Millions of us spend weekends trawling the internet and poring over ancestry sites and magazines. We are glued to television programmes such as the BBC series Who Do You Think You Are?.
a poem published in my town newspaper what do you think? my last one today.?
Flashing me a sign.
Orange and yellow lights,
Flashing all around,
Black and white bodies,
Seem to litter the ground,
I watch the children crying,
Asking their mother why,
Talk of peace,
Fills peoples minds,
But no that’s too profound,
For not even a blood hound,
Can find all the bodies,
That are hidden in these grounds,
Found one after another,
They seem to be worth more than gold,
Or so the presses are told,
Blood flows down our streets,
Shining like the sea,
Though that’s where I am headed,
Before they find the killer is me.
Answer: Can I just say that this type of working is fantastic, it is raw, unique flows correctly, good grammar and has an awsome hit, that finds the reader quizing the faces they see every day, does a killer hide behind each mask that we as humans portray in our everyday lives, love it, keep up the great work.

Have Muslims done enough to fight terrorism?
Liberals want us all to believe, terrorists are an extremely tiny, fringe group of extremists.
Well, there were millions of Muslims celebrating in the streets after 911, as if there team won the Super Bowl, World Cup and World Series, in the same day. Millions of Muslims were celebrating but liberals and their media are selling the public, terrorists are a tiny, tiny group of extremists.
From a global perspective, the only thing we see from Muslims, they want to go on record , they dont support terrorism. BUT, we do not see Muslims leading the fight against terrorism. We dont see Muslims doing much of anything but claiming they are unfairly profiled and unfairly discriminated.
Liberals and their media, sell a giant lie that millions of Muslims do not condone terrorism. Liberals are in fear that their political opponent would gain political power, should republicans be given credit for protecting Americans from terrorism, SO, liberals choose to side with terrorists, to promote propaganda, to hide the reality of millions of Muslims, who want every infidel murdered.
How many millions of Muslims would be celebrating if Israel was driven into the sea and evey Jew murdered?
We all know, liberals will always do whats best for their ideology, party before country, is the socialist mantra.
Just because there are millions of Muslims who do oppose terrorism, should we believe the millions of Muslims who do support terrorism, do not exist, as liberals want us to believe.
Is the Muslim population doing enough to end terrorism?
Flashman- Christian society is tolerant, there is no persecution for different religous views, in strict Islam culture, you would be murdered for the slighest infraction of Muslim law.
Christians do not want Muslims murdered, unlike a large per centage of their cultrue want every infidel dead. So, there would be no celebration is Muslims were killed.
Answer: How many Americans would be celebrating if every Muslim was driven into the sea?

What shoes should I wear in NYC?
So i love going to nyc, i go there all the time and i always have the problem with shoes. I am an obsessed runner so i always end up wearing my old running shoes around the city with long jeans to kind of hide them. I can never find any comfortable, affordable yet incredibly fashionable-functional shoes for those long walks through manhattan. And what kind of bag should i carry with me? I love some of the bags i see around like on Canal St. and at the South street sea port, im not too picky but i know some of those knock-off bags would get me scoffed at. Are there any brand-less or affordable purses around the city? Not sure what to do about the shoes or Bag
Answer: well there;'s cute bags everywhere, just go for ones without brand names on them if you thinkpeople will know they're kockoffs (chances are they won't!). but as for shoes, i have the same problem, i never know what shoes to wear.i have soe reallly cute heels but who wants to walk around manhattan in 4 inch heels. i usually just wear some funky sneakers or now that it's cold out boots are perfect! try all those discount shoe places by penn station, they have some really cute and very affordable shoes!

What is the song Sullivan Street by counting crows about?
Does anyone know?
Here are the lyrics...
