Does it make sense to get a JD if you plan a career in ibanking/M&A?
if you want to handle the legal aspects of ibanking/M&A in order to eventually move on to full-time work in M&A?
Answer: i can tell you i worked with a guy who had a jd and he worked as a nyse series 16 sa analyst. ... to do that job he only needed the series 16 license but the jd made him even more desirable during the time they were trying to fill the position. ....needless to say, he got the job in a heartbeat not only because his credentials fit the job to a "t" but because of his great persona and glowing references. it turned out he was a smart fast worker, super nice and never induldged in insipid office crap

What are my career options like in the Washington DC area after getting a fulltime MBA from Columbia or Stern?
I am planning on attending after two years of work experience in IT consulting at a well known firm. I graduated from a top 20 US university and majored in finance. I am interested in finance but want to work reasonable hours (no ibanking), do not want to travel, and want to find a job around DC after my MBA.
Any advice/suggestions for additional resources?
Answer: Look at the employment reports from Columbia Business School and Stern. They're usually available as PDF files and show where graduates are employed, how much they're making, who they're working for, and all of that jazz. You can find lots of useful statistics. I have the one for Columbia's MBA program on my hard drive so I know it exists. The Stern MBA report, I'm not so sure but you can try finding it on a search engine.

Does tax work bring any value to my resume for obtaining an investment banking internship?
I am currently working in taxes, doing corporate and individual tax returns.
Does my current job add any value to my resume when I apply for an investment banking internship?
If not, what can I do to enhance my resume, in hope of landing an ibanking internship?
Answer: Not to offend, but don't listen to the first answer. It may help you if you're volunteering at a hospital, but for an I-banking job will throw you under the bus. I find it's best to be honest when it comes to the cut-through world of being an I-banker, so without further delay...
Fact is, you can't hope to "impress" in person because about 92% of applicants don't get an interview (sounds high, but is accurate). Also, if it is just "simple" such as "familiarization with tax code", it will be discarded. You need to impress enough on paper for them to want to meet you. And remember, almost everyone applying for the job has relevant experience, so be as unique yet relevant as possible. Sell them right away on what you have that they might be missing or need.
Yes, the tax work could help. The knowledge must have come from somewhere (likely accounting work or financial analysis)--that of which is one of your selling points. A big ticket item in banking is your accounting strength more so than anything. (well that and a type A personality that oozes with confidence)
The other answer is right though--leave it to 1 page. Anymore and it won't be looked at. Feel free to email it over. I've helped a number of friends prepare resumes for their I-banking interviews, and I wouldn't mind taking a minute. And they were hired (Morgan Stanley, UBS, and JP Morgan).

How Not To Start A Relationship
In the last month I’ve had the chance to make about 50 new friends. I’ve suddenly become very popular with investment bankers and have been on the receiving end of over 50 emails that look something like the following:
what is iBanking? and what do you do in a job like that?
how much do you make?
Answer: You start as an analyst if you have a BS or BA. The work load is intense. You will have 100+ hr weeks. Expect 70-80 hours on average. Much of the work is financial analysis using Excel. There are also trips to clients to present your work, advising them on mergers and acquisitions (your boss will do most of the talking). It is usually a 2-yr job that typically goes to business and econ majors at top colleges. Base salary is around $60K to start, plus a bonus of around $30K. If you are promoted to associate, you will earn a base of six figures with the potential for very high bonuses.

Career change from Finance to IBanking, teaching, or something else?
I graduated with a Finance degree in 2006 and since then I have been a Financial Analyst for a big company in the Entertainment industry (in which the salary isnt very high). I was thinking about a career change. I am more a people person and i dont really like being locked up in a cubical all day. I cant afford a pay cut in my career change and im not sure if i should just go for my MBA. I really enjoy teaching, but i know that they dont make much money and i dont want to go back to school unless its for getting into Grad school. Can i become a community college teacher now? If so, how? What are some other decent salary (>than 50k) careers i can pursue? IBanking would be nice but i dont know how i would be able to get into that.
Confused :/
Answer: Given your finance degree and the experience you've already gained, you're in good shape to be successful in multiple areas.
First, you're right about teaching. It can be an incredibly rewarding job emotionally and intellectually, but the pay is not great in comparison with the financial field. You could have a tough time getting a position that immediately pays you more than 50k, especially without an advanced degree. As you probably know, if you're interested in teaching at the college level, you should aim to get at least a masters degree, if not a doctorate. Over the long term, this will give you a lot more opportunity for advancement, for a higher salary, and for getting published and being taken seriously by your peers and superiors.
If you're considering teaching below the college level, you may not need to get additional education...and you could get started sooner. Here are two links with some useful info about the teaching profession:
http://www.pbs.org/firstyear/beaTeacher/
http://www.ed.gov/teachers/become/progra...
But it may not yet be time to forget about finance, especially if you enjoy some aspects of the work. If your primary complaint is that you want more interaction with other people and less time alone, then you may want to look at another career within the financial services world, such as consulting, trading, or a whole host of other options. I-banking is certainly very well paid, and at the higher levels there is quite a bit of human interaction...but at the more junior levels you will still have quite a bit of number crunching to do in your office.

Whats the difference between Real Estate ibanking and Real Estate Private Equity?
Answer: July 26th, 2008
Realestate Ibanking and or Investment Banking is where Investment banks help companies and governments raise money by issuing and selling securities in the capital markets (both equity and debt), as well as providing advice on transactions such as mergers and acquisitions.
Real Estate Private Equity is where you have private hedge funds and or angel investors that would like to invest in the real estate and or business. These are normally used as a secondary source of funds due to the higher percentages of interest and/or of the total profit.
If I can help you any further let me know.

How important is analytic ability when going for a career in ibanking?
If a student has all the necessary financial knowledge but poor mathematical skills can he land a ibanking job? How mathematics-intensive is ibanking work? Can a person with poor math skills but knowledge of financial calculations get by doing financial modeling and other ibanking work?
Answer: I am not an Internet Banking expert but my guess is that poor analytical skills and the inability to complete basic mathmatical calculations probably are a disadvantage. In general, people who aren't too bright probably don't succeed as easily as those who are smarter. (I arrived at that conclusion by using my analytical skills.)
