How do I turn off auto back up on MyBook?
I have a external hard drive Mybook. When I turn on my pc, it auto backs up everything. It takes forever to turn on my computer. How do I disable that feature?
Answer: The Mybook should have come with backup software to facilitate the auto backup. You need to open this software and stop it from auto running when Windows boots up.

Okay so all of our stuff from our old computer got put onto a My Book because the computer stopped working. So im trying to transfer everything (documents, pictures, itunes) from the My Book onto my laptop and i dont get how. Thanks for the help!
Answer: Mybook is an external hard drive, correct? Use the USB connector that came with the Mybook and connect it to your laptop. The laptop should automatically notice there is a new piece of hardware. Next, go into My Computer on your laptop and double-click on the new Mybook drive. Then you will be able to move all of the files on there onto your laptop by dragging and dropping them onto your desktop, into folders, etc.

It does not seem likely, but I thought I would confirm. It seems the Mybook is 3.5 whereas laptop disks are 2.5. I just want to confirm if this is true without opening anything up.

How do I move itunes and iphoto over to my 500 GB mybook?
Im trying to move the programs and/or files from iphoto and itunes to clear up the hard drive of my mac. Ive tried just dragging the songs then it is just files without itunes. I tried to download a new itunes program and put it directly on this new hard drive but it wont let me.
Answer: ok, so here's what i would do, first of all, i want to warn you that this will move everything in your library, so if you were trying to only move some of your lessor used songs and videos, this isn't the way to go.
go into itunes preferences and to to the advanced tab and on the general tab under that note the itunes music folder location and click change and select a folder on your Mybook drive that you want all your music moved too. confirm that the itunes music folder location has changed and leave preferences
now go to the advanced menu in itunes and "consolidate library" and ok any prompts or warnings and it will begin copying your music and library to your new location.

get files from mybook essential western digital external hard drive without usb?
How can I get the data from my 1tb Mybook essential western digital external hard drive without a usb connector? The usb came off from the inside of the HD, and so I got a replacement enclosure, which I have now, but all my files are encrypted when I try to use it on the new enclosure. Is there a way to get my files off still?
I forgot to mention, Im using a mac.
Answer: Encrypted? Strange.
You can try something though, and I think it will work.
Download Ubuntu: http://nl.releases.ubuntu.com/releases//lucid/ubuntu-10.04.2-desktop-i386.iso
Ubuntu is an Operating System like Windows, but Linux-based. You don't have to install it, because it can run from the CD itself (pretty neat eh).
Download the ISO, burn it onto a CD (using either Windows' own burning tool, or by using DeepBurner (http://www.deepburner.com)
Restart your PC, and boot up from CD. Select "Run from CD".
Now the system will start. Hook up your external HDD and see if it shows up, If it does, go to it, and try to copy files to your own hard drive. I think you will find your way around.

i have a 500GB Mybook western digital external hard drive and it came with software on it. such as a computer backup tool, google chrome etc. i dont want any of this stuff. i only use it to store media. can i just delete it or is it going to cause problems if i do?

Answer: Yes, you can delete it if you wish.
I have the Western Digital My Book 1.5TB.
It came formated to FAT32, and I simply formatted it to NTFS (NTFS allows for larger files, which is why I formatted it)... Which deletes everything off the drive.
The drive will function just fine without the software.
You don't need the software on the drive or on your computer at all.

I have a WD Mybook essential edition 500GB external HD and when I plug it into my Macs USB it doesnt recognize the drive anymore. Its running Mac OSX 10.4.11, and this is the first time Ive had any problems with my external HD. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Answer: open a finder windows and go to Applications/Utillities/Disk utility find your HDD on the left colum and format it to a apple parition HFS,GUID, whatever you want except MS-DOS, and MBR

My friend gave me her Mybook to transfer some files to. She has a mac, and I believe that the Mybook is mac formatted. When I plug the Mybook into my pc, it doesnt show up in mycomputer. Is there any way that I can transfer these files to her?
Answer: No. Mac uses a filesystem called HFS+, and Windows cannot write to it. Unfortunately, Linux can't either.
If you want to share files, she'll have to make a FAT32 partition on that drive.

What is the cabling in a WD mybook external hard drive?
My boyfriend opened up my hard drive to fix it, however he says he only took the actual hard drive away and left all cabling, when in fact he has just lost all the internal cabling. So.... can anyone tell me what sort of cable it would be? I have a lot of memorable photos and documents not to mention films etc on it I REALLY want to figure out how to get it working again. Thank you so much in advance.
Answer: It would be a very short SATA or IDE cable depending on what HDD is inside the case and a power cable, also very short. To be honest I don't think replacing them would help though.
I had an external WD hard drive. After 9 months it also failed. The actual hard drive inside is the same as you would find in any computer. It is probably fine, mine was, it's just the case or power supply that's broken.
If you search on Amazon/Ebay etc you can find external hard drive enclosures from as little as £10. Just make sure it is for you hard drive size (2.5" or 3.5") and type (IDE or most likely SATA). They come with all leads, a power supply and instructions.
I would keep an eye on your boyfriend while he sets it up for you though!

How do I keep my Western Digital MyBook External drive from spinning down between accesses?
How do I keep my Western Digital Mybook Essential 500GB External drive from spinning down constantly? WDs website says this feature is built in and cant be changed, but theres got to be a third party utility that will fix this. It is causing a huge lag whenever I want to save/access anything since I use the entire WD drive AS my My Documents folder. Any ideas?
Answer: The spin down is built into the drive and does not take effect until the drive has not been accessed for some time.
I have 2 of these on my PC and it's quite a long wait before they spin down, but then the shortened life of the drives if they didn't is NOT to my mind worth the second or two it takes to spin up again, so I'd say live with it, or save your documents on an internat drive and back them up to the WD Mybook

Can a Western Digital MyBook external backup hard drive have 2 seprate HDs on them?
I have a Western Digital Mybook Studio Edition. I want to backup my Mac, but I dont want to delete the backup files from my PC. Is it possible to backup 2 hard drives and keep them on the external hard drive?
Answer: you will need to partiton the hard drive
this turns one physical disk in to two disks that the computer sees

WARNING partitioning can cause data loss so if you are doing this you need to back up your backed up data (sounds irish i know but if you dont do it and you lose data youve only yourself to blame) before doing the partition

How can I use my WD MyBook external hard drive without the software going nuts?
Ive done everything. Formatted the drive. Etc. Yet for some reason I cant just use my Western Digital Mybook as a simple hard drive! It has this compulsive need to back my shit up, which I dont want it doing. And now it wont let me access it from my linux computer.
Please, I need ideas on how to beat this thing at its own game!
Answer: It sounds like your computer has it set up as a backup disk, not the hard drive itself. You need to disable this feature on your computer before plugging in the Mybook, then try again.