Take the way home that leads back to Sullivan Street
Cross the water and home through the town
Past the shadows that fall down wherever we meet
Pretty soon I wont come around
Im almost drowning in her sea
Shes nearly fallen to her knees
Take the way home that leads back to Sullivan Street
Where all the bodies hang on the air
If she remembers, she hides it whenever we meet
Either way now, I dont really care
Im almost drowning in her seas
Shes nearly crawling on her knees
Shes down on her knees
Take the way home that leads back to Sullivan Street
Im just another rider burned to the ground
Im almost drowning in her sea
Shes nearly crawling on her knees
Its almost everything I need
Im down on my knees
Im down on my knees
Answer: "My last girlfriend, for the first month and a half that we were going out, her mother was living with her, and her mother's very Catholic. We couldn't spend the night together, so I was constantly making these drives in the middle of the night -- very surreal, four in the morning, falling asleep. I really believed in the relationship, but when I was writing this song the lyrics came out: 'Pretty soon I won't come around'. It wasn't what I wanted -- I didn't want it to end -- but there it was. It's about the inevitability of leaving."
- Adam Duritz, lead singer of Counting Crows
This song is one of my favorite off "August and Everything After". I personally love the line "I'm almost drowning in her seas"; I see that as a metaphor for someone being dragged down by the problems or issues of the other person.

Could someone critic my writing, Please?
Ill gladly take comments from anyone, but I would very much appreciate the opinion of another author - or at least someone with a little experience or knowledge of the sorts.
Im working on two books at the moment.
Well, three actually - but the third is still in the brain-storming stage.
The first, which I started a couple years back but have yet to find time to complete, is called "When the Songbird Cries"
Its told through the eyes of a man in his early 20s - Chris, whose closet friend - Vanessa - is shot and killed in a convenient store heist. The woman has a young daughter - Elizabeth, but no next of kin - so Chris takes custody of her. I cant tell you the rest, obviously - I dont want to give away the book just yet.
Anyway, here is an excerpt from the first chapter:
"The air was cold. The breeze sent chills parading up and down my spine. I walk the lonesome path watching my every step closely, for in the midst of winter one false move could decide ones fate. As I arrive the reverend is speaking slowly, audibly trying to control his tone. There were dahlias everywhere. Her favorite. Several moments of silence pass as they begin to lower the casket into the snow enshrouded earth. If I were to listen closely enough, I could almost hear the freezing tears hit the ground."
And here is another excerpt from chapter ten, once the story is a bit more developed:
"The swoosh of the cash draw darting open pulled me back down to earth. I gazed out the front window as the register printed our sales receipt, bored with the habitual task. A young couple walked by, their hands linked. Then a older man walking a Golden Retriever; followed by two laughing children, their mother trailing behind them. They all seemed so pleasant, too pleasant to be a part of this world - or my world at least. The subtle, glistening frost that glazed the window made then seem even less real to me.
That’s when I saw him. Through the weave of cars that dominated the road, I caught a glimpse of his face. A face I could never forget.
Sven.
I concentrated on the spot where he stood, catching quick glances as the cars allowed. He stood, half hidden behind a stand of newspapers, staring directly into the store.
He dropped the cigarette in his hand and ground it under his foot, turning to back away from the street. I lost sight of him as a large bus blocked my vantage point. The bus passed in less than a second, but when it did - he was gone."
The second book is called "The Pendent of the Black Sea"
It take place in Aurora, Romania - a coastal town by the Black Sea - in 1896. Its told through the eyes of a 19 year old girl - Catalina - whos father was lost at sea years ago. Her mother has since gone mad, starring out her window at the sea - waiting for her love to return. Catalina owns a pendent she found on the shore when she was a child, but she doesnt know that theres anything out-of-the-ordinary about it - aside from its beauty. Shortly after finding said pendent, she begins to see all the fantastical beings the live around her.
Here is an excerpt from the third chapter:
"One night after super, I went outside and walked along the beach like I once did with Mother. Two weeks had passed since my fathers death, and every one of those nights I’d spent walking these shores beneath the stars. This night, though, was unlike the others. The sky was clear and the full moon shone brightly on the pale sand. As I strode along with my bear feet, something near the water caught my eye.
