Does anyone know anything about the Migrant workers or free elections in Thailand?
I was wondering if it was a big issue in thailand and personal opinions on how to solve the problem are very welcome. I have to write a model un position paper and well im trying to decide whether migrant workers or free elections is the better to write about. right now i hear a lot about the migrant worker issue but im not too sure about free elections!!!!!! Please help!! i can only work with those two topics and thailand as a country!! thanks
Answer: Well, I'm certainly no expert but if I were you I think I would chose free elections because of that timely in the country right now.
As I'm sure you know, there was a coup this year and a military junta has been running the country. They said they had to take over because of the corruption that existed in the country under the previous prime minister. One of the things he was accused of was buy votes in elections.
The current regime has promised to have free elections this December and everyone is watching and hoping they happen, and happen fairly.
A recent poll in Bangkok found that 65 percent of people questioned would be willing to sell their vote. That's a pretty discouraging sign.
Anyway, I think it would be easier for you to find information regarding free elections in Thailand right now.
Good luck.

@ ? I agreed that it is waste of money and time... I am wondering what will thThai gain by voting the PAD.... Should not they try to do more to the North/north east region to win them over...
Because they (PAD) only just want to be in power... But look what had they done in the past...
@pegasus 1551... Yeah right agreed... Why waste taxpayer money on those election again when everyone know that the same party will win... I guess people will never choose PAD again after what they done... i read on NEWS that now more people are keeping away from the protest... even former army chief who dispose Thaksin said that PAD leader did not use their "brain" trying to remove the Govt...
@ mooyang... Yeah right it is still not clear is there any election for the Thai...
@ Isabelle... Told U so many time Get out of CHINATOWN... U are out of date if U keep staying there... lol...
@ Janet... Most Singaporan in Thailand are tourist... Not many are working or live there...
But most Thai are working and live in Singapore... There is even a "little Thailand" in Singapore...
The "reason" PAD want to oust the present PM is because they keep saying that the PM is the puppet of former PM Thaksin because he is his brother in law...
In Dec 2007, Samak Sundaravej was voted by the people to be the PM after the coup... And they too said it is a puppet of former Thaksin...
The economic is so bad already yet now their supporter are blocking the road and protest at the International Airport...
If they are a good leader they should not harm their own countries this way...
Now people include me are wondering will the KING came out to STOP this... So far he had been quiet all this while...
U can find lot of NEWS related to the on the web... There are too many...
@ Isabelle... no idea... I guess Kanda will able to see this Questions... She is on my friend lists
No... There wont make another BAN on Youtube... It is totally different story... Last time it ban Youtube because a foreign post a clips about the KING... And they think it is disrespect to the KING...
@ gavin S... Yes I agreed with U... even though Thaksin was charge was "corrupt"... He did more than most ex Prime Minister in his time...
@ gavin S... In fact most PAD members are middle and uppers class "Bangkokians"...
In my opinion... PAD have no right to decide who should be PM... It is the people of Thailand who choose...
@ Isabelle... lol... j/k with U... U always told me that U are in CHINATOWN doing shopping... heheh
Let see next month (Dec 5) Thailand is hosting the regional soccer match... Maybe the protest will stop for the time being... Thailand is a soccer crazy countries... maybe the protest will end...
@ Isabelle... Ok... I take note will answer tonight no mood to answer now...
AFTER SOMEONE MAKE A POLICE REPORT... and was FINE 20BUCK ... FOR 2 CRIME OFFENCE... That is really CHEAP... isnt it...lol
Dare to said it... Dare not to put a nickname...
U keep blaming Thaksin Govt for the death of the 3000 people in the south but did U mention who start those violence (BOMBING) in the south and who BOMB and killed their own people...
Answer: No, The current government would be re-elected. the PAD is just a MOB, focused on their own agenda, Power. What a shame the government has no power over the military or even a national guard
Taksin though corrupt was good for the country, so when he was ousted by the army the people voted in his brother in law hoping for more of the same.
The PAD are thousands, but the people are millions

