or Madden 2010?
Is all play a good thing for the Wii or a bad thing for the Wii if you are a experienced Wii gamer? EA always improve the 360 and version but not Wii version, they just give the Wii version family features
Which is the best console right now, Wii, 360 or PS3? If you are a hardcore Wii gamer you want to see action games, shooting games, raacing games and family games but there are more family friendly games being made every year. The 360 and Ps3 have great games you want to buy and play every year and they have great press conferences while with the Wii its the opposite
Right now the Wii does not have great games to play for the this holiday season. All the graet Wii games were made and came from Japan while the great Wii title that was made in America was Metroid Prime 3 Corruption. At E3 2008 Nintendo did not announced anything for the Hardcore gamers. When i went to Ign.com i saw a poll and it said (which is the best console of this generation) The 360 had 40% percent, the PS3 had 38% percent while the Wii had 20% percent.
Answer: Tons, off the top of my head:
The Conduit
Tales of Symphonia 2
Cursed Mountain
Monster Hunter 3
Animal Crossing: CF (sorta)
Rygar
CoD: WaW
Dead Rising
Arc Rise Fantasia
No More Heroes 2
Punch-Out Wii
Sin and Punishment 2
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
Guitar Heroes
Kizuna
Tenchu 4
Castlevania: Judgment
Fragile
Fatal Frame 4 (I think it's 4)
FFCC: Echoes of Time
Oboro Muramasa
etc.
In addition to lots of Virtual Console and Wii ware games
Media Exam 2011, help please?
So, basically, our task for the exam is to make an action-adventure film with the rarget audience of families in mind.
So my (lame) idea is:
A family go on a safari in Africa where they leave the holiday pack and end up wandering into a mine where they find a very unique, sacred diamond. Out of interest, they take the diamond and research it on the internet. They discover that the diamond belongs to a poor family in Japan, and it is in the families best interest to return it to the Japanese family. But soon all the baddies find out and chase them around the world for it.
Thats brief ^ If you cat picture it, think of films like Stormbreaker and stuff.
Okay, so my problem is, I need a really good title?! All my thoughts are muddled up and if someone gave me a title or helped me think of one, itd be really good to organise all my thoughts!! Thankyou!!
Afghanistan Public Holiday dates - confused?
I am trying to compile a list of public holidays in Afghanistan between September 2010 and March 2011 but not all sites show the same dates - some are missing and some are a day out. I have been looking at http://www.callingcards-japan.com/holidays/2010/mideast/afghanistan.html and http://www.netogram.com/bank_holidays/afghanistan.htm . I need to know what the actual public holiday dates are for that period. Is there any reason for the differences? Also, are all these dates treated like our bank holidays, i.e. extra day off work.