I walked upon to find a silver pendant half hidden under the cool, wet grains. I gathered the pendent and its chain into my hands. Walking to the edge of the water, I rinsed the sand from the charm. As I held it among my fingers, tilting it this way and that, the moonlight glimmered off its surface. It was the most beautiful thing I‘d ever seen, so you can imagine a child’s delight.
I took it home with me that night and studied it while I lye in bed. It was the size of my palm in all, it had four points to it - like those of a shinning star. Three leaves of ivy formed each point, their stems trailing down into an intricate scroll. In the center of the pendent was an oval made purely from mother of pearl.
How wonderful I thought it was and oh, how I wished I could show Mother; but instead I hid the charm, for fear that my mother might think me a thieve. Never did the necklace stray far from me, though. That night, I slept with my little piece of the sea under my pillow."
and another from chapter 11:
"Again, I was woken by a cry - though, now, one of the rooster perched on the fence post just beyond my window. I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with the cool morning air. I could smell the fresh, damp scent of rain on the breeze flowing through my open window. The golden sun light filtered through the translucent rose curtains the hung from my valance, sending a pleasurable display of
Answer: Okay, I like that you're straightforward. But perhaps you could make Cris more masculine, more rigid (he lost his best friend, he probably suffers from some sense of loss, has some trouble sleeping? on some sorta pills? lost weight? Anger? anger would be great. Y'know, how is he coping with the fact that she is not there anymore?)
So, more masculine, more tough, I guess. You've written from his perspective and he's kinda dainty. I need to read that he's crabby, sometimes has gross habits that aren't fit for a little girl (Elizabeth?), tries to make an effort to insure the little girl is content, that she has everything she needs.
book two sounds interesting. but you need to be careful not to make it sound cheesy. you need to research hard for this one. make it plausible. it's always like that with fiction, trust me.
You seem like a great writer. I wish you could read something I wrote and tell me what you think. If you have MSN that's be awesome.
My MSN is Miss.Green.Romance@hotmail
I would gladly give you an honest opinion. I just turned 18 and I'm in the middle of a book of my own.

Wedding invitation poem?
Just wondering what you think of the following for the first page of our wedding invitation (were having a small booklet with poem, main invitation, directions and rsvp card). Ive searched high and low for something which talks about love, but isnt specific to the couple and I cant find anything so I found these two verses from Bob Dylans Wedding Song and think theyre really nice, but would they be appropriate to have on a wedding invitation?
I love you more than ever, more than time and more than love,
I love you more than money and more than the stars above,
Love you more than madness, more than waves upon the sea,
Love you more than life itself, you mean that much to me.
Ever since you walked right in, the circles been complete,
Ive said goodbye to haunted rooms and faces in the street,
To the courtyard of the jester which is hidden from the sun,
I love you more than ever and I havent yet begun.
Answer: Yeah they are great for the invite

Hey guys what do you think of this for my english...?
Take
In. Without warning, I was doing it again. Uncontrollably. Why? I ask myself that same question everyday; yet, threatening answers are all that are returned. Alarmed, the brisk awakening of reality struck the diminutive sense left within my, no, their insignificant mind, suddenly realising the extensive suffering we have caused. Out.
Perhaps, I’ve been disillusioned by the sweet crispy scent of the lifeless seaweed spread carelessly across the pebbles with the crashing waves inviting me to the hidden idyllic underworld, or the fact the biggest seagull on the coastline had propelled straight for my tuna sandwich. This, either way, is my hideout; my sacred place where I lose all control of feeling and let the ocean take me away. With the sand clenching on to my chipped maroon nail polish and the slight coastal breeze reminding me of that seaweed scent, I gaze at the photograph wondering… wondering what it means.
I must apologise, without even the slightest introduction of myself and, here I am, slightly taking the whole situation a bit too far. Although, how would you react if you found a photograph precariously perched on a wooden bench that had an uncanny familiarity about it? Not too well and besides this could be the missing link to the recent happenings, which have been going on.
