Why are such vibrant colors used on st. basils cathedral in russia?
I have looked everywhere to find this answer and I have turned up nothing. Another student asked me this question since I did a mini report on this cathedral in geography class and I have no answer for this student. Please help. You dont even have to give me an answer if you can give me a reference to look up.
Answer: Initially it was built with red and white bricks and its onion domes were either golden or silver (according to different contradicting articles). What we see now is the result of multiple changes and reconstruction works in the XVIII-XIX centuries (it was damaged during the Napoleon invasion). It was rebuilt and recoloured many times.
So as to "why?", I'd say for no apparent reason but to make it look bright and joyful. No symbolism in colouring to talk about, as far I know. Other things like the initial structure and number of chapels is symbolic, though.
upd So jonal has expanded his answer and I'd like to point out the irony that he compares a cathedral built as a monument of Christians defeating Muslims to Muslim architecture in Spain and India. Poor Ivan IV, I feel somewhat sorry for him :)

how was the architect of the St. Basils Cathedral blinded?
extra credit :T
as in, what was used?
Answer: However, this is probably a myth, as Yakovlev, in cooperation with another master, Ivan ShirIai, designed the walls of the Kazan Kremlin and the Cathedral of the Assumption in Kazan in 1561 and 1562, just after the completion of St. Basil's. He also designed the northeast chapel of St. Basil's (where Basil himself, the popular Fool for Christ - yurodivy Vassily Blazhenny - is buried), in 1588, four years after Ivan's death.

how tall is the St. Basils Cathedral?
Answer: The cathedral is based on strictly geometrical principles. In the center is the main church with it's 57m (187ft) high tower. This tower is an octagonal tent-roofed structure topped by a small golden dome. Around this central tower are four large and four small chapels, each with a dome in proportion to it's size. The four larger chapels are at the ends of an imaginary cross with the main church at it's central point. The smaller chapels lie between the larger ones. The cathedral stands on a high base.

st basils cathedral onion domes what paint was used when the domes were painted?
st basils cathedral domes were painted in 1670 the paint is high qaulity i want to know what paint was used
Answer: I believe it was "fresco en seco" or "true fresco." This is created by heating lime (the same stuff that goes into cement) and mixing it with water and ground earth pigments. True fresco is tricky because it dries very quickly. The technique is also not taught much anymore (at least in the Uninted States). Sorry. I'm not completely sure, I'm just guessing based on what I've seen. The good news is that what you're probably admiring about the paintings is the quality of the colors. That's achieved by using real earth pigments, the kind that are mined from the ground rather than created in a lab. At your local art suppy store, just ask which varieties of paint are made using minerals and which are merely chemicals. The clerk should be able to direct you to a brand of paint that uses mostly earth pigments. Good luck!

Dimensions of St.Basils Cathedral?
I have to make a scale model of St. Basils Cathedral in Moscow, and I havent been able to find any of the measurements for the building. If anyone could help out, or could provide me with a scale factor, it would be greatly appreciated.
Answer: I found this, hope it will help a bit:
The cathedral is based on strictly geometrical principles.
The four larger chapels have an octagonal lower storey topped by a series of triangles enclosing slit windows. The apexes of the triangle point upwards, giving a strong sense of vertical movement. Above these are a cornice and a band of blind semicircular arches, and above these again are more triangles and slit windows, maintaining the upward movement.
The towers of the four smaller chapels begin with tiers of blind semicircular arches, set back one above the other. Above these is the drum supporting the dome, with brick mosaic decoration and slit windows.

russian kremlin, st basil,?
what was the kremlin used for over the years
explain the reasons behind the fame of st basils cathedral
Answer: The Kremlin was the seat of government. (Kreml is Russian for fortress.) It was originally a fortified site on the Moscow River, used by traders and local residents for protection, and grew over the centuries.
St. Basil's Church sits just outside the Kremlin, near the end of a large plaza. It has a rather gingerbread look, at least to me. Basil was not a real saint, he was a local madman of apparently rather charming nature (compare California's Emperor Norton, for example), and his popularity led to the church getting named unofficially for him.

St. Basils Cathedral Dimensions/ Construction?
Are any of you familiar with the building techniques in the 15th/ early 16th century? I am looking for information regarding who made up the labor force, the tools and also methods used in the construction and completion of St. Basils Cathedral. Finally are any familiar with ways in which I could retrieve the dimensions? I was thinking about using Google maps than using the distance key at the bottom to make a rough approximation of the surface it covered. If anyone has any ideas or tips it would be much appreciated!
Thanks
