What freedoms are we willing to give up next?
Government funded welfare programs are a trade off between freedom and security. Money is power and when we turn our money over to the government for programs such as unemployment (the benefits are paid by employers, but the program itself is taxpayer funded), Social Security, food stamps, and public schools we give up power and freedom to the government that would otherwise belong to us.
Unemployment recipients for example give up much of their freedom to decide when, where, and from whom they will accept a new position.
Food stamps and other handouts are expensive and low income workers who would prefer to save for such contingencies have a harder time doing so because so much of their money goes to taxes to pay for those programs.
Mandatory contributions to Social Security take away the workers right to decide how much of their retirement funds are invested.
Paying taxes for the public school system makes it difficult for low income parents to choose private schools.
My point here is that it is not the well to do who suffer the when we give our freedoms up for security in the form of welfare programs.
It is the working poor and the working classes that feel the effects the most. It is the people who do not have a lot of money who lose the freedom to choose to be self sufficient.

How is my premise "messed up"?
My premise is that there is a trade off that exists. As we turn to the government for security we give up our right to certain freedoms and that those freedoms then become privilages.
When we disallow the words "under God" to be spoken in the pledge of allegience at public schools or prevent politicians from holding voluntary bible study in their private offices we put restrictions on the freedom to free practice of religion and on the right to free speech. In the short term this fuels the fire for the prejudices of certain special interest groups and in the long term threatens those freedoms for everyone.
Answer: and all of these have been supported by your local liberal, taking your freedoms in exchange for a little cash, I expect the next thing is education, theyve one the battle halfway already.

We are so reliant on electricity..wondered what would happen if the national grid was to go down for say a couple of months..
We would lose access to a.t.m machines (thus have no money..) - not that money would be much good with supermarkets and the like reliant on bar codes, refrigeration, petrol pumps (when transporting goods etc).. communication would be restricted - no chargers for mobiles, pcs, tvs etc.. few of us could work - hospitals would be in chaos..unless they have generators..
LOL anyways - there are numerous scenarios but did wonder what would happen? Is there a contingency plan for such an event or could it never happen?

Can we as consumers unite against and challenge fuel producers.?
Sure we motorist represent a large contingency of fuel consumers which means that we should have the power to force big oil to lower fuel prices by targeting one supplier at a time. If we could unite and organize across the nation by choosing to boycott one producer that would instill a fear the oil companys have never known or felt. The internet is a force that has changed the world, and it just maybe the force to bring big oil back to reality.
Answer: well i grew up in a family of oil field workers my whole life and theres not one glamorous thing about it. Anyways there are two people to blame for the outrageous gas prices, the main culprit is not the oil companies, but its your state and local governments. Then its the oil companies. The governments lodge taxes and levies on petroleum products (mainly gasoline) beacuse its a guaranteed money maker for them, only for the politians to blow it all on worthless programs. Just look at how gas prices all over the US differ from each other. If you live here in California where they tax the living hell out of everything then you will naturally pay a higher cost for a lower quality gas because of all the "air cleansing" crap CA government has mandated to go into gas to make it "environmentally friendly" whereas if you live in a place like Wyoming where the tax base is relatively low then you'll pay a slightly lower difference. Gas picketing will not work for the simple fact that our economy must use fuel to keep the machines turning, planes flying, cop cruisers patrolling, fire trucks running, and so forth. You get the idea. Sooooo.... to counter the heavy taxes imposed by our "deeply concerned" government, the oil companies (mind you this is a CAPITALIST MARKET society we live in) raise prices to run drilling equipment to extract crude oil and run the refineries to make our fuels and other petroleum based products (NOT CHEAP AT ALL), then ultimately to earn profits. You think they make this stuff out of the goodness of thier hearts, please. I hate the fact that we import about 80% of our oil from the middle east simply because of how unstable the areas are. Also I am in no way, shape or form defending the oil companies but mind you that in our free market society people go in to buisiness to make money, thats the american way. Find a product people need and use all the time then capitalize on it. If you want to make a change then start with your elected officials. Use your constitutional rights to petetion ( thank a veteran for that). They are there for YOU, the people, remind them of it. The absolute only way to stick it to the man is to develope the means to mass produce green energy and green fuels, we already possess the goods we just need to work on mass production. Then in 20 years we'll be complaining about the high cost of corn.