In. With the sun slowly but surely making its way to another place, wishing I was going with it, darkness blankets the sky with a array of stars that lighten the streets. Upon them streets am I, the leader; the man; the one who has regrettably ruined a thousand chances of creating something new. However, challenging the task forcefully thrown upon me, my prey oblivious of its predator continues searching its unknown area until it has been done. Out.
Aside from the seagull swooping down to try its luck at snatching another tuna sandwich, I return from my trance at the photograph, assuring myself that the answer is not just going to appear. Beginning to fold it, the difficulty of my body shivering as the temperature plummets to a typical winters evening, makes the task frustratingly aggravating. I never did have much patience but having finally managed to fold the little girl in the photo; the one dressed in a fluorescent orange coat patterned with flowers drowning her from head to toe, I placed it in my back pocket.
Closing my eyes; taking a deep breath in waiting one last time for the sounds of roaring waves to capture me in their enchanting rhythm, with the sea salt spitting in my face luring me to their kingdom. Ring. My eyes shot open to the vibration that engulfed my body, which was then the realisation that I was due back home at least an hour ago hit me. As my feet broke out into a run uncontrollably, I contemplate at the sky above hypnotised by the natural satellite that can always be relied on to act as a personal spotlight. The moon.
Oblivious that my feet have continued to run, while my eyes are fixated at the natural world that is untouchable, I stop. The thought ‘Where am I?’ starts getting louder and faster, simultaneous to my heartbeat, rushing over me like a storm cloud about to strike. Gasping for air, I started feeling smaller, claustrophobic, and weak as the streets began caving in with no way out. As one would expect to turn back and return to where they came from, I could not for this street; this spot was somehow calling my name and telling me I have been here before.
In. Blinded by, what seemed to be, a bright sun covered with flowers, my heart clenched at the expression portrayed through their face. Swallowing the guilt and fear building up in my throat, I continued to hurl the

What if...
Repeated stupidity was the only reason for leaving your children alone. You did feel it was safe. You didnt think anything would happen to your children. You were having such a nice holiday together. Or perhaps, you didnt really care. You chose Mark Warner because of its child-friendly facilities, in essence its babysitting options, creche, kids club etc, you can have a family holiday, but still have some me time as a couple. Or you felt that you were just doing your normal thing of not really looking after the children, because generally the nanny does it. You didnt think about what you have to normally think about when looking after children, and when your nanny cried off, you just didnt expect to have to change your routine.
...
You enjoy your meal at the tapas bar. Because you did actually check very very regularly, you return from your meal at some point in the evening, well before 10pm, to find something untoward had happened to Madeleine in your absence and she was beyond resuscitation. You cannot save her despite your medical qualifications.
Yes medical qualifications. Medical qualifications that you worked so hard for. Medical qualifications that have finally made you consultant level only a few years ago after such hard work. You only just bought a massive house. What of your career? Both your careers? Your house? The rest of your new family? What of your friends who did the same? Self preservation kicks in - you are a group of 9 doctors and spouses and their families all vulnerable to charges according to Portuguese law.
Quick think - what is worse than a case of clear neglect from which you will not escape justice (with its possible jail sentence/end of careers), even though you did not have a direct hand in the event? You must do something. You cannot own up to this neglect. You must not own up to this neglect. What can diminish your own culpability in this whole sorry episode?
Abduction! Yes, tell everyone that it is an abduction.
Man carrying girl in blanket at 9.30pm or whatever time it was. Your friend spots this man. Your friend is in turmoil and tries to take her own life. Because what she saw was actually real. Could this man be someone we know already or in the group of people we know already, could this man be going to the marina? Could this man be going to the sea? Could this man be spotted crossing the street? You know that if you want to hide something forever, you could weigh it down and throw it in sea, far enough away from tidal influence. It would not be found, ever.
...
