What were the sources of conflict in Upper Canada before 1837?
Answer: Basically, you had two colonies - one French, one English. In theory they were united, but in fact they were anything but. And the same situation still obtains today. Quebec has its own legal system - based on the French system, not the British jurisprudence, its own language, etc.etc.etc. The only difference is that Quebec, which is one province out of eleven, gets one third of the government budget - just a tad out of balance, and the Bloc Quebecois, a provincial party, has been the Official Opposition in Parliament, supported entirely by the Federal Government - the PQs single well advertised goal is to separate from Canada. Something really sounds crazy here....

What are the sources of conflict between President Roosevelt and President Taft?
Answer: There are several causes. As with most causes, there are "proximate" or immediate causes, and then there are ultimate causes. I'll give you an example. World War I was "proximately" caused by the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 by a Serbian separatist. However, this is not the "ultimate" cause. The ultimate cause was much more political, and had to do with the major power struggle and failed alliances (basically Russia and the western powers on one side and Germany, Austria-Hungary on the other). So ultimately, it was a much bigger factor that led to WWI.
As for the Taft-Roosevelt schism. Proximately speaking, what broke the proverbial camel's back was Taft's desire to create a more independent judiciary. (Taft, by the way, eventually became Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court). This all happened around 1911-1912. But ultimately, the real schism here was due to the divide in the Republican party between the more "conservative" element (which arguably survives to this day; it was then referred to as the 'Old Guard') and the progressive element (which arguably does not survive, whose champion then was TR). Taft was likely more moderate on a number of issues. Unlike Roosevelt, Taft supported lower tarriffs (a position taken by modern Republicans; the Payne-Aldrich Tarriff Act of 1909, one proximate reason for the TR/Taft schism, actually raised many tarriffs, but TR wanted them raised more). Although both Taft and Roosevelt supported "trust busting", Taft's position was again more moderate. TR wanted to limit the judiciary's ability to issue injunctions against labor unions, as these injunctions helped big business. TR also wanted a national income tax, Taft did not.
Although TR and Taft had started to separate ideologically even as early as 1909 (when Taft had entered office: recall that TR had actually been a big supporter of Taft as nominee for president in 1908), the maneuvers inside the Republican Party were the final straw.
So ultimately it comes down to differences in how to achieve "progressive policies": Taft wanted the judiciary to maintain its power, TR wanted it limited. Taft wanted slightly lower tarriffs (although Taft, by modern standards, would be considered protectionist); Taft was not as rhetorically opposed to big business, and as a result many large companies("trusts") supported him.

What were the sources of conflict between the church and state in the Middle Ages?
Answer: There was one major source of conflict: power over people. This was played out over the centuries in the following events:
1. The Investiture Controversy-11th century dispute between Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor and Pope Gregory VII over who would control appointments of church officials (investiture).
2. Magna Carta-It required the King to renounce certain rights, respect certain legal procedures and accept that his will could be bound by the law. It explicitly protected certain rights of the King's subjects, whether free or fettered — most notably the writ of habeas corpus, allowing appeal against unlawful imprisonment.
3. The Papal Controversy between King Philip the Fair of France and Pope Boniface VIII. Pope Boniface VIII put forward some of the strongest claims to temporal as well as spiritual supremacy of any Pope and intervened incessantly in foreign affairs. He proclaimed that it "is necessary for salvation that every living creature be under submission to the Roman pontiff."
4. The conflict between King Henry II of England and Thomas a Beckett Archbishop of Canterbury over who had authority over clergy.
5. The Guelph/Ghibellene Controversy over the authority of the Pope and the Holy Roman Empire in the 12th and 13th centuries in Italy.
6. The Crusades

What is the specific conflict(cause) of the American Revolution? Need websites/sources....if possible.?
i need to know the specific conflict
sources plz
Answer: The answer is laid out quite clearly in the Declaration of Independence where the Founding Fathers were quite specific. You can google it and I'm sure read it on-line for free. As I recall, problems with justice (defendants hauled off to distant lands for trial), colonists forced to house British soldiers in their homes, economic contraints and interference with trade and, of course, unfair taxation without a voice in how those taxes were levied. Basically it boils down to self determination. You know back in the 60's there was a song with lyrics that said, "I don't understand, it's so simple to me. People everywhere just want to be free." Those words were true in 1776 just as they are today. Good luck!

What were the two main sources of conflict between the colonists and the indians?
Answer: Foremost cause was the clash of civilizations between Indians and Europeans, an all encompassing set of differences about nearly everything.
Second was the shared desire for security the achievement of which could come only at the expense of the other. Sharing the land was not possible in light of the above, and in view of the mutual atrocities each inflicted on the other.

What will be the major SOURCES of conflict in the first decade of the 21 century in your opinion?
Answer: We have less than three years to the end of this first decade of the 21st century so any conflict that you refer to will occur rather soon.
All wars have an element of economics within the source of its conflict so I think that the rise and fall of national and regional economies will be behind much of the troubles. And connected to the economic conflicts, I believe we may see trouble brewing in environmental front (especially over resources) as well, namely competition for water, fossil fuels and liveable/arable land. We see the makings of an international economic shakedown. It does not necessarily mean global depression, but it does illustrate how intricately our lives is influence by globalization and international trade and commerce. History has shown that states with growing economies have often expanded their military, plus we also have seen countries with shrinking or collapsing economies use their military to prop up their weak political standing.
Global warming is not fiction. Whether it is human induced or accelerated by humans seems to be the stumbling block to a larger international acceptance. I see environmental problems causing mass migrations, ecosystems collapsing and elimination of basic resources. If this were to happen . . . look out. I don't care where you live, if there are millions, no tens of millions of people, without the basics (Americans? Indians? Egyptians? Chinese? Brazilian?) then they will go out in search of food, water and shelter. Which countries will allow free passage across their borders and which countries will not?

What were the main sources of conflict between china and the western powers during the 1830s and 1840s?
Does anyone know what things (such as treaties etc.) triggered the Sino-western conflict during the 1830s and 40s? Thanks everyone!
Answer: It was to do with trade.European countries (particularly Britain) got huge amounts of tea and porcelain from China. However, the Chinese refused to trade for these goods, and would only accept cash for them. Most money at this time was in the form of silver coins, and the trade with China eventually caused a shortage of hard currency in the west, particularly for Britain. This, in turn, was having a detrimental effect on the economy.
So,Britain needed a commodity that the Chinese would accept in return for porcelain and tea.The answer was opium, produced in India.Soon, Chinese merchants were happily trading tea and porcelain for opium. However, opium is highly addictive and has a very deleterious effect on those who become addicted. Before long, the Chinese Emperor recognized the negative impact of opium imports on the Chinese people and economy, and banned it,executing those Chinese merchants caught dealing in it, and taking action against the British community in the trading port of Canton (November 1839).
Britain thus began the First Opium War (1840-42) to force China to accept opium imports, and to force China to open up to foreign trade on a wider scale.