Modifications for power-supply upgrade, Acer slimlines?
I am preparing a modest hardware-upgrade program for an eMachines®/Acer® EL1210-09, orig. equipped with an Advance Micro Devices® Athlon® LE-1620 CPU, 2 GB PC6400 main memory, and 160GB Hitachi® Deskstar® SATA hard disc drive. Most hardware known to be functional under Microsoft® Windows® 6.0.6002 (Vista Service Pack 2) should also work under Windows® 7.0.8002 (Se7en Service Pack 1); I plan on a 1 TB Western Digital® Caviar Green® as the replacement hard disc. Further contingency plans include an Advance Micro Devices® Athlon X2 5050e, new RAM to the capacity of 4 GB, and an Auzentech® X-Fi® Forte 7.1 (Creative® CA20K2 chipset) PCI-Express audio card to supersede the planar Realtek® ALC-889 audio chip.
The only hamstring here is the stock power supply. The LiteOn® PS-5221-06, an FTX-type power converter also used in the Acer® Aspire and Gateway® SX-series, is limited to 220W continuous; and Id rather have 250-300W continuous for the sake of power stability. What power supplies out there can fit the Acer slimline case; provide power for 20+4-pin ATX mobo, +12VDC 4-pin (for the PSU voltage regulator), dual 15-pin SATA power (WD® hard disc plus LG® Labelflash optical drive), and mini 4-pin (front-panel datacard reader/writer): And how should the stock case be modified to accept the proposed upgrade PSU? Answer: You and everyone else in the world who buys a slimline computer would love to upgrade...but those slimline computers are not made to be upgradeable. They have no expansion room in them. The fact is that a bigger power supply requires bigger capacitors, armatures and other components which will not fit into those dinky little 220 watt boxes. If you increase the wattage capacity of the power supply, larger components are required.
So the answer is, MAYBE you could get away with buying a small desktop tower case and moving the components you want into a small tower instead - either that or forget about upgrading!

Do you acknowledge that anything is possible?
Do you acknowledge this? I have been to college, and I learned from a professor of mine that anything is possible, although not everything is probable. This professor of course has a Ph.D. If you have ever taken a college statistics course yourself, then you also know that its true that anything is possible. Although some things arent likely, nothing is impossible. Agreed?
Would you change your answer if I brought the possibility of God into the equation? Why would you suddenly hit the brakes at this prospect, when you were previously willing to admit that anything is indeed possible? Is the only reason that an atheist may deny that anything is possible because of the contingency of the existence of God?
So why is it that some atheists deny that anything is possible? Is it only because of opening up the door to the possibility of a higher power? If you believe that there are impossibilities, how can you logically justify your assertion? If you do refuse to accept the fact that anything is possible, why do you choose to deny it? Do you predicate your refusal on an intelligent premise, or is it only because you dont want to acknowledge that God may exist? Is that kind of objection a logical one, or is it based on emotion?

Answer: No. It is not true that anything is possible.
You mention probability, and there is a level of probability so small as to be practically impossible. For example, the probability of monkeys typing at random is so small that it is practically impossible that they could produce a single couplet from Shakespeare.
Even if the observable universe were filled with monkeys typing from now until the heat death of the universe, their total probability to produce a single instance of Hamlet would still be less than one in 10^183,800. As Kittel and Kroemer put it, "The probability of Hamlet is therefore zero in any operational sense of an event…", and the statement that the monkeys must eventually succeed "gives a misleading conclusion about very, very large numbers." This is from their textbook on thermodynamics, the field whose statistical foundations motivated the first known expositions of typing monkeys.

Would any country ever be prepared for a nuclear attack?
After seeing the docu-film Threads, I suspect that, with the power of todays nuclear armaments, anywhere that is bombed would never be able to handle the situation.
This begs the question - would any contingency plan actually work? Modern houses are built generally from lighter material construction than of those built in the early twentieth-century (and older) so surely making your own shelter (as per the pamphlets issued in the UK in the 60s/70s) would be impossible.

Answer: during the Cold War many houses in Switzerland were built with Nuclear Fall out shelters, for all the good they would do.
Modern houses are less sturdy than their predecessors and would probably fall to pieces during the initial blast, and catch fire during the heat flash as there are more combustable materials used (plasterboard for example) in construction. Don't worry about fire retardation, because at the high temperatures generated by the explosion it's not going to be alot of cop.
I would question whether a cold war bunker could handle the increased power of todays advanced Nuclear munitions. some protection is better than none of course, but then again after the event society and the Planet would be useless and surviving perhaps worse than death itself.