Your wife goes to the apartment to check. Theyve taken her she screams. You go to the apartment. You roar like a bull. Every parents ultimate nightmare has come horribly true. Its an abduction! But lets make sure shes not slipped out of the apartment first. Make sure shes not been run over or drowned in the pool. Get people to search. Get the manager. In the commotion of the ensuing search, the man who carried the bundle returns to the scene, mingles, helps with the search.
Calls are made frantically to family and friends in the UK. Mention about the apartment being broken into. Tell everyone it was no doubt in your mind it was an abduction. Tell everyone about the jemmied shutter. Tell your family and friends in the UK. They are horrified and rally round in a spectacular and totally unexpected way. A family friend puts up £100K just like that.
Despite outward promotion of an abduction, you let the cleaners in the next day. Any residual evidence of last nights incident will be cleaned away.
You do grieve, because you have lost her. In fact the first week you are and look terrible, particularly your wife, but you know you must keep it together for this all to work. You keep a check on your wife and a hand on her at all times because she looks like she could crack any minute. Yes, you do grieve, but you know she is at peace. You dont need to torment yourself that she is at the hands of some vile paedophile, you dont need to think of all the awful things that could possibly be happening to her, you dont need to think of how frightened she must feel, you dont need to think of where she could possibly be, because you know. You know she is at peace. So you calm.
The police are suspicious. You and your wife are re-interviewed separately. Another couple who were part of the group are re-interviewed also. Is the timeline piquing some interest? You keep calm.
You aim for normality, because you know that what life will be like because you are already there, you already know the outcome. This is it now, you, your wife and your remaining children. You play happy families, you jog, you have no problem with getting a new wardrobe, your wife has a new hairstyle. This is normality. This is it. This is the future. This is how you must live from now one, you, your wife and your remaining children. Your grief doesnt, and out of necessity shouldnt, last long. You are back in the black. The almost unconditional support you have had from the media and millions of others has given you comfort that you are doing the right thing, and behaving the right way.
You diminish your neglect on TV. You say thousands do it. You say you didnt leave them alone. You say you felt safe as you thought the resort had CCTV. You explain that you left the door unlocked because of possible fire. You do not at any time admit that you were wrong in leaving three children under the age of four years old alone in an unlocked apartment room. You know you cannot admit any negligence. In fact total avoidance of that charge has been your ultimate aim throughout all of this. It doesnt matter that your explanations diminish the rights that your child had to security, safety and comfort, because its all too late for that now. Your child doesnt come into it any more.
You hire topshot QCs to protect you just in case of any negligence claims.
...
The media campaign rolls out beyond your control. You come round to it. Hey, this is a good thing. Campaign becomes focus of everything. You know she will not be found. You dont mention her, you dont plea for her return. You know you dont need to mention her, you know you dont need to plead for her return. Offered to say something, you say, rather emptily, she knows we love her. The group that you are with and certainly the other couple in the group dont say anything.
The money rolls in, it becomes the focus. You cannot thank people enough for donating, You compare your loss to loss of money. Its OK. Focus. You go from country to country to promote the campaign. You aim is to increase awareness even though things are at saturation point already. You increase it still even though such awareness may have had adverse effect if your child was still alive. But you can carry on regardless because the focus is on the campaign, on the money. You dont need to focus on your child so much. Your wife says so. It helps you so much. Your wife agrees it is helping you so much. The campaign is so important. The campaign. The campaign.
Letters and leads come in. You dismiss them within 24 hours quite readily on your blog, because you know they will not be genuine. You organise events for months ahead. You continue your blog on the campaign website. Its important to keep this up. Because when the media finally is not interested anymore, you truly do not have anything left but the money from the campaign. So the more you can keep the campaign up, the better.
End of quote_________________
Answer: Interesting theory. If this is a possible scenario a secret is only a secret if one person knows. The moment you tell someone else it is no longer a secret. So, on the assumption that this or something like this happened, sooner or later being such a momentous enormous awful secret someone would have to tell someone else. This would surely be so burdensome to that other person that they would have to confide in another.
