Components in a stock index?
Hi Folks
I am curious what are the factors that lead to a particular stocks to be accepted stock Index.
Since i am in Singapore, lets take "STI" for instance.
STI (Strait Times Index) are made up of 30 stocks that form this particular index.
All along, i assumed that it was made up of 30 most expensive stocks in the Singapore Market, but when i look into it, I am wrong.
If so, what are the factors that result a particular/certain stock to be included in an index?
I believe the same theory applies to NYSE, NASDAQ etc...

Answer: A particular index is constructed for a specific reason; to track a specific market. The criteria for inclusion of a particular stock is decided by whoever owns the index. For example, somebody may want to track stocks in the resources sector, so they will specifically choose companies which they believe best represent the resources industry.
According to yahoo finance, the STI is a capitalization weighted index, which means that the 30 stocks chosen in proportion to their market capitalization (price * shares outstanding). I believe those with the largest market cap. are selected for the index, rather than just the most expensive stocks.

EVO IX MR or WRX STi (2006 model years)???

Answer: Go for the Evo IX MR. Not only does it look better, it's quicker as well. The engine in the MR sounds smoother at high revs compared to the STi which sounds really rough. The ride will be a little bit different. The Subie gets the thumbs up on this one. Interior amenities are a little consumer friendly than the Evo. It sounds like you are up for multiple mods. All the more you should go for the EVO.

How will reducing the number of constituent stocks in an index affect the index?
Hi, there are recent news that the Straits Times Index (STI) in Singapore will have constituent stocks reduced in number, so that only blue chip stock will remain in the STI. How will that affect the index besides making the index more volatile?
Will that affect share prices of STI ETF 100?

Answer: With all due respect, I disagree with the above person.
The STI should experience higher volatility with only 30 constituents compared to before. While there is a high degree of cross-correlation between the current 50 members of the STI. Furthermore, the 50 STI members tend to have a lower Beta compared to the SGX Composite.
The argument that the Dow has a lower volatility than the Nasdaq is not a fair comparison. The DJIA has a much lower Beta compared to NASDAQ Composite. On the other hand, the DJIA has higher system (diversifiable, company specific risk) compared to the Nasdaq composite. That is, NASDAQ is more sensitive to the "market". In other word, the NASDAQ composite has higher market risk, but lower systemic company risk. The DJIA has lower market risk, but higher systemic risk.
Mathematically, you need about 80 stocks to really remove a lot of the system risk. By reducing the number of stocks from 50 to 30, the index will have a higher degree of volatility. However, the STI components currently have a high degree of cross-correlation - so there should be very little change in beta.

7 x 2 speed shimano 600 sti?
I recently bought an early 90s specialized epic with full shimano 600. There is some lateral play in the 7 speed cassette, and the rear skewers are on really tight. The cassette clunks due to the wiggle room. The brifters index 8 times, so Im a little suspicious that the rear dropout spacing is really 130mm and not 126mm.
A friend is offering a nice 8 speed wheel and cassette for $30.
Would I experience compatibility problems, or did shimano 600 (6400, sti) always use 8 speed cassettes anyways?
Answer: Rear spacing is the space between the rear dropouts, all you have to do to measure it is to remove the rear wheel, and measure the space from the inside of one dropout to the inside of the other. Your loose cassette has nothing to do with rear spacing, you need to have the rear hub serviced. If the brifters index 8 times, they may be 8 speed, so you could possibly install an 8 speed cassette. You would have to check to see if your cassette body is 8 speed compatible when you have the wheel serviced. If the cassette body can't accept an 8 speed cassette, it would have to be changed. If your shifters are indexing correctly with a 7 speed cassette, they won't work with 8 speed, the spacing between cogs is not the same. The bike shop where you have the wheel serviced will be able to tell you whether your bike is 8 speed compatible.

STI shifter upgrade on a 10 speed bike?
Hey guys I recently came up on a 1986 Bianchi Brava 10-speed with an entire Shimano 105 groupo. Everything on it was original and had downtube index shifting. Ive been working on restoring this beautiful bike and I wanted to know if I was able to upgrade to Shimano STI shifters on a 2x5 gear ratio. Let me know what you think, Thanks!
Answer: Shimano does not make an STI shifter that will work with a 5 speed cassette or freewheel. While it is not impossible to install STI shifters on an old bike, it is expensive because of all the parts you need. These include a new rear wheel, and cassette,chain, shifters, new front and rear derailleurs, and a new crankset. You would have to have the rear dropout spacing enlarged to accommodate the new rear wheel. All those parts would cost the better parts of $1000 if you used 105 components again. If the components are in good shape and work well, keep on using them, downtube shifters are not all that inconvenient once you get used to them. I used downtube shifters for years on my commuter bike, which I probably rode more miles every year than my race bike that did have Campagnolo's version of STI shifters. It was no big deal

Massive improvement over the softened down MY08-10 "hatch" STi in terms of handling and presence. Still more comfortable than the Evo and on par in performance too.
If you want a no-frills rally weapon, look at an older model STi, 97-99 or 03-05 are the best generations of them.

Why does investor/speculator/fund chase after already very high stock market? Risk of sharp correction?

Answer: There is always a risk of a sharp correction in a strong bull market. However a correction implies that the long-term trend is still positive. A bear market is where the long-term trend is negative. To answer your specific question, you should see if the P/E ratio has increased significantly in the recent run up.
If the P/E ratio of the index has soared then the market is in trouble because it means buyers are paying more than before for the same earnings. If the P/E ratio has not moved higher the market may not be overvalued.
Finally, the trend around the world is for interest rates to rise so this doesn't help stock markets but there is, apparently, boatloads of cash searching for investments so around the world, stock markets are still strong. This will change very quickly if there is an unexpected "event" that destroys this global complacency.
Right now - I don't think you will miss much if you sit on the sidelines - but that is my opinion.

Would a downtube friction gear shifter be compatible with an indexed front deraileur?
Im basically looking for a cheap way to get my shifting system functioning again, and lacking the financial wherewithal to shell out for a new set of Shimano 105 STi levers I thought it might be possible to simply install a downtube shifter for my front deraileur (Shimano 105, double chainring). The issue is that my STi lever performed indexed shifting, whereas I believe most downtube front shifters operate friction shifting. If anyone has any advice about compatibility, or anything else for that matter, then Id appreciate it!
Answer: As mentioned the indexing is done by the shifter, the neat thing if you do use friction shifters is that you can trim the derailleur to a fine degree. With an index shifter you have limited trim and the actual shifting will need periodic cable adjustments, something you don't have to mess with much on a friction shifter.
