How do ribosomes, RER, Golgi Complex, and the cell membrane function together?
Answer: Ribosomes: functions in protein synthesis. They are not considered a membrane bound organelle. Ribosomes are built from 2 subunits. Its only when these subunits are properly placed together that the ribosome becomes functional. The large subunit is composed of 45 proteins and 3 molecules of RNA while the small subunit consists of 33 proteins molecules and 1 RNA. Fully assembled it measures 20-30 nm. Sometime ribosomes work in units called polysomes.
There are 2 types of ribosomes: bound and free. The bound are found attached to the ER, while the free ones float around in the cytosol. The proteins made by the free will usually stay within the cell, while the bound are destined to become part of the membrane system or exported from the cell.
Endoplasmic Reticulum: consists of a network of membranous tubules and sacs called cisternae. The ER is continuous with the nuclear membrane. There are 2 types of ER: smooth and rough. Smooth does not contain ribosomes where the rough form does.
Rough ER: Antibody production occurs in the rough ER. Many secretory proteins are also produced here. These proteins are glycoproteins, proteins and carbohydrates combined. The carbohydrate is called an oligosaccharide. These secretory proteins are bound in special structures called transport vesicles. The Rough ER is involved with membrane production.
Golgi Apparatus: a series of flattened membranous sacs, stacked like pita bread. The functions are : synthesis, storing, sorting and shipping of materials. The dictysomes have 2 distinct faces: the cis face receives the material and the trans face ships materials. The cis face is close to the ER. The trans face gives rise to vesicles full of material and pinch off.
Exocytosis: Movement of materials out of the cell. These usually are trapped in vesicles that merge with the plasma membrane and release their contents. They are usually produced by the ER or Golgi Apparatus.
Endocytosis: Movement of materials into the cell. This is subdivided based on the type and size of material being transports.
1. Phagocytosis: Plasma membrane surrounding a large solid piece of material or cell, forming a vacuole and digesting it in conjunction with lysosomes.
2. Pinocytosis: plasma membrane forming a vacuole surrounding liquids and taking them into the cell.
3. Receptor mediated: special receptors embedded in the membrane will pick up specific materials and bring them into the cell.

How does the cell membrane function?
Okay, so I know that the cell membrane is made up of a phospholipid bi-layer but I dont really get how things pass through the membrane. The heads of the phospholipids are polar but doesnt that mean it dissolves in water??? Also, water is able to pass though the membrane....but wouldnt the fatty acid ends of the phospholipid repel it or something???
