Answer: In Bangkok, take a trip up the river and go and visit the canals. You'll be off the beaten track and you'll see how people live on the river. It's not all pretty, but it's very natural.
Ask at your hotel and try to get a local guide and boat. You're looking for someone who knows the smaller canals, not just the touristy ones.
Good luck with the trip, it's a beautiful country and the people are excellent. They don't mind you taking photos and they're always smiling.

trying to find my husbands father. we believe that he is of Chinese origin, but he may have ties to Thailand. we know that he has lived in houston, tx and somewhere in california. he is between 48-50 years old and we believe his birth month is October. if you can offer any help in finding him or suggestions on how to find him with such limited information, please let us know.
Answer: So your search is from Texas to California and Chinese to Thailand. A rather big area with little information. I doubt I could help you anyway but give you advice. If your going to post here at least give enough information so someone may be able to help. You posted this in a Thailand travel forum. Thailand is a good size country you don't even say where in Thailand he has ties. Good luck your going to need it.

How Long would you spend in Pai Thailand and what would you do?
I am traveling through south-east asia and putting together an epic tripa dn look to spend a little time up here chilling out.
Answer: I've not been staying in Pai, but have been staying in Mae Hong Son several times.
A plethora of activities are available, including exploring the countryside by foot, motorbike, elephant or bamboo raft, while there's plenty to see. The mountainous scenery and proximity to borders with several other neighbouring countries means several ethnic minority groups have settled in the area, and waterfalls can be visited during day trips.
So, it depends on how long time you have and how long time you want to do those kind of activities.

Life if short... I want to escape society?
As in Pai, Thailand? Its apparently a hippie haven full of nice people, dirt cheap too. We could build and open up our own resort using clay houses and bamboo (which is what many others have successfully done) - or maybe even start a commune? Im fucking sick of the city and Western culture, and life is short. Im not happy living here anymore and Im craving this so badly. The only thing youd have to really save up for the plane ticket there.
Whos with me? Ive emailed a number of independently own resorts asking if they need people to help with cleaning, cooking, and building for free stay.
Answer: That sounds like a great idea. I would look elsewhere, however. The Thailand government is globalized and wants people who have a lot of cash before they settle in. However, there are other options.
Many Westerners have chosen to disappear into remote cultures with bad transportation access, no communication, and no Western medicine. As a vegan in good health, I find that having no Western medicine may actually have benefits. Most medical interventions tend to treat symptoms rather than the cause of diseases. I'd go for broken bones, but I'd use proper nutrition to cure heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and prevent stroke.
Some of the happiest, healthiest, most physically fit, and long-lived people live in the most remote parts of the world. They respect elders and work inter-generationally. These people eat fresh vegetables and hard physical labor.
I'd go to the highlands of Equador where the temperatures are about the same year round and there is an abundance for fresh, whole, plants to eat.

Answer: Agree with the previous poster about the Phuket Vegetarian festival.
You should also see the Spirits Festival and the Loy Krathong festival in November in Chiang Mai - thousands of floating lanterns are placed on the canals at night.
The tigers at the Thailand Tiger Temple in Kanchanaburi are definitely worth visiting for photos, as is the gigantic Buddha statues at Sukhothai, Thailand's equivalent to Angkor Wat.

Travelling Thailand for a month?
Hi,
I am currently planning for a months trip in Thailand and would like to know wheres worth a look. I have been before and stayed in Bangkok, Pai, Koh Phagnan and Koh Tao so would like to steer clear of these areas. I would like to keep it mainly down south so would like to know the best islands and beaches for things to do but that are relatively low key - I dont want to be swamped with tourism. Hope you can help!!!
Answer: Phuket is obviously going to be busy most of the time. I've spent a great deal of time in Krabi and Khao Lak, which tend to be much more relaxed spots than Phuket or even Samui when it comes to the number of tourists (I would just keep in mind that high season is still in full effect). Krabi has tons of natural sites to see & it makes it easy to get to places like Koh Phi Phi.
The one really nice thing about Khao Lak is that snorkeling or diving at the Similan Islands or Koh Surin is a quick boat ride away.
Also check out Koh Lanta as an additional option.

Answer: My father travels to Thailand frequently and I have a Thai friend here in The U.S. I enjoy their photos of Thailand, especially any photo that shows "normal" life conditions. There is a photo of my father's that I pour over often for more insights. It's just a street scene in a Thai modern village. I didn't understand my father's affection for Thailand until I saw that photo. But, then I saw from that street scene that my father, and a LOT of other older people from the U.S., travel there because some of Thailand seems to be at about the same socio-economic stage of development as were small towns in the U.S. back in the 20's and 30's, when they were young. Thailand reminds my father of a world more familiar and comfortable to him than does the U.S. as it is today. For example, in my father's photo of a Thai community, there's a little boy about nine years old. My father told me that the boy lived in the back of a grocery shop and worked there for a living. He said that the boy was safe and sound and well liked. My father could relate to the boy because, even though our laws wouldn't allow that here today in the U.S., we once did, during my father's youth. I suggest exploring the images in Thailand that appeal to the Depression Era American.