Why is it that The Red Shirts in Thailand do not want to wait for the next General Elections?
Instead of making trouble now why not wait a few years till next General Election?
Answer: Let's take a trip to wikipedia
WHEEEEEE
"There has been many issues especially in recent years concerning elections in Thailand. Accusation of vote buying and blackmail has been most cited. Most accusations leveled concerns vote buying particularly in rural areas where representatives of political parties or district captains are sent out offering up to 2,000 Bath for a vote. Others concern cheating and ballot tempering.
Other issues concern the powers of the Election Commission, an unelected and unaccountable body of five, which has absolute authority to cancel elections at will. It is also the sole arbiter and interpreter of Thai election laws. It has been incredibly active in the last two general elections in annulling and disqualifying candidates.
Voter turnout during elections is not much of a problem in Thailand as voting is compulsory and is one of the responsibilities described in the Constitution a citizen must exercise. Turnout is however much higher during general elections (85% in 2007) than they are for Senate (56% in 2008) or local elections (54% for Bangkok Governor in 2008)."
It sounds like there is corruption in the government, resulting in elected officials not actually being legitimately elected.

How can Thailand move out of its political and social chaos?
I say
1. Pass over the Crown Prince to be King
2. Crackdown and destroy the prostitution, drugs, crime, porn, violence and gangs. Stop Thailand turning into the worlds sex and drugs capital
3. Free democratic elections
4. Stop the corruption
5. Stop the military and police from interfering in politics.
I love Thailand, it hurts to see its slide into chaos and seediness.
Also .,. I dont care what you say! I do love Thailand!
Answer: The present Prime Minister is trying hard to start it. However, what have been deeply rooted and practiced a long long time ago, can not be just stopped in a very short time. It takes time and real efforts to make it. The people must learn, not to sell their votes for just a hundred or two hundred Baht. They should realized that when politicians spent a lot, they had "to earn it back", by hook or by crook. Educate the people. They are selling themselves very cheap! And then complain!!!

How did the Yellow Shirts come to power in Thailand?
Was it after a democratic vote? Why are RedShirts protesting and not waiting till the next election?
Answer: The yellow shirts are not in power. The last two governments changed because key figures were shown to have committed election fraud. Then Abhisit was elected PM by the Parliament - same process as in many western democracies - the Parliament that voted in this government consists entirely of democratically elected members.

A few other comments
- Thaksin was democratically elected, but became increasingly undemocratic, and the country gradually devolved from a nation where oligarchs skimmed off the top to a kleptocracy of one. During his watch, thousands of people were summarily executed in the South of Thailand and in a bizarre "war on drugs" in which body count was considered a marker of success.
-- the coup that ousted Thaksin was of course completely illegal, but none of the people who carried it out are in the present government.
-- the constitution which was approved by a referendum after the coup was flawed, but it provided more checks and balances, and made election fraud a truly accountable offense for the first time.
-- no one ever disputed the red shirts' right to peaceful assembly, and the government went out of its way to accede to their demands.
-- the red TV station has a perfect right to exist, but if foreigners actually understood Thai, they would realize that much of its content went far beyond any constitutionally acceptable limits of "protected speech" in a western democracy. Every civilized society limits speech when it actually harms others, whether by inciting hate or by slander. Example: Arisman threatened to destroy mosques, government buildings, and "all institutions you hold sacred" (potentially a reference to the constitutional monarchy).
-- since the government called the red shirts' bluff and allowed the deputy P.M. to report to the authorities to hear their accusations, the red leaders have been making ever-more fanciful demands.
-- Thailand hasn't had an unbreachable gulf between rich and poor for at least 20 years. These conflicts are about the rise of the middle class, not the war between the aristocrats and the proletariat.
Simplistic portrayals do not help anyone to understand anything.
