How does a layer of air between window panes prevent heat transfer?

Actually, I already have the answer. Its just that I have no clue what the answer is talking about. The answer: Air is a poor conductor of heat. Hence by sandwiching a layer of air in between the 2 panes of glass, transfer of heat energy by conduction is reduced. My question is, arent there 2 glass panes which are bad conductors of heat already? Why would you need a layer of air to prevent Heat transfer?
Answer: Yes, glass panes are "bad" conductors, but air is 40 times worse! Glass thermal conductivity about 1 W per metre-kelvin; air thermal conductivity 0.0241 W per metre-kelvin.

What does negative entropy say about direction of heat transfer?

Air is compressed from a state where the pressure is 1 bar and the temperature 27°C to a state where the pressure is 5 bars and the temperature is 117°C. Can this process occur adiabatically? I got that it CANT occur adiabatically, because the calculated change in entropy is negative. But what does this say about the direction of Heat transfer (and why)?
Answer: P1 = 1 bar T1 = 27 deg. C = 300 K P2 = 5bar T2 = 117 deg. C = 390 K Let's solve for entropy change, S2-S1 = So(T2) - So(T1) - R ln(P2/P1) S2-S1 = 1.96633 - 1.70203 - (8.314/28.97) ln(5) S2-S1 = 0.2643 - 0.46189 S2-S1 = - 0.19759 Yes the process can't occur adiabatically. Because entropy must be negative or zero. So there must be cooling process. Cooling process, heat being taken from the system, will reduce entropy.

How is heat transfer affected by velocity in convection?

I would like to see an equation for Heat transfer in terms of velocity. If the velocity of the air flow doubles and everything else stays the same does the Heat transfer double?
Answer: It depends on the amount of turbulence, which Feynman called "the most important unsolved problem of classical physics". In purely laminar flow there is no mixing between the layers so Heat transfer is essentially conductive (see ref.). However, a velocity increase tends to drive the average temperature of the fluid adjacent to the exchanger closer to the inlet temperature and transfer rate increases as sqrt(v). You can verify this with the calculator on the ref. page. The bottom line seems to be that, although there is an increase of heat flow with increased velocity, the velocity exponent is only defined for laminar flow.

Find the heat transfer rate from the heated surface to the cooling fluid?

A cooling fluid flows on a heated rectangular surface that is 2.0 X 0.5 meters. The surface temperature is 60.00 C. The cooling fluid has a temperature of 15.00 C. If the convective Heat transfer coefficient for the cooling fluid is 2000.0 W/m2-0C, find the Heat transfer rate from the heated surface to the cooling fluid. Show all your work.
Answer: As long as the fluid doesn't have any motion, you use Newton's law of cooling to solve this. The equation is Q=h*A*deltaT. Q=2000*(2.0*0.5)*(60-15)=90000W=90kW.... you should be able to solve these types of problems by simply looking at the units. You know what unit you are looking for so it should be able to see it by looking at all the values given.

How do you find heat transfer and work?

A100-L tank contains nitrogen at 900K and 3 MPa. The tank is then cooled to 100K. What are the work and Heat transfer for the process?
Answer: You're using nitrogen, so you can assume ideal gas behavior. You're going to want to determine the mass of nitrogen in the tank. You can get this from PV=mRT (pay close attention to your units here.) So, m=PV/(RT), where R is the ideal gas constant, P is the pressure, V is the volume, and T is the temperature. Now, thermodynamic work for a closed system (mass is constant) is given by the integral of PdV. However, it seems like you have a rigid tank here, so no volume change. Think about what this means for the dV quantity. Because you are only given temperature information for the final state, you will need to use U=mc(T2-T1) to get the total energy change. Here, c is the specific heat for nitrogen. Also, recall that U=Q-W. Hopefully this is enough info.

Heat transfer?

Describe how heat can be transferred through matter by the collisions of atoms (conduction) or through space (radiation) in a liquid or gas currents will facilitate the transfer of heat (convection)
Answer: Conduction-particles collide with one another, transferring energy, eg spoon in hot cup. Particles in hot liquid/cup collide with cool spoon giving their particles energy and hence increasing temp. Radiation-radiation from sun is absorbed by object giving heat. eg on beach we absorb radiation and makes us warm. Everything above absolute zero gives off radiation. We give it off, but we get it back in return (sun, pillow, car etc.) from other objects. Convection-hot air/liquid rises and cool air falls down. Heating a glass bottle from bottom, hot water rises to top as becomes less dense, and allows cool liquid to fall to bottom and be heated. Process continues for even distribution. In radiators, lets off hot air which eventually sinks as loses temp and warms room up. In convection, process is a 'convection current'. Hope this helps! Remember these three methods are the only methods of Heat transfer!

Is he heat transfer coefficient IN CONVECTION the same for two different surface materials?

Same flow conditions and surface geometry, but the surface made of two different materials, for example aluminium and steel. Are their Heat transfer coefficient different? If yes, what formula shows it. Nussel number, Prandt? Thanks!! =)
Answer: The overall Heat transfer coefficient is based on many variables. One of these is the effect that the surface has on the turbulence of the fluid passing by. That means the roughness of the surface has an effect but the material doesn't. The material only is involved in the conductance portion of the overall Heat transfer coefficient.

what are the mordern technology used for heat transfer in or out of my house?