Do you see what I am getting at. Sooner or later it would or will be a secret that someone will not be able to keep, either through greed at the size of the fund or more likely their conscience.
It has been two months, surely whatever the truth whoever knows what happened must be bursting to tell someone, anyone by now.

Trail of the unexpected: James Joyce in Trieste
This Thursday, thousands will congregate in Dublin – and Buffalo, Buenos Aires and other cities – to celebrate Bloomsday, the day in 1904 on which all the action of James Joyces novel Ulysses takes place. Ironically, no Bloomsday razzmatazz is planned for Trieste, the city where Joyce spent more than 15 richly creative years between 1904 and 1920.
Charm in citys contradictions
THE contrast between soaring architecture and grubby public places is part of the unique charm of Paris.
Have you ever contemplated . . . Growth?
There really was, and presumably still is, an ancient oak in a public park near where I used to live. It was known as Hooker Oak. Please comment, if so inclined.
Growth
Near a place where once I lived
there stood a massive ancient Oak
taller than any tale sailors tell
wider than the street that took me there
older than the patriarchs in town
who sit around relating stories of their own
about the gold still hidden in the hills
and icy streams flowing down to join
the sea which swells in regularity
of tides impelled by forces of a moon
that some will say was once a part
of Earth before humanity had formed
any notion of itself or how it came to be
that I am finally cutting down that tree.
Milieu: Youve entirely missed the point of this piece.
Also to Milieu: My earlier remark was NOT intended to be unkind! I sincerely appreciate your input and have the highest regard for your comments. Thank you for sharing your opinion.
Answer: In the final line I want to see that as a metaphor. If wrong I apologize, but related to the piece both realistically, metaphorically, and sadly in the real, given that it happened in our town.
Progress, such a bitter word or thought to digest
at the behest of someone in power
wanting a new Library.
The motion was past, the tree had to go,
"It's in the way, will continue to grow, unless we cut it down."
All those in town gathered that day, prayed as slowly the century old tree
was carted away.
One very elderly man stood to say his piece, out loud,
"I hope y'all go home proud. I sat under it's boughs as a child
it held me, leaning as I was learning how to read.
You did us all a disservice today, not standing your ground
as this Ancient Oak did for you.
Enjoy the concrete glass and steel
and anything you find to read
about a once noble tree."
Irony is such a wondrous thing,
from that replanted, landscaped ground
sprouted dozens of infant Oak trees.

In the city of Misrata, children bear the brunt of the on-going Libyan conflict
MISRATA, Libya, 6 June 2011 – On a hospital bed in the besieged Libyan city of Misrata, five-year-old Malak Al-Shami flicks through pictures of her brother and sister on her fathers laptop. Three weeks ago the three children were asleep at home when a rocket smashed through the ceiling of their house.

I have to write a short story with a theme about fear?
Alright i have a short story due tomorrow and i want the theme to be fear here WAS my idea:
A girl is walking in the night and she is scared because theres scary noises and all of that stuff.
I tried to make it more juicy so i turned it into:
A girl is walking home in the dark night and she heard there is a killer on the loose. She is scared as she seas a man running across the street. She hides behind a building and decides its only going to get darker and creepier out. She goes home.
I change the story again:
A woman goes out wth her friends and theyre walking home in the dark night. One of them informed the others before about a killer on the loose. One of the girls goes home and begs them to stay at her house for the night. The same with the other girl. The woman refuses both times. Then she becomes afraid. She is scared as she seas a man running across the street. She hides behind a building and decides its only going to get darker and creepier out. She goes home. She notices clues about the killer in her house. She cant fall asleep. Yadadadada you see the point.
I really like the plot and stuff but:
1. I dont see what the theme about fear would be and
2. I realized the third one is exactly like a book i just read only when she gets home shes killed.
So:
How can I change the story to make it my own? and How can I fit the theme into this?
Ok guys i hv to read this in front of my class sooo...
