Answer: For me each year, a list of birth-dates, day/month was published about November, and those who would turn 18 the following year had to register.
There would then be a screening process where those who were unfit for service were released.
Various occupations were also released, I think there were other "let offs"
We were already in the process of having a voluntary armed force.
I think it was 3 years.
Our CMT (compulsory military training) had been abolished in '56, I think.

Answer: Sherut Leumi (national service) is voluntary national service that takes the place of army service. Israeli citizens who get an army exemption and non-Israeli citizens who volunteer are both eligible.
Sherut Leumi gives young women an opportunity to get intensive exposure to a number of professional environments in Israeli society. Most are Hebrew-speaking environments, but English speakers are rare commodities whose skills are greatly valued. It may also be possible to request an English-speaking environment for service.
Sherut Leumi offers programs in a wide range of fields including special education, administration, hospitals, law, geriatrics, nursing homes, health clinics, teens at risk, internal security, education, disadvantaged communities, immigrant assistance, environmentalism and other related non-profit organizations. Applicants are interviewed and are matched as best as possible, via placement organizations, to appropriate positions according to their skills, interests and needs. Each placement organization works within specific fields, so it is advisable to have an idea of the field of interest, and then to find the placement organization that works within the chosen field.
One who decides to do Sherut Leumi must register through one of the state-recognized placement organizations. The organization then matches the applicant to the place of service. Service lasts for 12 months and typically requires 30-40 hours/week. Each girl is then assigned to a coordinator (rakezet) who serves as a supervisor and advisor.

Answer: Sounds good to me, but I'm pretty sure the money spent on dole payments wouldn't cover the cost of feeding and accommodating that lot.
OK I've had a rethink, it would keep thousands out of jail that must be costing millions? It would save millions in police time chasing these 'bored' youngsters, it would stop loads of killings. True some would die fighting useless wars, but I think that bit would balance out.

Another possibility is that you voluntier to do charity or other community services diligently for a period of at least a year (ca. 20hrs/week) - although this could be done in installments, e.g., as a student, you would oblige yourself for 4x 3 months vacation.
Do you see the lifes experiances gained by such an endeavor, the developement and strengthening of your character and integrity? Do you realize how this would look like on your resume and the better chances for employment to jump-start your career?
Do you see how it would strengthen the ecconomy, the social structure, above all, the good name of your country?
Of course, during your National Service you are to get a service pay, the amount depending on your age and obligations. If you are single, childless and have never worked before - or you were paid less - you should get the same basic pay as a soldier in boot camp, as you would receive the same material benefits,e.g., food, lodgings, clothes, etc.. Otherwise, your job, salary, priority at the work place should be secured and you would get paid at least 40% of your salery (or the basic pay as above if its more) with additional pay if you have to support a spouse and/or children.
While working for a corperation or the state in Switzerland, the employer usually willingly volunteers to pay you the difference missing from your salary.
If you volunteer to do charity work in your free time then you should also realize that you are also voluntiering any sort of payment.
Answer: I have volunteered my entire life (even as a child) and I will tell you that I get more out of it than I give. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer and currently work in international development in Africa. I sponsor a young African girl (to go to school and live in a safer environment) and also regularly contribute about 15% of my salary to one cause or another. I think that human beings are basically good and that we should nurture that goodness in a cause & effect manner. From a young age schools should offer credits to those who volunteer. By doing this they will nurture the goodness in the child, the child (well, most) should feel the rush that doing good creates, and that child will grow to want that rush and continue to volunteer.
"Greed is good" was a mantra of the 80s. I believe if we nurture volunteerism -- the act of giving, of doing good -- in our children early, they will feel the same "high" someone who is greedy gets when acquiring "stuff." They will want to repeat that great feeling.
Let's face it. When we give a quarter to someone begging on the street, or we give blood, we give it just as much for the good feeling we get. We benefit from the high we receive as we exercise the act of giving. It's a focus on our feelings because, despite our inherent goodness, we are also inherently selfish. For this reason I say "Be selfish and give!"

Answer: Not all of us are rude :( I'm 14. I know what you mean. People in my school are so immature & rude to the teachers. I don't understand why. But I think what's happening in society today is the whole media. Parenting styles have changed, less parents seem to care about how their child treats people, it's the media with all the things going on. It's all just changed, sadly :-/

Would it be good to have compulsory national military service in UK for guys?
Other countries have compulsory national service as soon as a male turns 18. Some of my friends in fact have served and I reckon theyre better off for it - even they say so. Theyre more mature, theyre certainly more knowledgable, theyre more disciplined etc.
Was just wandering, if it would work in UK? To help tackle the increasing rate of youth offending?
Answer: I'm not in the UK, but I'd suggest they not have compulsory service.
The purpose of the military is defense, not educating the youth not to commit crimes. I don't care how effective it would be, the fact is that it isn't what the military is for.
The military is more effective with volunteers. Let the weak, fearful, and disloyal stay home.

