What are those numbers associated with durian fruit in Malaysia?
Im in KL at the moment and whenever I see durian fruit they also advertise numbers e.g. D24, D99, D101 etc... what do these numbers mean. I was in a restaurant today that said they only serve D24 so I assume its either a standard or quality etc...
Also, my hotel forbids durian fruit in the rooms, I assume this is because of the smell, am I right in this assumption?

Answer: that's the grade of durians..some cheap, some are more expensive, depends on the size, taste etc..
yeah, hotel forbids durian maybe because it causes uncomfortable condition to other customers..
in southeast asia, that strong smell is considered like a fragrance, and mouth-watering..

What is the recipe for a durian pancake?

Answer: Hi try this one.....I found on the internet. Not bad i thought. Tasted ok and easy enough to buy the ingredients and make.
Ingredients
90g grated coconut flesh
1 egg
140g rice flour
1 1/2 tablespoons arrowroot flour
2 ripe bananas, mashed
50g durian
170g palm sugar, shaved
250ml coconut cream
vegetable oil
120ml palm sugar caramel
passion fruit ice cream
[edit]Procedure
Mix coconut flesh with the flours.
In a separate bowl, mash the bananas and durian, and then add palm sugar, egg and coconut cream and mix thoroughly.
Pour banana mixture into a blender and process until the mixture is smooth.
Mix coconut mixture and banana purée. Cover this and let it chilled in refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
Heat a pan to medium hot. Brush the pan surface with oil and spoon on the mixture. Fry it until it is light brown color.
Serve it hot, with the palm sugar caramel and passion fruit ice cream.

where can i buy a durian in new york city? I need an exact location and how much do they cost?
i need to find a durian in nyc or surrounding areas. also any recipes would be great. How will i know when its ripe and i heard that they smell bad , is there any easy way to contain the sent?
Answer: You can buy them in Chinatown or any Chinese or Vietnamese market. When they're not in season, you can buy them frozen, sold without the shell and in pieces. If you only need very little, I suggest you buy these frozen ones. Fresh ones will give you few pounds of flesh. It's also good for people who don't know how to open the shell. And frozen ones are all riped, so you can eat them right away.
There are tons of recipes. You can make bread with it, much like banana bread. You can make icecream... But most people just eat it alone. Here're some recipes:

The thing about durian is that if you like it, you'd like the smell. If you hate it, you hate the smell. It's what the Japanese called "Suki kirai" - you either love it or you hate it. I strangely fall in the middle ground. I don't hate it, but I don't love it. I do get annoyed by any smell that lingers in my fridge. What we do at home is that my mom would open it and quickly put them in air-tight containers before putting them in the fridge. The frozen ones also don't smell as strong.

How do you find out which Durian tastes the richest?
Can anyone tell me how you can find out which durian tastes the richest, sweetest and best without opening it? Using all the senses we have. Anyone help?
Answer: I am a former chef and worked in Asia and there is no way of telling it is not like a melon, and in Asia there are 8 variety's, 2 are not edible and are used for animal feed, The giant ones are mostly a custardy flavour, in Singapore I saw smaller reddy toned one and elongated ones, we used both the fresh meat and the paste, which is from fruit that has split in picking, and been cooked to concentrate the flavour, I still buy it here in Canada now, but tend t buy the frozen durian meat/flesh, it is the same as the whole fruit but you not paying for 5-7 pounds of shell and membrane.

How do you know when a Durian is ripe enough to eat?
I just bought a 7 lb Durian fruit from a Korean supermarket and have no idea how to tell if its ripe enough to eat. I dont see any "seam" or crack that some people say you can cut across to open it, and the color is more greenish-yellow, though more towards yellow.

Answer: Have tried it, the smell is nasty but the taste is delicious. It has a wonderful creamy texture almost like a vanilla pudding or custard. I would love it eat it again. If you can get past the smell, you will love it!

Where can you find a fruit named Durian?
I was told by someone to buy a fruit called durian to feed to my pet rat. Supposidly rats love this fruit. But I have never heard of it so I dont even know where to find it at.
Answer: I'm not sure what country your from but here in the states you can go to any Asian markets and ask them if they have any durian not many carries it since they have import them and depending on the season but be very very careful because if you don't know anything about durian then I should warn you, IT STINKS, it stinks so bad it smells like rotten cheese and I heard from people that eats it that smells like it taste but they are a few that says that it taste pretty good, I can not stand the smell of it I'm originally from the Philippines where it's very abundant but I could never get myself to try it but you can always buy them in a can to avoid that rotten smell and I'm pretty sure that most Asian stores carries it.

How can you tell if a durian is ripe or not?
I bought a frozen durian at the market a couple days ago, I never tried one so I cant tell when ones ripe or not. It looks like theres some mold growing on it though. Has that ever happened to anyone before? And should I still eat it?
Answer: That one is already ripe because it has molds. You can open it using a knife. When you will eat it, just cover your nose. You can also eat a durian candy. Its my favorite.

What are some ways to remove the scent of durian?
What are some effective ways to remove the bad odor of durian? (not on the hands but the durian itself). We are having an investigatory project about Durian Perfume so I need to at least lessen the bad odor of the durian but NOT replace it with some other smell. Thanks.
Answer: Some traditional "odor removers" are coffee grounds, white vinegar, and baking soda. You could try putting the durian in a container with each of these and see what happens.
Durian also comes from more than one species, and some have a more noxious smell than others. So a good start would be to get one of the varietys that doesn't smell as bad initially. Durian graveolens and Durian zibethinus (from Thailand) are supposed to be two of the least offensive.

I saw Durian on a television show the other night and became curious about it. Does anyone know where I can buy one in the USA? I doubt I will be able to find one in TX do you know of any place that can ship them to me?
Answer: You might have a hard time finding someone to ship them to you. Durian fruit have a very strong smell that most people find bad. In Southeast Asian, where the fruit originates, shipping companies require the fruit to be in special bays of ships, trucks or planes where the smell can be contained and can not contaminate other items. In ice cream shops, Durian ice cream is often kept in a separate freezer all its own for the same reason. The smell is strong and can permeated things.
If you go on-line, you might find someone willing to ship you one by mail. It will likely be frozen. Not as good as fresh but you will still get an idea of weather you like it. They are big so find enough friends who want to share an unusual food experience with you. You won't want to store leftovers in your fridge!
The flavor is much better than the smell, but still an acquired taste.
Do you have a china town in Texas somewhere? If you do, go to the produce stores and look. If you don't see one look in the freezers or ask them. There may be a language barrier but just say Durian fruit to them and see where it takes you. Thai restaurants might also have some access to order them for you. What is the best way to open a durian? And whats the best way to eat it once Ive opened it?
I found durian in a local Toronto market, but they dont slice them open at the market like they apparently do in Asia. The tough, spiny shell seems like it would be nearly impossible to get through without power tools. Any advice?
Also, Ive never had fresh durian before (only in a milkshake) and would love advice on how to eat it -- tips on eating it fresh, favorite recipes... and maybe also ways to get rid of the smell!
