Answer: I'm doing this at A-level now, are you? We did this today... A Phospholipid is Glycerol + 2 Fatty acids + 1 Phosphoric Acid In a condensation reaction, this produces 1 phospholipid, and 3 water molecules. The phosphate part of this has OH groups, which can form hydrogen bonds with water. The fatty acid parts don't have Oh groups, so they are hydrophobic. A triglyceride is made up of glycerol + 3 fatty acids (the phosphoric acid is replaced by another fatty acid, in comparison to the formula for phospholipid). Because the phosphate part contained the OH group in the phospholipid, and it is absent in this molecule, triglyceride can not form hydrogen bonds, and so is hydrophobic. hope this helps, i know research can be tricky, often there's either not enough, or too much more advanced information.

Answer: phospholipids have a hydrophillic head and a hydrophobic tail, which is why the heads face outwards and the tails face inwards. the chemical makeup of lipids makes them insoluble in water. this is due to the high amount of hydrogen atoms in lipids. it accomplishes selective absorption/permeability because of the hydrophobic/hydrophillic interactions that keep large and/or ionically charged molecules out of the cell.

Describe the structure of a phospholipid bilayer using hydrophobic and hydrophilic, and its function in a cell.
Answer: So the phospholipid bi layer is basically just the cell membrane. Microscopically there are little phosopholipids that make up this bi layer. They have a round head with two tails. These little guys are lined up right next to each other; there are also two layers of them. (kind of like a sandwich) The tails face each other while the heads face the outwards. The heads of the phospholipids are hydrophilic because they love water and can't survive without it. This make sense because where their heads are (facing outwards) completely surrounded by water. The tails are hydrophobic because they hate water. This works out great too because where the tails are touching there is no water. This whole situation makes the cell very protected because most molecules can't slip inbetween these tightly packed phospholipids and they can't pass through the middle (tail) layer because it's full of fat, not water. Answer: Lipids are hydrophobic so they are not water soluble. Phosolipids are used in the cellular membrane because their phosphate groups are hydrophylic and their 2 lipid tails form the inside of the membrane while the phosphate group makes up the 2 outsides of the membrane.

The polar heads face the inside and outside of the cell, while the non-polar tails are sandwiched in between. It is important for the cell membrane to interact with water-based solutions on the inside and outside of the cell to bring nutrients into the cell and expel waste products. So what would happen to the cell if you reversed the bilayer so that the polar heads were sandwiched in the middle and the non-polar tails faced the outside?
Answer: They'd right themselves. Hell, you can throw a handful of phospholipids in a wet environment and they'll right themselves for that nice sphere.

The difference being that it is composed of a single layer of lipids, no a bilayer. With the membrane of a cell, there is water solution outside and inside with a double lipid layer separating the two. The hydrophobic tails face the interior of the bilayer. The micelle is like a 'solid' sphere with all the hydrophobic tails pointing in and the hydrophilic ends on the surface of the sphere.
