For christmas, my dad got me a pet snake. She is the most beautiful creature ever! Anyway, my parents are split up and I change houses every week. My mom said my new friend isnt allowed at her house. How can I convince my mom to let me bring her with me as I switch houses every week? I know shell be oka with my snke in the house, my dad knows it will be OK, you people out here probablly know y mom il be ok with snake in the house, but how do I tell her that?
Answer: A fear of snakes is learned, not inherited. Also anyone can overcome their fears if they are willing. It's entirely up to your mother as to whether or not she chooses to tolerate the snake.
From your mother's point of view, it is her house and so she can decide what stays and what goes. She is within her right to deny your pet snake a home in her house.
However, from your position it would also be fair to say that you are her child and your happiness should matter very much to her.
You can try to show that the snake means very much to you and would like to keep it as a constant companion. The snake may bring about a sense of stability in an otherwise ever changing situation. I wouldn't bother with trying to get her to like the snake, because she won't. You can try to convince her that the snake's presence will have very little impact on her. If you must, the snake will remain hidden while it stays in her home. The less she sees or thinks about the snake, the better its chances of remaining are.
A person's fear of snakes is not a matter to be taken lightly. It's a very irrational fear, and if you press the issue your mother may behave badly. She might kill the snake without thinking. I would suggest approaching the situation very carefully.
Being a snake owner includes having to cope with the idea that many people will hate your snake. They cannot be reasoned with, and if pushed to far may try to convince you of the evilness of the snake or at worst will kill the creature you treasure very much.

How can I convince my mom to let me go to the movies with my friends without her?
I am 14 and Im pretty much responsible when my mom asks me to do something, I want to go to the movies with my friends (a big group of friends). THe movie is age appropriate, I really dont want my mom to come because none of my friends mom come, and its kind of embarrassing! What should i do!
Answer: I'm assuming that you're in Jr. High/Middle School based on being 14! My school was set up so that students in Jr. High were coming from a bunch of different middle schools in the area. When I was in 7th/8th grade, my parents always asked me about the friends that I wouldn't have known from elementary school because they wanted to make sure I was hanging out with friends that were from the "right crowd"- in other words, girls that didn't drink or do anything inappropriate and mature (btw if you DO already drink at your age... that isn't a very good thing and it would probably be better if you tried to stop!). This is gonna sound really cheesy, but bear with me here ;)... 14 is around the age where a lot of change can occur- I changed a lot during this time because I became WAY more sociable and changed who I hung out with, my hair, and my clothing because I decided it would be cool if I made myself more presentable! On the OTHER end of things, I could've chosen friends that were into drinking, smoking, and drugs, friends that didn't care what they did, etc.
So what am I trying to get at here? Your mom is looking out for you, and respect her for being a good mom! Believe me, there are moms out there who don't care about their kids and the kids end up in TOTALLY the wrong crowd! If I were you, maybe invite your friends over to your house sometime for a night of pizza, games, movies, whatever (maybe not a sleepover the first time). Just time where your mom can supervise you guys and so you can kind of indirectly show her that your group of friends is responsible enough to have a night to hang out and go shopping or to the movies "by yourselves"!
The absolute worst thing you could do is tell your mom straight out "Hey mom, you're not coming with us." Imagine somebody SO CLOSE to you telling you to back off. It could potentially ruin the special bond that you and your mom share, and once the damage is done, there is NO going back! Respect your mom, and make sure she knows how much you love her! By doing this, she will see that you're really mature and could handle a movie night with friends :)

How do I convince my mom that getting a Parakeet wont become another responsibility of hers?
Im so close! My step dad says its up to my mom. He said his main concern is that it will become another thing my mom has to take care of. I know 110% that i would be the only one taking care of the bird because no one else in the family knows about birds except me. So, how am I supposed to convince my mom that she wouldnt be taking care of the bird?
Answer: A lot of kids say that it will never become their parent's responsibility, but most of them can never keep that promise. It's not because they're bad kids, it's just because they don't understand the commitment that comes with keeping a bird.
Firstly, birds (including budgies) are NOT easy pets. They take a lot of time and trouble to properly take care of. You have to do a lot of research on them; what their proper diet requirements are, caging requirements, toys, training, and lots of other things.
Secondly, it can be a matter of money. Purchasing a parakeet is more than picking the colour you like from the pet store, and getting the cheapest cage, and the cheapest toys, and the cheapest food. It's VERY important not to skimp on these things. You'll learn that a good number of "parakeet" sized cages that pet stores tend to carry are unrealistically small for ANY bird.
(On a side note there, I recommend not getting a parakeet from a pet store. You should find a local reputable breeder who can supply you with a friendly, happy, healthy parakeet. Trust me on that, it's better.)
Also on the money end of things, read this: http://www.aviannetwork.com/main/poem.htm What that poem is trying to say is that many people will let their "cheap" birds die of illness because the vet care required is far more expensive than the bird itself was. That shouldn't matter.
What I'm saying with all of the money stuff is this: Who would be paying for this bird's needs, you or your parents? If it's all on them, isn't that something that has become "their responsibility?" Even if they don't see it that way, are they willing to help you provide the best for your parakeet- even if it get sick?
Moving on. What about when you move out on your own? Are you absolutely sure that you will be able to take your parakeet with you? Most college dorms will not let you have a pet, so you'd have to make sure you could get a place of your own and in doing so make sure that you can still afford to take proper care of your parakeet.
After telling them that, I've had one kid tell me "I'm sure the bird would have died by then." Parakeets can live longer than dogs. That's why it's such a huge commitment to get a bird.
Training a bird is not an easy task. If you get upset and frustrated with the process, can you be positive that you won't give it up and decide you don't like parakeets?
The only way to truly convince your parents that you can handle the parakeet all on your own is to KNOW that you can. Have you asked yourself these questions? Have you done your research on how to take proper care of a parakeet? If the answer is no, then you're not ready. We have a lot of parakeets at the shelter where I volunteer because people answered no to those questions, but bought a bird anyway. If you want to avoid that, you need to take this seriously.
If the answer to those questions is yes, however, and you've done all you can to prepare yourself to keep a parakeet- then you just have to be able to show your parents what you know. Show your mom that you know the commitment and responsibility involved, and that you're willing to take it on. A good way to get on any mom's good side is to do dishes, laundry, and any other household chores that come to mind completely unprompted. Show her that you're responsible. Show her that you can do it.
I don't say any of these things to be mean- I just want to be honest with you. If you're going to do this, you should do it right, after all. I wish you nothing but the best of luck!

Answer: You mom may have put the home in your names, but who is the legal owner on the deed? If it is the 5 of you, then you would have capital gains if you sold the house. The good thing is that capital gains are taxed at a maximum rate of 15%, and 5% if the person would be in the 10 or 15% bracket without the gain (for 2008 the 5% tax will be replaced by a 0% tax for those in the 10 or 15% bracket). The capital gain would be the difference between what the house was sold for, and what it was bought for by your mom, plus all the improvements over the years. Also, if the house was originally owned by your mom & dad, and your dad passed away while still owning his half (or all of the house), there would be what's called a "step-up in basis" for his half or 100% (if he was the sole owner prior to his death). The step-up would be what the house was worth on the date of his death rather than what the house was bought for plus improvements. Any improvements done to the house after his death would be added to the basis of the house to determine the cost basis. If the house is still legally owned by your mother, then as long as she had lived in the house for 2 out of the last 5 years, the house could be sold, and any capital gains up to $250,000 would not be taxed. Don't know your mom's exact situation with the house, but those the various possibilities. Best bet is to talk to a tax attorney, or local CPA in your area about what is best.