I am doing my science project about Heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. I need to explain at least one piece of modern technology used for Heat transfer in or out of my house. Please help me!
Answer: A heat pump can push heat either way: into a house in the winter and out of the house in the summer. It can move about 4 times more heat (energy) than it uses to run the pump. This makes it very cost effective to run. The downside is that it is more expensive to install. In the end a heat pump is more cost effective over its lifetime than either an oil furnace and/or air conditioning. Advances in the stirling engine that runs the pump will make these devices standard issue in new houses in the next 2 decades.

How to stop heat transfer through a sliding glass door?

Does anyone have any ideas for stopping (or minimizing) Heat transfer through a sliding glass door? I live in Phoenix, AZ. I own a condo with a sliding glass door to the backyard. During the day I can feel the heat coming through the glass. I have vertical blinds on the door that stops some of the heat, but it still gets really hot in the room. The door is in the shade 95% of the time...its mostly just the hot air. So putting an additional shade in front of it wont do much good. Any ideas of additional methods for keeping out the heat? Anything I can add/put onto/put in front of the door to slow down the Heat transfer? Thanks!
Answer: I recently screened a house in Texas. I choose the "No Seeum" material for all of the screens. There was a significant drop of temperature in the house afterward. I choose to do the job myself, purchased the materials and took a Saturday to do 18 screens. Once you do the first one, the job becomes easier. My GF couldn't believe the difference. I did the screen on the backdoor first, so that she could see and feel the difference as it was slide open and closed. The other option would be to coat it with UV protective window film. You can find it in the same stores you would find the screening materials, LOWES, HOMEDEPOT, ACE TRUVALUE, or most any good hardware store. You can choose tint percentages and mirrored or unmirrored finishes. Either way, you will see a noticable decrease in your electric bill. Her's dropped by nearly 22% during February. I hope this helps. If you really want to see a change, do both to your windows.

the space b/w the inner walls of a thermos bottle is evacuated to minimize Heat transfer by what type of Heat transfer? is it radiation? urgent!
Answer: Evacuating the space in a thermos eliminates (or at least greatly reduces, because the vacuum isn't perfect, and there are still physical connections between the inner and outer shells of the thermos through which heat can be conducted) Heat transfer by both conduction and convection. Radiation still operates, but usually, the thermos walls are made shiny (high albedo) to reduce radiative Heat transfer.

The transfer of heat is normally from a high temperature object to a lower temperature object. Heat transfer changes the internal energy of both systems ...

What is heat transfer co-efficient. Why fluid with lower heat tr coeff normally goes in shell of exchanger?

It is written"The fluid with low Heat transfer co-efficient normally goes in shell circuit of a heat exchanger." But why? Tell me the significance of Heat transfer co-eeficient for a heat exchanger.
Answer: The overall Heat transfer coefficient U is a measure of the overall ability of a series of conductive and convective barriers to transfer heat. It is commonly applied to the calculation of Heat transfer in heat exchangers, but can be applied equally well to other problems. For the case of a heat exchanger, U can be used to determine the total Heat transfer between the two streams in the heat exchanger by the following relationship: Q = UAΔTLM where Q = Heat transfer rate (W) U = overall Heat transfer coefficient (W/(m²·K)) A = Heat transfer surface area (m2) ΔTLM = log mean temperature difference (K) Th ecriteria specified by you with low Heat transfer Co-efficient goes in shell is not always true.refer this: http://www.cheresources.com/designexzz.shtml So it depends many factors in addition to what you specified.

How to find heat transfer in an electric car?

I am doing a project on the Tesla Roadster and I need help on how to find the Heat transfer in the electric car. How can I calculate the Heat transfer in the Tesla Roadster?
Answer: Draw a diagram that shows the flow and conversion of energy in the car. Where ever energy is transferred or converted from one form to another, some energy is converted to waste heat that must be transferred to the atmosphere. Electrical power is connected to a battery charger inside the car. The charger converts the power from AC to DC at the voltage required to charge the batteries. Perhaps 2 to 3 percent of the energy is lost as heat in the electronic components in the charger and transferred to aluminum heatsinks and from the heatsinks to the air. Inside the batteries, electrical energy is converted to chemical energy. That conversion and the flow of current through internal resistance in the batteries results in heat that must be transferred to the air. When the car is running, chemical energy stored in the batteries is converted to electrical energy with a similar transfer of waste heat – perhaps 3 to 6%. DC power from the batteries is converted to AC power in the motor controller. The motor controller regulates the voltage and frequency to control the speed of the motor. Perhaps 3 to 4 percent of the energy is lost as heat in the electronic components in the motor controller and transferred to aluminum heatsinks and from the heatsinks to the air. The AC motor converts electrical energy to mechanical energy. Perhaps 5 to 6 percent of the electrical energy is lost as heat in the motor and transferred to the air. Some mechanical energy, perhaps 1%, is lost as heat in the bearings and gears of the mechanical transmission, differential, drive shafts and wheels. When the brakes are applied, some braking energy is returned to the batteries with losses in the drive train, motor, motor controller and batteries. There are also disk brakes that convert mechanical energy through friction to heat in the disks from which the heat is transferred to the air. I have provided estimates of the percent of energy transferred as heat from various components. Only the designers can provide accurate calculations. PS1: There is more information at teslamotors.com and the links below. If you want more details about the losses in the energy storage system, power electronics module, motor etc., post another question or use answers email. The energy storage system US patent is 7433794.
