How do I download Google Finance financial data in realtime through a TCP connection, to use for analysis?
Im trying to connect to Google finance through a standard TCP connection. Google finance provide financial data in "real time" so Im trying to grab it through a TCP connection in real time, so that I can feed it into my own program for further analysis. Does anyone know how to correctly cite Google Finance in APA format?
I am making a PowerPoint presentation for school. I am including a chart(bar graph) using information that I got from Google finance in my presentation. We are supposed to cite information in our presentation in APA format. I am not sure how to do this. Can anyone help?

Answer: Downloading Google finance's Historical Prices
If Google finance's historical stock quotes are to be used in Microsoft Excel or OpenOffice.org Calc then the data can be loaded into a spreadsheet by clicking on 'Download to spreadsheet'; however, the URL behind that link can be accessed directly by any programmer for use in their own applications.
The csv file can be accessed directly by adding a few variables to the Google finance historical data URL; these are:
* q (the symbol for the market and company)
* startdate (with the format month+day,year)
* endate (again with the format month+day,year)
* output (which will be csv)
So, the url will be something like:
http://finance.google.co.uk/finance/historical?
q=LON:VOD&startdate=Oct+1,2008&enddate=Oct+9,2008&output=csv
This url can used by the programmer in a number of different ways, for example:
* download the csv file with wget and use AWK to format it
* read the data as a stream within a PHP script

If Im starting a business (hypothetically speaking), how would I get my companys stock and financial information posted on Yahoo! (and Google) Finance?
Answer: You would have to be a publicly traded company ,
Have had an IPO and a bank that handles the process .
Once you are traded ( and assigned a ticker symbol )
All trading sites would show your trading data .

Im looking to get more into fundamental analysis, but yahoo & Google finance only offer basic data and measures... Im looking for things like recent stock buybacks, sales/earnings for the past 5 yrs, project sales & earnings for the next couple years, etc.
Any advice from investors/traders in this regard would be awesome, thanks guys.

Answer: I just began entering my data at Google finance. Forbes has a Best of the Web Portfolio Tracker column (which does not list Google) and I did check most of them out and found most of them to be lacking due to problems that varied from no intraday value tracking to not being able to add foreign stocks or pink sheet stocks; and many of them were quite pokey. With the data I've submitted so far on Google, it appears to be working fine, fast and simple. Yahoo lost its place as the primary search engine and now it's fixing to lose its place as a favorite financial site.

Google Finance Portfolio as a Stock Simulation Game?
Can one use the portfolio part of the Google finance as a virtual stock trading game, to learn more about investment? If not, what features are lacking, and what is a good substitute?
Answer: Sure you could use it that way if you and some buddies just set up portfolios and tracked who did better. The things missing are commissions and taxes. Also everyone has to be totally honest really the main thing missing is that since its not real money you won't act the same way (ie it pays to take huge risks figuring I'll either win it all or lose everything but its worth the chance - in real life you'd be alot more conservative).

What does Volume mean in Google Finance?
Does Google finance "Vol:" mean number of shares traded today or over the last n days?
And does"Avg Vol" mean average number of shares traded daily over the last 5 days, 20 days, 100 days?
Or something else completely?
Answer: It should give you a time frame, if it says 3mo than that is the average volume over the past 3 months. Try www.investopedia.com for any investing questions.

How to see the 2 week price history chart for stocks on Google/Yahoo Finance?

How can i check the price history chart (for 2 weeks: December 21 to 30, 2010) for stocks on Google/Yahoo Finance?
I want to see just those 2 weeks on a chart.. but i cant seem to find any option for me to do that...
Is there another website which i can check only the specified dates?
Answer: well normally u have 1 week then 1 month then quarterly etc. etc. If u want to only see the last two weeks then look at a monthly report and just look at the first two weeks. If you need to use Excel to help you with your calculations.

Why is there no time data attached to quotes on Google or Yahoo Finance?
When I access my portfolio data on Google finance or Yahoo Finance, there is no date or time attached to the data for my stocks (I see a "Last price" column, but it doesnt say from when). Additionally, there is a "Change" column, but it doesnt say over what period. Any ideas why? Thank you.
Answer: I typically touch the stock of interest (from my Portfolio list) to see the current price. In that screen you can see (typically) both the 15 minute delayed quote and many times a more up to the minute (it shows the time as ET) realtime quote. The 1 day graph also gives a nice quick trend of the day's activity (however it is delayed by 15 minutes).
The "Change" column is normally connected to the change in price from that Prior Day (Friday on Monday). The GAIN/LOSS field is nice to show overall return based on the date you associated with the Purchase Date of the stock in your portfolio. For this reason, you may have want to show the column purchase date (TRADE DATE) also to get an idea of how long the timespan for the GAIN/LOSS shown.

How do you copy and paste a stock graph from google finance?

Answer: Google finance is free. You just need a free Google account, then go to finance.google.com, click portfolios in the top right hand side, and enter the information about your portfolio. You can even import your portfolio just copy your portfolio from any site and paste it in (you do not need a Google account to look up companies).
You can also look up different companies, look at news about them, look at competitors, add important dates to Google Calendar, and more.
Google finance is free.