Answer: i like the plot but its a little overplayed, you know?
you could have it so she sees clues that the killer is in her house, and then see gets into bed and curls up to her husband (shes glad hes home to protect her) who is already asleep. her husband turns around and it turns out to be the murder, and as he kills her, she sees her dead husband in the closet, hung by a rope.
thats kinda twisted, but its pretty effing scary dont cha think? and you could really play it up like it was her husband. "i scurried into my bedroom to see him lying in bed, my husband, that is. i could recognize his firm, toned body anywhere, lying there in his usual boxers and wife beater. without changing, i crawled in beside him and curled up against his warm body. i was safe now." you get my point?

Do you think the opening paragraph of my story is well written?
It was late March and the broad, delicate autumn leaves that once adorned the maples of Lisbon Street now lay in a thick blanket of orange and red. The concrete, cracked and uneven from the endless pounding of sneakers and dirty paws, was completely hidden by the layer of vibrant foliage.
By the time the old man rounded the corner, the afternoon breeze had begun to creep under this crimson carpet, lifting the leaves from the path, raising them gently, furtively into the air. Each leaf floated languidly for a second, turning in midair before being snatched by another gust of wind. Some were tossed in the direction of the road; some were hurled sideways into brick walls or grimy shop windows.
The old man stared intently at the polished brown leather of his shoes, which he dragged along the footpath, completely oblivious that to the fact that the red sea of Lisbon Street was, quite literally, parting before him.
Sorry, Ill rephrase:
"Do you the think the OPENING of my story is well written?"
Answer: i think it's written really well; extremely poetic. i like that you're not giving away too much too early.
you seem to be going into a lot of detail about the leaves - it's really good but maybe not so much info on the way the leaves fall and dance? it draws the focus away from the old man a little too much...if he is supposed to be the main subject..otherwise....good work!

why did god talk and appear to large groups of people but only before recorded history? bit strange isnt it?
Here is a line of reasoning that Christians will frequently use to try to rationalize the complete lack of evidence for Gods existence. In the book "The Case for Faith," the author Lee Stroble interviews Peter Kreeft, Ph.D. Dr. Kreeft says the following:
"Scripture describes God as a hidden God. You have to make the effort of faith to find him. There are clues you can follow. And if that werent so, if there was something more or less than clues, its difficult for me to understand how we could really be free to make a choice about him."
Clues? Hidden? According to the Bible God incarnated himself. He created an entire human body named Jesus. That is not a "clue" -- that is a huge, obvious piece of evidence. It is very hard to "hide" a 170-pound human being who is running around performing miracles on every street corner. Then you collect the stories of those miracles and publish them in a book. Where is the hiding in that?
There are examples of Gods desire for publicity throughout the Bible. The best known is Gods parting of the Red Sea in the book of Exodus, chapter 14:
Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.
That is impressive, and it is utterly obvious. Thousands of Israelites witnessed this event. There are many other events that are equally obvious: manna from heaven, the Ten Commandments carved onto stone tablets, the Passover massacre and so on. All of it is described in the Bible, which God wrote so that billions of people can read about these events and experience them vicariously today.
It is pretty hard to hide something that you do in front of thousands of people and then describe and publish in billions of books. Clearly God is not a hidden God.
But there is an even more impressive sign that we often forget. If God exists and God wrote the Bible, then rainbows are actually proof that God exists. God is not hiding at all. If you read Genesis 9:12-13 you will find this:
And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth..."
What could be more obvious than that? God left a sign for all future generations, according to the Bible. Clearly God does not want to hide.
There are also plenty of cases in the New Testament. For example, Matthew, Chapter 17:
After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."
While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"
These are not exactly the actions of a God in hiding. Apparently the free wills of Peter, James and John were not that important to God. And again it is published in the Bible so that billions of other people can read about it.
Or take this passage from the book of Matthew, Chapter 3:
As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."
Again, not exactly a hidden God.
Or this passage from the book of Luke, Chapter 2:
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Lets go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."
The free will of the shepherds was certainly tarnished a bit here.
In 1 Corinthians 15:6