Obama wants to let low income people attend college for free..but the catch is they would have to volunteer for National Service. What kind of service is that specifically?
Does this have to do with his plan to rebuild the military, is this some sort of draft?
Answer: Being from the UK I wouldn't be sure exactly what Obama has in mind but National Service is a common name for mandatory or voluntary government service programs most often focusing on military service. If it runs as a similar system as Britain used to have then men from 17 to 21 would do a year to 18 months in one of the armed forces and remain on the reserve list for four years, with a liability to be recalled to their units for up to twenty days service or training on not more than three occasions in the four years. But this was specific to Britain and Obama may have other ideas.
There are other forms of National Service that could involve work within a community.
There are other countries that still adopt National Service some of which include Mexico, Sweden, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Israel and Switzerland.

Who thinks that the UK government should being back National Service?
After reading all about the youth of our country attacking innocent people, robbing, knife attacks and now attacking police stations, what is this country coming too? Why wont the government get off the backsides and actually do something to protect those people who are law abiding citizens, who are just trying to protect their property or families etc.
I say bring back National Service!!! and make the parents more accountable, send them to prison or do community service if they wont acknowledge what their children are doing, make them take notice.
The same with people who do not live in this country or are here seeking to live here, if they dont abide by our rules, send them home.

So if your children were robbing people, threatening people outside their own homes, steeling cars, attacking people, you would not want something to be done about them, because you seam to be in the group of what your kids do outside the house you dont want to know about!!!

Answer: National Service at Singapore is for 2 years. So 20 to answer your question. Usually the boys will have to go to National Service after their college, and after they service the country for 2 years, then they resume their schooling at a University.

What do you think of national service for all?
Some countries like Israel have both women and men eligible for conscription in their Army. Do you think its fair for women to be compulsorily conscripted for National Service (except special cases like health issues of course)? Why? You can add more details if you want to.
Answer: I'm thinking about that airplane that was hijacked and crashed in Pennsylvania. There were only a handfull of military-trained people aboard. Those terrorists couldn't reach their target. Had thre been 20 or 30 people aboard that flight who'd been in the military, I'll bet the terrorists wouldn't have been able to take over the plane.
Now I'm thinking about the two planes that crashed into the Twin Towers killing about 3,000. The people on those two planes didn't have the trainng to mount any kind of resistance. Suppose 20-30% of the passengers had been in the service. They would know how to act as a team to defeat an enemy. Maybe 3000 people would be alive today.
Now I'm thinking about all those wannabe heroes who say they won't fight in the military, but, when the enemy is marching up he streets, they'll take up arms. They're naive, ignorant, or insane. If the enemy is marching in our streets, they'll have wiped out the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, National Guard, the CIA, the FBI, the local police, the Fire Department, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, anybody and everybody with any training that might allow them to mount some resistance. Now, it takes a couple of months to get some kid off the street to a point where he's of minimal danger to himself and those along side of whom he's fighting. It takes a few more months to train that kid on some piece of equipent in today's arsenal. Do these wannabe heroes really believe the enemy's going to wait on the corner for six months while we train a new militaary? "But," they say, "I've been hunting all my life." To that I say, "So what? Deer seldom shoot back. And they never stalk humans or shoot first."
Suppose everybody served a little time in the military. If the enemy was able to overcome a military some 30 million strong, and if he somehow began marching up our streets, he'd no longer have to contend with a few untrained citizens. Instead, he'd be facing some 200 million trained, ex-service personnel... and they'd be fighting for their homes.
Also, consider that currently the military has to select the best of whatever walks, staggers, crawls, or slithers through the door. If the need somebody with specific skills and they can't get them, they have to lower their standards. If hey had the entire population from which to choose, they could select just what they need.
They could do away with "sign up" bonuses. For critical skills, they could still maintain re-enlistment bonuses, but they wouldn't have to be across the board. If people all served,, it could lower the cost of keeping a military in the long run.

National Service does anybody think this would bring back discipline to our society
Answer: I did National Service and it made me grow up and mature... Although I was trained to use a rifle and sten gun as part of basic training we also had to learn parade ground skills and certainly get used to discipline... Trade training was very good, the discipline was still there but not as stringent as at basic training. I learnt in 6 months to be an aircraft electrician and had a lot of experience in servicing all types of aircraft.. After my 2 years was up at various airfields in the UK ( never got sent abroad) I was demobbed a much more mature person with a lot of extra skills... I went back to my office job but soon changed to electronics using some of my RAF skills and built a good career . My brother was in the Army... He learnt security of military sites, alarm systems and so on. After his demob he worked at a burglar alarm firm ended up with his own business providing security to banks etc., strong room systems etc In both our cases it was very beneficial and similarly to many thousand others . Obviously there were some to whom it was all a waste of time Wonder how their lives turned out .
