Difference in terminologies: Router, Modem, Broadband?

Im talking about things to do with the internet. I am completely clueless about these. So what is the difference between router, modem and broadband? Do they necessarily mean the same thing? Do they mean a way of transmitting information or do they mean an object which can transmit information? Further, can someone tell me what do you call this thing? Answer: OK Let's see if I can help: Broadband - the ability to connect via a "larger" bandwidth than a typical dial-up. Broadband means just that - broader bandwidth. When you connect to anything (Internet, cable, etc.) you are limited in how big the communications bandwidth is to upload and download information. The old dial-up only allows 56 kps. Where as with broadband you can get as high as 4 Megs or more. Modem - the modem is the device you need to communicate with the service provider - whomever that may be. In the old dial-up days, it was the dial-up modem. For broadband, it is a broadband modem (usually can get one at Circuit City). Router - Once you connect to the Internet with your modem, if you want more than one computer to access - you need to "route" the signal to the other computer. Hence, the router allows you to route the connection to two more more devices so you can have connectivity. Think what would happen if you have 50 people in an office all wanting an Internet connection. They would all need modems and it would be a mess. The router allows a company or household to maintain one Internet connection and route the signal to as many as 4 or 8 devices depending upon the router. Hope that helps.

As I have my own USB device for connecting 3G network, Can I by pass the contract while getting the mobile broadband with M1/Singtel/starhub?
Answer: Some telcos do offer data service without contract, but of course the price is higher. Just check out with the 3 telcos. I did subscribe to Singtel mobile broadband without contract between August - December 2009. im from singapore so this question may not known to some people. i was looking through the singtel promotional broadband contract and i dont understand what is the difference between the contracts.. what is the difference between a ethernet modem and a wireless integrated modem?
Answer: I won't go into technical details....basic difference is that the Ethernet modem will come with a wire which goes into ethernet port in your system.....Wireless can be fitted inot ur computer or else stand alone but will be wireless......

Answer: singnet broadband is using dedicated network means u r not sharing the bandwidth with the other users Starhub is using shared network, means sharing bandwidth with other users. If your block have alot of users, means the speed is slow. for singnet, other the usual customer service (helpdesk) sucks.. the FOC modem 2wire is not compartible with adsl2, but can use for lower speed... if you used for speed 10m above..u will get frequent dc other than above mention point, singnet is quite stable

Are The Broadband Mobile Plans offered by M1/Singtel/StarHub good for UNLIMITED surfing AT HOME too?

My Broadband contract with PI has expired and the renewal plan PI offered is $24.56/mth for 512Kbps unlimited with 1 year contract. However it seems that the other ISPs are offering faster Broadband Plans (eg 1 or 2 Mbps) at cheaper rate ($11.21 or $19.36 per month) with 6 months or 2 years contract. Whats holding me back from changing ISP is PIs termination fee of $42.75 (yes, even though contract is over) and whether these other plans are really UNLIMITED (without any data limit/cap where they charge a lot more for "extra" usage) & whether these plans are good for home-surfing (which is what I do like 100% of the time, rather than surfing with my laptop outdoors). Do these plans offer the "BEST OF BOTH WORLDS" (both indoor and outdoor usage) since they are also cheaper and have shorter contracts as compared to the regular home-surfing plans. Or is there some shortcomings/catch I dont know abt? If you are in my shoes, would you jump ship and change to a cheaper and faster plan? Help!!!
Answer: If its unlimited plan, there is no extra usage charges. If you are talking about data mobile plans, it very much depends on the signal strength received at your home, and how many people are using the mobile plan in your cell (ie. area) at the same time. For a normal web surfer at home, this should be good enough. Note that the normal broadband plan that is based on ADSL or cable will tend to be more stable and have better connection than your mobile plan. It is really a tradeoff qns for you to decide on which you want. If you play a lot of online gaming and video streaming, consider using the normal broadband plan especially when you seldom surf outdoor anyway.

How to calculate the plan for iphone?

Im planning to get an iphone with a classic plan and broadband on mobile value. Singtel says that it can be used to retrieve over 200 emails per month, surf over 300 WAP pages and download 5 songs. What does it mean? Is it i can receive approx 200 emails, open 300 pages and download 5 songs from itunes? Do you think it is enough? I dont use a lot, just average.
